A system and method for communicating information between a first party and a second party, comprising the steps of receiving, by an intermediary, an identifier of desired information and accounting information for a transaction involving the information from the first party, transmitting an identifier of the first party to the second party, and negotiating, by the intermediary, a comprehension function for obscuring at least a portion of the information communicated between the first party and the second party. The data transmission may be made secure with respect to the intermediary by providing an asymmetric key or direct key exchange for encryption of the communication between the first and second party. The data transmission may be made secure with respect to the second party by maintaining the information in encrypted format at the second party, with the decryption key held only by the intermediary, and transmitting a secure composite of the decryption key and a new encryption key to the second party for transcoding of the data record, and providing the new decryption key to the first party, so that the information transmitted to the first party can be comprehended by it.

In this paper, the fundamental insecurities hampering a scalable, wide-spread deployment of biometric authentication are examined, and a cryptosystem capable of using fingerprint data as its key is presented. For our application, we focus on situations where a private key stored on a smartcard is used for authentication in a networked environment, and we assume an attacker can launch o -line attacks against a stolen card.Juels and Sudan's fuzzy vault is used as a starting point for building and analyzing a secure authentication scheme using fingerprints and smartcards called a figerprint vault. Fingerprint minutiae coordinates mi are encoded as elements in a nite eld F and the secret key is encoded in a polynomial f(x) over F[x]. The polynomial is evaluated at the minutiae locations, and the pairs (mi, f(mi)) are stored along with random (ci, di) cha points such that di ≠ f(ci). Given a matching fingerprint, a valid user can seperate out enough true points from the cha points to reconstruct f(x), and hence the original secret key.The parameters of the vault are selected such that the attacker's vault unlocking complexity is maximized, subject to zero unlocking complexity with a matching fingerprint and a reasonable amount of error. For a feature location measurement variance of 9 pixels, the optimal vault is 269 times more difficult to unlock for an attacker compared to a user posessing a matching fingerprint, along with approximately a 30% chance of unlocking failure.

A distributed network of vehicles such as a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) can easily turn into an infrastructure-less self-organizing traffic information system, where any vehicle can participate in collecting and reporting useful traffic information such as section travel time, flow rate, and density. Disseminating traffic information relies on broadcasting protocols. Recently, there have been a significant number of broadcasting protocols for VANETs reported in the literature. In this paper, we classify and provide an in-depth review of these protocols.

Authentication for applications in computer network environments using intelligent tokens

The range of devices that are capable of connecting to data networks has been on a rise in recent times. From the perspective of an administrator, controlling access to data networks, via these devices, usually includes the creation of separate login credentials. This leads to an administrative nightmare, from both the user and administrator’s point of view. This paper proposes a novel approach to this problem and offers a single-sign-on system, where the user’s authorisation is based on the login credentials of the user, and the profile of the device the user is using. An instance of this design is presented with SESAME, to demonstrate the usefulness of the design, and also practicality for implementation.

Ubiquitous Authorization Scheme Based On Device Profile

The increasing use of general-purpose computer systems for critical infrastructure control, rather than the traditional dedicated system, raises significant security concerns. These concerns are further compounded by the integration of these control systems with generalpurpose networks and the use of wireless technologies within these networks. Consequently, control systems are becoming increasingly vulnerable to a large range of attacks which may result in significant environmental and financial consequences such as a recent attack on a sewage treatment plant in Queensland. Current systems rely on singular border protection mechanisms like firewalls. Although such an approach is effective in the majority of cases, if breached, currently available commercial operating systems provide little additional protection. Clearly, this is inadequate for critical infrastructures control systems. This paper proposes a secure context-based architecture to remedy this deficiency. It is based on the use of self-defending objects and location based authentication and authorisation. A hypothetical chemical plant scenario is used to illustrate the use of the proposed mechanism. The proposed architecture is expected to help negate the security vulnerabilities introduced through the use of general-purpose computer systems and wireless technology to control critical infrastructure.

Architecture for securing critical infrastructures using context-aware self-defending objects

Systems whose failure can lead to the damage of property or the environment, or loss of human life are regarded as safety-critical systems. It is no longer adequate to build safety-critical systems based on the control of errors and failures alone. Safety-critical systems must also deal with securing the data that is used in their operation. While safety and security engineering have evolved separately, there are a number of similarities. These similarities and efforts to integrate safety and security are identified. A project looking at securing safety-critical communications for the Australian rail network is also discussed.

Security as a Safety Issue in Rail Communications

Cooperative collision warning system for road vehicles, enabled by recent advances in positioning systems and wireless communication technologies, can potentially reduce traffic accident significantly. To improve the system, we propose a graph model to represent interactions between multiple road vehicles in a specific region and at a specific time. Given a list of vehicles in vicinity, we can generate the interaction graph using several rules that consider vehicle's properties such as position, speed, heading, etc. Safety applications can use the model to improve emergency warning accuracy and optimize wireless channel usage. The model allows us to develop some congestion control strategies for an efficient multi-hop broadcast protocol.
