The invention allows the user to store selected television broadcast programs while the user is simultaneously watching or reviewing another program. A preferred embodiment of the invention accepts television (TV) input streams in a multitude of analog and digital forms. The TV streams are converted to (MPEG) formatted stream for internal transfer and manipulation and are parsed and separated it into video and audio components. The components are stored in temporary buffers. Events are recorded that indicate the type of component that has been found, where it is located, and when it occurred. The program logic is notified that an event has occurred and the data is extracted from the buffers. The parser and event buffer decouple the CPU from having to parse the MPEG stream and from the real time nature of the data streams which allows for slower CPU and bus speeds and translate to lower system costs. The video and audio components are stored on a storage device and when the program is requested for display, the video and audio components are extracted from the storage device and reassembled into an MPEG stream which is sent to a decoder. The decoder converts the MPEG stream into TV output signals and delivers the TV output signals to a TV receiver. User control commands are accepted and sent through the system. These commands affect the flow of said MPEG stream and allow the user to view stored programs with at least the following functions: reverse, fast forward, play, pause, index, fast/slow reverse play, and fast/slow play.

The aggregator, operating in a communications network, includes a request and results processing server, a search engine server coupled to the request and results processing server and a content acquisition server coupled to the request and results processing server. A request and results processing server receives a request for content, the search engine server searches for the content and the content acquisition program acquires content for delivery to the user. The request and results processing server includes a search request processor that receives information related to a user's search request and provides the information to a search results form builder that creates an electronic search request.

A method and an apparatus are used to target interactive virtual objects to subscribers in a television delivery system. Programs are selected and virtual object locations are defined in the selected programs. The virtual objects (1265) available for targeting categorized and categories are correlated to subscriber information (1210) to determine the optimum targeting of the virtual objects (1260). The virtual objects may be targeted (1220) based on individual subscriber information (1210) or on information related to a group of subscribers. When a frame of program includes a virtual object location, a default or an alternate virtual objects is displayed. The virtual object location may change over space or time. The virtual object may be interactive, and may be used to link a subscriber to a remote location, such as an Internet web site. The television terminals record which virtual objects were displayed and report this information back to the headends and the operations center. The reported information is used to generate billing for commercial advertisers and to analyze viewer watching habits.

Method and apparatus for targeting of interactive virtual objects

A program guide in which a video layer includes a plurality of video objects including title objects, each title object having associated with it a channel and at least one time slot, the video layer being formed in response to a received video stream; and a graphics layer comprising a plurality of graphics objects including title overlay objects, each of the title overlay objects selectively imparting at least a visual de-emphasis to a respective title object in the video layer, the visual de-emphasis being imparted to title objects not being associated with a desired time slot.

Data structure and methods for providing an interactive program guide

Digitally compressed video/audio bit streams, when transmitted over digital communication channels such as digital subscriber loop (DSL) access networks, ATM networks, satellite, or wireless digital transmission facilities, can be corrupted due to lack of sufficient channel bandwidth. This invention describes schemes to ensure lossless transmission of bit streams containing pre-compressed video signals within the communication channels. The schemes herein comprises a rate conversion system that converts the bit rate of a pre-compressed video bit stream from one bit rate to another, and that is integrated with a digital communication channel, and a means to convey the maximum channel transmission rate to the rate conversion system to allow satisfactory transmission of the bit stream from the input of the rate converter through the transmission facility.

System and method for transporting a compressed video and data bit stream over a communication channel

A method and apparatus for recording and playback of transport stream packets including multiplexed audio, video and other data streams. The transport streams may be generated in accordance with an MPEG-2 standard. In a record mode, an arrival timestamp is generated for each input transport packet to be recorded in a peripheral storage device. A given arrival timestamp indicates the arrival time of the corresponding transport packet in the recording system. Each of the transport packets are then stored with their corresponding arrival timestamps. The record mode may utilize a packet identifier (PID) decoder to perform packet filtering such that only incoming transport packets with selected PIDs are stored. In a playback mode, transport packets and corresponding arrival timestamps are retrieved from the storage device and the arrival timestamps are utilized to direct synchronous delivery of the transport packets to, for example, a decoder or a transport stream broadcast system. The playback mode may detect a timestamp discontinuity code in one or more of the arrival timestamps, and adjust the playback system time clock accordingly. The playback mode may also provide null packet interleaving in which a selectable number of null packets are inserted between each valid transport packet to thereby provide a selectable fixed-rate transport packet output. The recording and playback features may be implemented using a spooler card and a storage controller card incorporated into an otherwise conventional personal computer.

Recording and playback of audio-video transport streams

A remultiplexer is disclosed for communicating plural programs. Each program comprises one or more elementary streams that are encoded in relation to a single common time base corresponding to the respective program. The communicated programs originate from plural input transport streams that each comprises plural transport packets. Each transport packet contains a packet identifier indicating the data contained therein. Within each transport stream, unique packet identifiers are assigned to each elementary stream of each program. The data of each elementary stream is only contained in transport packets having a corresponding packet identifier. Each input transport stream contains time stamps for reconstructing the single program time base corresponding to each program conveyed therein. The remultiplexer has a data link module which receives the plural input transport streams. The data link module also selectively extracts transport packets from the received input transport streams. The remultiplexer has a downstream bus on which the data link module sequentially transfers at least some of the extracted transport packets. The remultiplexer selects which of the extracted transport packets to transfer on the downstream message bus depending on the packet identifiers of the transport packets. The remultiplexer also has a scheduler which assembles the transport packets transferred on the downstream bus into a single output transport stream.
