Disposable sensors are low-cost and easy-to-use sensing devices intended for short-term or rapid single-point measurements. The growing demand for fast, accessible, and reliable information in a vastly connected world makes disposable sensors increasingly important. The areas of application for such devices are numerous, ranging from pharmaceutical, agricultural, environmental, forensic, and food sciences to wearables and clinical diagnostics, especially in resource-limited settings. The capabilities of disposable sensors can extend beyond measuring traditional physical quantities (for example, temperature or pressure); they can provide critical chemical and biological information (chemo- and biosensors) that can be digitized and made available to users and centralized/decentralized facilities for data storage, remotely. These features could pave the way for new classes of low-cost systems for health, food, and environmental monitoring that can democratize sensing across the globe. Here, a brief insight into the materials and basics of sensors (methods of transduction, molecular recognition, and amplification) is provided followed by a comprehensive and critical overview of the disposable sensors currently used for medical diagnostics, food, and environmental analysis. Finally, views on how the field of disposable sensing devices will continue its evolution are discussed, including the future trends, challenges, and opportunities.

Wearable sensors have received considerable interest over the past decade owing to their tremendous promise for monitoring the wearers’ health, fitness, and their surroundings. However, only limited attention has been directed at developing wearable chemical sensors that offer more comprehensive information about a wearer’s well-being. The development of wearable chemical sensors faces multiple challenges on various fronts. This perspective reviews key challenges and technological gaps impeding the successful realization of effective wearable chemical sensor systems, related to materials, power, analytical procedure, communication, data acquisition, processing, and security. Size, rigidity, and operational requirements of present chemical sensors are incompatible with wearable technology. Wearable Chemical Sensors: Present Challenges and Future Prospects

The miniaturization, sophistication, proliferation, and accessibility of technologies are enabling the capture of more and previously inaccessible phenomena in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, more information has not translated into a greater understanding of disease complexity to satisfy diagnostic and therapeutic needs. Challenges include noncompatible technology platforms, the need for wide-scale and long-term deployment of sensor technology (among vulnerable elderly patients in particular), and the gap between the "big data" acquired with sensitive measurement technologies and their limited clinical application. Major opportunities could be realized if new technologies are developed as part of open-source and/or open-hardware platforms that enable multichannel data capture sensitive to the broad range of motor and nonmotor problems that characterize PD and are adaptable into self-adjusting, individualized treatment delivery systems. The International Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society Task Force on Technology is entrusted to convene engineers, clinicians, researchers, and patients to promote the development of integrated measurement and closed-loop therapeutic systems with high patient adherence that also serve to (1) encourage the adoption of clinico-pathophysiologic phenotyping and early detection of critical disease milestones, (2) enhance the tailoring of symptomatic therapy, (3) improve subgroup targeting of patients for future testing of disease-modifying treatments, and (4) identify objective biomarkers to improve the longitudinal tracking of impairments in clinical care and research. This article summarizes the work carried out by the task force toward identifying challenges and opportunities in the development of technologies with potential for improving the clinical management and the quality of life of individuals with PD. © 2016 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Technology in Parkinson's disease: Challenges and opportunities.

The development of wearable biosensors for continuous noninvasive monitoring of target biomarkers is limited to assays of a single sampled biofluid. An example of simultaneous noninvasive sampling and analysis of two different biofluids using a single wearable epidermal platform is demonstrated here. The concept is successfully realized through sweat stimulation (via transdermal pilocarpine delivery) at an anode, alongside extraction of interstitial fluid (ISF) at a cathode. The system thus allows on-demand, controlled sampling of the two epidermal biofluids at the same time, at two physically separate locations (on the same flexible platform) containing different electrochemical biosensors for monitoring the corresponding biomarkers. Such a dual biofluid sampling and analysis concept is implemented using a cost-effective screen-printing technique with body-compliant temporary tattoo materials and conformal wireless readout circuits to enable real-time measurement of biomarkers in the sampled epidermal biofluids. The performance of the developed wearable device is demonstrated by measuring sweat-alcohol and ISF-glucose in human subjects consuming food and alcoholic drinks. The different compositions of sweat and ISF with good correlations of their chemical constituents to their blood levels make the developed platform extremely attractive for enhancing the power and scope of next-generation noninvasive epidermal biosensing systems.

Simultaneous Monitoring of Sweat and Interstitial Fluid Using a Single Wearable Biosensor Platform.

The field of printed wearable electronics has witnessed spectacular growth due to its promise to offer low-cost, high-performance devices for a broad range of applications. Among the sub-fields of printed wearable electronics, printed wearable electrochemical systems are of special importance due to their widespread applications in healthcare, energy and security fields. These systems have opened up new avenues for body-integrated electronics that were earlier impossible to achieve. These include wearable energy systems and sensors for a wide variety of applications. Much of the success of printed wearable electrochemical systems can be attributed to innovations in materials engineering that have led to novel inks comprising of new nanomaterials, polymers and composites. New generation of printed electrochemical devices include soft, stretchable and anatomically-compliant devices that enable efficient bio-integration and withstand high tensile stress associated with on-body applications. Progress in materials science has also led to the development of self-healing printed electrochemical systems for wearable applications. This review provides an overview of the key material requirements for ink formulations for realizing efficient wearable electrochemical systems such as batteries, supercapacitors, biofuel cells and sensors. Finally, major challenges impeding the field of wearable electrochemical systems are discussed along with future prospects of this exciting field.

Advanced Materials for Printed Wearable Electrochemical Devices: A Review

We designed, fabricated, and tested a sweat-based conductivity sensor device toward a real-time, non-invasive physiological condition monitoring device for humans. Sweat collector, conductivity sensor, and the interfacing circuit were developed and combined to form a wearable device. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based sweat collector was fabricated to collect sweat from skin using the hydraulic pumping action of sweat glands. PDMS sweat collectors were prepared using 3D printed plastic molds. The interfacing circuit was designed based on the results of the conductivity sensor that was characterized by the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. Human testing was performed to prove the feasibility of the proposed sweat sensing system for the real-time non-invasive monitoring of human sweat. The first reading from the device was obtained in 7–20 min depending on the subject and the location of the electrodes. Sweat rate plateaued after a consistent work load of exercise, as was expected. The sweat conductivity decayed after the first readings due to the initial mineral content of the skin. Finally, an increasing trend in sweat conductivity was observed which may be due to subjects’ changing hydration level.
