Seagoing Ships and Seamanship in the Bronze Age Levant

This thesis examines the relationship between water and religious life in the Roman Near East. It analyses the ways in which religious communities engaged with water in the characterisation of gods, the organisation of sacred spaces and the development of patterns of worship. These three themes – gods, spaces and patterns of worship – constitute the core chapters of this thesis. This study demonstrates that the religious communities of the Roman Near East engaged critically with water in the development of their traditions and practices, and that the nature of this engagement was directly influenced by local environmental conditions. Previous scholarship has consistently marginalised the importance of water in religious life across the Roman Near East. This disregard began with the classification of water as a primitive layer of religion and continued with either indifference to the nuances of the local environment or unquestioning acceptance of water’s presence in the religious sphere. As a result, by neglecting to explore the nuances with which the relationship between water and religious life manifested, we have overlooked the many ways in which the religious communities of the Roman Near East interacted with the varied bodies of water that formed their local environment. To address this marginalisation, this study elevates water and its particular environmental dimensions to the forefront of discussion. It achieves this by utilising environmental data in order to determine the local nuances of the region’s diverse landscapes, as well as drawing on a range of material – including literature, religious architecture, inscriptions, sculpture and mosaics, and coinage – from which we might seek to understand religious life in the Roman Near East. This study concludes that the relationship between water and religious life in the Roman Near East emerges as one that is fundamentally grounded in local variety.

Abstract This study aims at reconstructing the evolution of the character of the Anatolian storm-god in Phrygia from the Hittite period to the Roman imperial era, particularly taking into account the Greek votive dedications to Zeus Brontôn. According to the Hittite and Luwian texts, the power of the storm-god was not only limited to the sky, but encompassed fertility, the order of the seasons and, because of his role as the protector of kingship, the social order. Because they favourited a female deity generically called Matar, the coming of the Phrygians seems to be linked to the degradation of the cult, which remained practiced by the lower strata of the population and in the countryside. It was only after the arrival of the Greeks in Hellenistic times and the identification of the local ancient storm-gods with Zeus that their worship became tangible and visible again. The impressive number of dedications, mostly dated between the second and third centuries CE, constitutes an excellent documentary base for studying the character of these local deities. In these epigraphic texts, the theonym Zeus was used as a generic name (Gesamtsbezeichnung) for several divine beings, only partially comparable to the Greek Olympian Zeus.

This article seeks to demonstrate that Phoenician vessels were considered to be more than just planks of timber fashioned together to form a platform on which mariners could conduct their daily lives whilst at sea; it will show, rather, that they were thought of as self-contained entities that were imbued with a living spirit that needed the protection of a number of maritime deities. By emphasizing the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic aspects of Canaanite and Phoenician vessels, it is possible to challenge previous suggestions that the horns mounted on a vessel’s prow were either part of its superstructure or simply a decorative device, and instead establish their specific religious significance.
