An image-forming device has a plurality of cylindrical image-carrying members, and an optical scanning unit. The plurality of cylindrical image-carrying members is provided in a main casing for rotating about respective rotational axes. The rotational axes are parallel to one another and juxtaposed in a single direction. The optical scanning unit is provided in the main casing and has a plurality of laser generators, a single rotatable polygon mirror, a plurality of mirrors, and a plurality of lenses. The plurality of laser generators is provided one-to-one relationship to the plurality of image-carrying members to emit respective laser beams. The single rotatable polygon mirror deflects the respective laser beams to scan the respective image-carrying members therewith. The plurality of mirrors is provided one-to-one relationship to the plurality of image-carrying members to guide the respective laser beams along respective optical paths to the respective image-carrying members. The plurality of lenses is provided one-to-one relationship to the plurality of image-carrying members and provided in the respective optical paths and between the respective mirrors and the respective image-carrying members. Distances from the respective mirrors to the respective image-carrying members being equal to one another.

An electrostatic copying apparatus comprising a lower supporting frame, an upper supporting frame mounted on the lower supporting frame for pivotal movement between an open position and a closed position, a document placing means having a transparent plate for placing a document to be copied thereon, an optical unit and a driving source. Either the document placing means or at least a part of the optical unit is mounted reciprocally on the upper supporting frame and drivingly coupled to the driving source via a power transmission mechanism. The apparatus further includes an automatic locking means for automatically locking the document placing means or at least a part of the optical unit and cancelling the locking according to an operation of moving the upper supporting frame to an open or closed position or an operation incident to this moving operation.

Various print parameters or conditions are monitored relating to the drying of the ink on print media. These print parameters include print data density, ink characteristics and ambient humidity. The monitored print parameters are used to control the drying. In addition the monitored print parameters are used to control the detaching of the print media from a rotary transport. In this manner, the printer approaches an optimization of the drying and detaching function with respect to time and energy.

A data communication system having a master unit, an interface, and one or more remote units. The master unit includes a programmable controller having a data processor, memory storage for storing programs and command and data bytes, and address and data buses. The interface is connected to the master unit via the address and data buses, and includes a memory connected to the data bus for temporarily storing command and output data bytes from the master unit pending transmittal thereof to the remote units and for storing input data bytes from the remote units pending transfer thereof to the master unit. A first communication path, along which command and data bytes from the interface memory are transmitted to the remote units, couples the interface with the remote units. A second communication path, along which input data bytes from the remote units to the interface memory are transmitted, couples the remote units with the interface.

A film sheet load magazine is adapted to hold a stack of superimposed films with at least central portions of the films in a curved configuration and leading ends of the films adjacent a film separator mechanism. The curvature of the films is such that they retain themselves in desired positions in the magazine independent of the orientation of the films with respect to gravity. When a top cover of the magazine is opened, floating primary feed rollers are raised by spring-biasing assemblies to facilitate loading of the films under the rollers, and when the top cover is subsequently closed, the rollers are moved into feeding engagement with an innermost film, and the films are held in position by leaf biasing springs. A cleaning mechanism removes contaminants from the primary feed rollers, which feed each film to secondary feed rollers driven at a faster speed than the primary feed rollers. A number-of-films-remaining mechanism, which may be of a mechanical or electrical type which is adjustable for films of different thicknesses, and which is automatically preset to the number of films in the magazine upon closing of the cover, is responsive to downward movement of the primary feed rollers as each innermost film is fed from the stack. A system also is provided for indicating if enough films remain in the magazine for a particular film processing operation and to inhibit operation of an associated device if insufficient films remain. The magazine may be self-driven or driven from an associated device.

Xerographic apparatus for reproducing information on selected one of periodically presented documents includes: means for providing print signals time associated with the selected documents; a paper web; toner; and means for providing toner images, corresponding to information on selected documents, on successive sections of the web. The web passes through a fuser assembly whose temperature is sensed and controlled. Control is accomplished with: (1) means responsive to said print signals, for turning the fuser on for periods of time related to intervals of time occurring between successive print signals, each of said periods of time occurring during an interval immediately prior to the presentation of a toner image, related to the first of successive signals, to the fuser; (2) means for turning the fuser on upon presentation of a toner image to the fuser; and (3) means responsive to the temperature in the fuser for inhibiting means (1) and (2) to turn the fuser off after specific timer periods.

Scanning and selection methods and apparatus as well as an electrophotographic printing system employing such scanning and selection apparatus are provided in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention a plurality of coded data records containing selection information and a plurality of coded data records to be classified for selection purposes are scanned by code sensing devices. Code information from each of the plurality of coded data records containing selection information is loaded in sequence into memory apparatus to store therein the selection conditions to be imposed upon the plurality of coded data records to be classified for selection purposes. The selection information obtained being directed to a plurality of selection considerations and such sequence being arranged in a manner so that each of the plurality of selection considerations is defined in different areas of the memory apparatus. Subsequently code information from each of the plurality of coded data records to be classified is loaded in comparing apparatus for comparison with the selection conditions to be imposed as stored in the memory apparatus, the comparing apparatus acting to impose each of the plurality of selection considerations upon code information from each of the plurality of coded data records to be classified and provide a classification signal for each of the plurality of coded data records to be classified for selection purposes based upon all of the selection considerations imposed.
