The present experiments compared rats’ responses to a moving object (a rolling ball bearing) related to either food or water under both Pavlovian and operant contingencies. In Experiment 1, food-restricted rats contacted food-related bearings more frequently and with more complex response patterns than water-restricted rats contacted water-related bearings. Food-related contacts occurred with shorter latency, longer average duration, and increased likelihood of dig, carry, and chew. Experiment 2 revealed that once contact with the bearing had been established, its form persisted despite changes in the type of reward and restriction. In Experiment 3, rats that were simultaneously food and water restricted learned to discriminate between painted and unpainted bearings related to food versus no food, water versus no water, and food versus water. Again, food-related bearings produced more complex, although not more frequent, interactions than did water-related bearings. In none of the experiments did rats lick the ball bearing related to water. The results supported a behavior-system approach, but not the stimulus-substitution or arbitrary-operant accounts of conditioned-response topography.

In Experiment 1, the form of keypecks produced in an autoshaping procedure with food or water reinforcers was compared with that of eating and drinking responses. Because the responses involve a number of different effector systems, several elements of response form were measured, including peck force and duration, gape, and eye closure. Gape was the only measure to reliably distinguish between both ingestive responses and between conditioned keypecks reinforced with food or water. With either reinforcer, keypecks had greater force than did ingestive behaviors. In Experiment 2, a transition between two forms of keypeck was produced by manipulating deprivation and reinforcer conditions. Some measures appeared to vary in a dichotomous manner between two discrete response forms; gape showed a gradual and continuous change involving the production of intermediate forms of the response. It was concluded that the control of conditioned response form involves theconstruction of the response from movements produced by several effector systems, each with potentially different sources of control.

Birds use their beaks as visually guided prehensile (reaching/grasping) effectors, employing the beak for functions critical to survival. The beak is used to pick up and ingest food, preen the feathers, gather nesting material and assemble the nest. In many altricial species, beak-mediated prehension is involved in the delivery of food to the young, either by grasping the beaks of the young and delivering food regurgitatively, or by using the beak to seize food and carry it back to the nest. In aggressive interactions the beak is used to grasp forcefully and to twist the skin and feathers of the opponent. The beak is also involved in critical non-prehensile tasks; notably, song production, drinking, and aggressive jabbing. As well as showing variation in beak use across functions, some species must show flexibility in their beak movements within a task, such as feeding.

When four experimentally naive pigeons were exposed to occasional forward pairings of a keylight followed by a doorlight (that signaled access to a large social space), all subjects began to peck the lit key. In a second experiment, where the keylight either preceded the presentation of the doorlight or was presented independently of it, key pecking was maintained only in the former circumstance. The unconditioned stimulus in these experiments--arrival in the social space--did not elicit pecking. Hence, the conditioned response of key pecking and the unconditioned response of entering the social space differed. This demonstration of autoshaping with a social-space unconditioned stimulus argues against a stimulus-substitution account of the findings.

Food pecking in the ring dove is a skilled prehensile response that is similar to, but simpler than, many other prehensile responses. Previous work has shown that this response is initially poorly executed and requires experience for its accurate direction and coordination. The response involves two components: the thrusting of the bird's head toward food, and the opening and closure of the beak around food. Here, this second component, called gape, is followed through development with a precise measurement system. Four squabs moved through a similar sequence of three gape topographies, each of which is more efficient in picking up seed, during development. The present outcome, together with other work, argues for a substantial contribution of experience with pecking to the development of food pecking. We discuss the implications of these findings for understanding the ontogeny of motor control and for understanding how experience affects behavioral development.

The autoshaped responses of two debeaked pigeons that had developed modified eating behavior were compared to the autoshaped responses of three control subjects that ate grain normally. The control subjects exhibited keylight responding that was judged normal by two independent raters. The debeaked subjects pecked the key and ate grain with both normal and modified responses. The results of this study demostrate that an autoshaping procedure using grain as an appetitive stimulus may be used to establish a response that is not biologically preorganized.
