Ultrasound (US) is one of the most widely used modalities for clinical intervention and diagnosis due to the merits of providing non-invasive, radiation-free, and real-time images. However, free-hand US examinations are highly operator-dependent. Robotic US System (RUSS) aims at overcoming this shortcoming by offering reproducibility, while also aiming at improving dexterity, and intelligent anatomy and disease-aware imaging. In addition to enhancing diagnostic outcomes, RUSS also holds the potential to provide medical interventions for populations suffering from the shortage of experienced sonographers. In this paper, we categorize RUSS as teleoperated or autonomous. Regarding teleoperated RUSS, we summarize their technical developments, and clinical evaluations, respectively. This survey then focuses on the review of recent work on autonomous robotic US imaging. We demonstrate that machine learning and artificial intelligence present the key techniques, which enable intelligent patient and process-specific, motion and deformation-aware robotic image acquisition. We also show that the research on artificial intelligence for autonomous RUSS has directed the research community toward understanding and modeling expert sonographers’ semantic reasoning and action. Here, we call this process, the recovery of the “language of sonography”. This side result of research on autonomous robotic US acquisitions could be considered as valuable and essential as the progress made in the robotic US examination itself. This article will provide both engineers and clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of RUSS by surveying underlying techniques. Additionally, we present the challenges that the scientific community needs to face in the coming years in order to achieve its ultimate goal of developing intelligent robotic sonographer colleagues. These colleagues are expected to be capable of collaborating with human sonographers in dynamic environments to enhance both diagnostic and intraoperative imaging.

Robotic ultrasound imaging: State-of-the-art and future perspectives

Automation in the modern world has become a necessity for humans. Intelligent mobile robots have become necessary to perform various complex tasks in healthcare and industry environments. Mobile robots have gained attention during the pandemic; human–robot interaction has become vibrant. However, there are many challenges in obtaining human–robot interactions regarding maneuverability, controllability, stability, drive layout and autonomy. In this paper, we proposed a stability and control design for a telepresence robot called auto-MERLIN. The proposed design simulated and experimentally verified self-localization and maneuverability in a hazardous environment. A model from Rieckert and Schunck was initially considered to design the control system parameters. The system identification approach was then used to derive the mathematical relationship between the manipulated variable of robot orientation control. The theoretical model of the robot mechanics and associated control were developed. A design model was successfully implemented, analyzed mathematically, used to build the hardware and tested experimentally. Each level takes on excellent tasks for the development of auto-MERLIN. A higher level always uses the services of lower levels to carry out its functions. The proposed approach is comparatively simple, less expensive and easily deployable compared to previous methods. The experimental results showed that the robot is functionally complete in all aspects. A test drive was performed over a given path to evaluate the hardware, and the results were presented. Simulation and experimental results showed that the target path is maintained quite well. 

Orientation Control Design of a Telepresence Robot: An Experimental Verification in Healthcare System

Threat Detection and Mitigation for Tactile Internet Driven Consumer IoT-Healthcare System

With the increasing demand for new healthcare solutions and technologies, such as those resulting from the COVID-19 crisis, and the growing elderly population, exoskeletons for teleoperation are a promising solution for many future medical applications. In this context, we propose two force- sensitive upper-limb exoskeletons for teleoperation, that are characterized by: i) torque-controlled robotic actuators, ii) rigid-body model compensations, and iii) a lightweight design achieved through the use of Bowden cable transmissions and remotely placed actuators. Specifically, we present a semi-active upper-limb exoskeleton for which we demonstrate human- device interaction control and bilateral teleoperation with force- feedback, evaluated via simulation, in the lab and over the Internet. We also introduce a design for a future fully-active upper-limb exoskeleton with two contact force/torque sensors, for a dual-arm device, which features a novel 3-degrees-of- freedom exoskeleton shoulder design and a contact wrench mitigation controller, as demonstrated through simulation. With this work, we propose the essential technical steps towards a novel teleoperation system for elderly care. 

A Force-Sensitive Exoskeleton for Teleoperation: An Application in Elderly Care Robotics

Robotic applications have often quickly transitioned from industrial to social. Because of this, robots can now engage with people in a natural way and blend in with their surroundings. Due to the lack of medical professionals, growing healthcare costs, and the exponential rise in the population of vulnerable groups like the ill, elderly, and children with developmental disabilities, the use of social robots in the healthcare system is expanding. As a result, social robots are employed in the medical field to entertain and educate hospitalized patients about health issues, as well as to assist the elderly and sick. They are also employed in the dispensing of medications, rehabilitation, and emotional and geriatric care. Thus, social robots raise the standard and effectiveness of medical care. This article explains how patients and healthcare professionals collaborate with robots in the healthcare industry. The objectives of this collaboration are to resolve moral and legal concerns, improve patient outcomes, and improve healthcare delivery. It has a broad range of uses, including telemedicine, rehabilitation, and robotic surgical support. Human-robot interaction is the term used to describe interactions between social robots and people. Many obstacles stand in the way of human-robot interaction in healthcare, including safety concerns, acceptability issues, appropriateness, usefulness, and the worry that robots may replace human carers. In the end, these difficulties result in a poor adoption rate for robotic technology. As a result, the applications and difficulties of human-robot interaction in healthcare are thoroughly evaluated in this research. This study also reviews future safety prospects from human-robot interaction in healthcare, as well as ethical and usability issues including privacy, trust, and safety, and our aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the use of robots in healthcare, including their applications, benefits, challenges, and prospects, to facilitate a deeper understanding of this evolving field.

Human-Robot Collaboration for Healthcare: A Narrative Review

The current crisis surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the amount of responsibility and the workload on our healthcare system and, above all, on the medical staff around the world. In this work, we propose a promising approach to overcome this problem using robot-assisted telediagnostics, which allows medical experts to examine patients from distance. The designed telediagnostic system consists of two robotic arms. Each robot is located at the doctor and patient sites. Such a system enables the doctor to have a direct conversation via telepresence and to examine patients through robot-assisted inspection (guided tactile and audiovisual contact). The proposed bilateral teleoperation system is redundant in terms of teleoperation control algorithms and visual feedback. Specifically, we implemented two main control modes: joint-based and displacement-based teleoperation. The joint-based mode was implemented due to its high transparency and ease of mapping between Leader and Follower whereas the displacement-based is highly flexible in terms of relative pose mapping and null-space control. Tracking tests between Leader and Follower were conducted on our system using both wired and wireless connections. Moreover, our system was tested by seven medical doctors in two experiments. User studies demonstrated the system's usability and it was successfully validated by the medical experts.
