Psychoanalytic Techniques: A Handbook for the Practicing Psychoanalyst,edited by Benjamin B. Wolman, 596 pp, $15, New York and London: Basic Books, Inc., 1967. Psychotherapeutic techniques depend on the way the therapist understands the personality of each patient and what changes both patient and therapist strive for. The personality makeup of man may be simple in its broad essentials but is certainly complex in its details, and full of surprises. Freud opened up our understanding of it—he did not close it. Certainly no single school has all the answers, although this is the tone of much orthodox psychoanalytic writing as distinct from contributions that are free inquiries using all available knowledge. Dr. Greenson's book is based primarily on the theory of dammed-up libido, correct in itself but not expanded and enriched by the last 40 years of study which have seen such revolutionary progress in every other clinical and scientific

This paper proposes a relationship between family problems and the issues of an analytical training group from the point of view of systems theory and analytical psychology. It also explores some ethical problems that are common to families and to training groups.

The practice of psychotherapy

This paper examines the influence of familiarity on the progress of analysis It is proposed that familiarity is a particular aspect of the intersubjective field which emerges over time and begins to shape and influence the behaviours, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings of the participants It is also proposed that states of familiarity can have facilitative or defensive functions in an analytic relationship and that it is an influence co-created in the field The experience of familiarity operates as background to our various foreground concerns in analytic work and therefore exists primarily as an implicit, rather than explicit, experience in analysis Defensive familiarity often creates a feeling of relatedness that is subtly unrelated, a form of pseudo-intimacy Parallels between defensive familiarity and related concepts are examined including defences against the unknown, role responsiveness, romantic love, the image of the stranger, and unformulated experience This paper concludes with two case examples and a discussion of procedural knowledge in the implicit domain as an explanatory framework for the understanding of familiarity states in the analytic setting

The Concept of Analytic Contact: The Kleinian Approach to Reaching the Hard to Reach Patient by Waska, Robert

This article engages the concept and experience of otherness, or the “stranger within,” through the artwork of Francis Bacon. Bacon’s artwork is explored utilizing Jung’s concept of the shadow; Bion’s interrelated concepts of β-element, α-element, α-function, containment, and reverie; and Burke’s concept of the sublime. The encounter with otherness, so essential to the analytical process, as well our engagement with the world around us, is also central to Bacon’s art. Bacon’s work both confronts and reveals. Through distortions of figure, expression, and space Bacon meditates on the abject, distorted, disfigured, and painful aspects of experience.
