A peripheral platform, such as an Intelligent Peripheral (IP), is a network subsystem for use in the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN). The IP will assume some functions presently performed by the Integrated Service Control Point (ISCP) and central office switches. In an integrated network offering interactive broadband services as well as voice telephone services, the IP also performs gateway and/or server functions for broadband communications. Among its functional capabilities will be voice announcement and digit collection. The IP also offers speech recognition capabilities and an array of other enhanced telephone call processing features, such as voice or facsimile messaging. The peripheral platform or IP will be a separate network component that will communicate with the ISCP, which controls the AIN, through a data communication network that in the preferred embodiments is distinct from the telephone company switching offices, trunk networks and any associated interoffice signalling network. Gateway functionalities performed by the IP include communications port management of transmissions of information between subscribers and broadband servers, processing of billing information and session management.

A method and apparatus for obtaining real-time, call by call, feedback from customers as to their perceived quality of network services may be accomplished after a communication, via a network connection between a calling party and at least one called party, is completed. Upon completion, the network retains, for a predetermined period of time, at least a portion of the network connection to one of the parties involved in the communication. During this predetermined period of time, the party provides feedback in the form of a sequence of numbers entered which identify his or her perception of the quality of various aspects of the call. If the feedback is received within the predetermined period of time, the network compiles the data which can then be used to interpret the opinion of many individuals as to network service quality, information as to catastrophic failures as well as mild failures, overall service, the perceived quality of new services and features, and quality of inter-networking. In addition, the compiled data may be used for future infrastructure planning, user behaviour profiles, and inter exchange carrier quality.

Method and apparatus for obtaining feedback regarding network services

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for accessing customer meters and for controlling customer devices over a telephone line. A connection using only a single distinctive brief burst of power ringing or tone is established over a customer line between a central office and customer station equipment to alert both the customer and the customer premises equipment (CPE) or a short burst of tone to alert the CPE. The connection is between a data accessing device such as a meter reading controller and a customer premises device such as a meter interface unit. Signals are exchanged over the connection between these two units without alerting the customer via a ringing signal and without changing the supervisory state of the customer's station equipment from on-hook. The connection can also be used for controlling devices such as air conditioning units, in order, for example, to avoid overloads in a power distribution system. The voice switching network of the central office is used for making the connection between the meter control unit and the meter interface unit. Advantageously, this arrangement can allow a large number of utility meters and controlling devices to be ascessed remotely using existing telephone plant. The short distinctive burst of power ringing or tone alert may be used to alert the customer premises equipment (CPE), the customer telephone, or both.

Telemetry access arrangement

A remote meter reading system has equipment at a telephone company office coupled by modems to a utility company computer which issues requests for customer data. Telephone test trunks are used to access individual meter sites and initiate meter readings using a number of single frequency bursts. Meter sending units emit a pulse for each unit of consumption and a microprocessor counts the pulses in RAM to derive separate meter readings. When interrogated, the microprocessor outputs the readings in a binary coded decimal format to a DTMF tone generator which emits each decimal number as a tone pair which is transmitted via the telephone line and is detected at the telephone company, translated into ASCII code and transmitted by modem to the utility computer.
