Spatial-explicit carbon emission-sequestration balance estimation and evaluation of emission susceptible zones in an Eastern Himalayan city using Pressure-Sensitivity-Resilience framework: An approach towards achieving low carbon cities

Carbon footprint at institutions of higher education: The case of the University of Oulu.

Eco-innovation promotes sustainable economic growth while mitigating environmental impacts. It has evolved into an essential tool for firms seeking to align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. A total of 723 articles from Web of Science and Scopus databases were analyzed in the timespan of 2001–2022 to unveil the contributions and interconnections among eco-innovation, sustainable development, and the SDGs. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive performance analysis and science mapping using Bibliometrix R-package and VosViewer, respectively. The analysis highlights the influential authors, journals, countries, and thematic trends of research articles. The trend analysis shows that carbon emission limitation, targeting SDGs in isolation, and environmental economics are gradually becoming mainstream. Eco-innovation’s transformative potential spans economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, though its studies have primarily focused on its environmental implications. This can offer new research directions to researchers and will be beneficial for framework development. 

Exploring the Nexus of Eco-Innovation and Sustainable Development: A Bibliometric Review and Analysis

The increasing issue of global warming has received tremendous attention from researchers around the world as researchers are actively publishing their findings related to environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint, and air quality. In this bibliometric review, Scopus database was accessed to retrieve publications from 1971 to 2021, related to carbon footprint of buildings which is significantly associated with global warming and air quality. The results suggested that 41% of publications were published in close access journals requiring nominal subscription fee and/or institutional permissions for access to articles. Only 1% of publications were in press for publication, while 99% of them were online available. The trend of publications on carbon footprint has increased after 2002 and is also increasing in recent years as the topic is widely studied in many fields such as environmental sciences, engineering, materials sciences, earth and planetary sciences, chemical engineering, and energy. Approximately 97% publications were peer-reviewed journal articles. The authors, i.e., Aresta, M., Lin, T.P., and Persily, A.K., published highest number of publications among all on topic of carbon footprint. However, other authors, i.e., Cai, W., Chen, Z., Ma, M. Paik, I., and Pomponi, F., have published two publications each on carbon footprint of buildings. The funding for research on carbon footprint of buildings is mainly received from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Tianjin University. However, the National Taiwan University, George Mason University, and Universita degi Studi di Bari hold 3% share in total number of publications on carbon footprint of buildings. As China and the USA are countries with highest share in global carbon footprint, both countries also have highest contribution in research on carbon footprint, followed by South Korea, the UK, Japan, Italy, Germany, Taiwan, etc. The study also concluded that, due to its wider readability and understanding, most of the publications were in the English language.

Global trends in research on carbon footprint of buildings during 1971–2021: a bibliometric investigation

Expanding cities means increasing the need for energy in the residential sector. The supply of this energy must be in environmentally friendly ways; one method of meeting demand in the residential sector is the use of combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems. The current review paper shows that due to the high cost of gas and electricity, CCHP can be used in various sectors, such as hospitals and airports, to reduce energy consumption with lower environmental impacts by using renewable energy systems as the main driver. While CCHP systems are not feasible in tropical regions with high cooling demand, a solar hybrid system is a superior candidate for regions with sufficient radiation. CCHP can also be used in sectors such as wastewater treatment units, desalination systems, and hydrogen production units to improve performance and increase productivity. The carbon and water footprints of CCHP systems are discussed in detail. The main drivers for reducing carbon and water footprints are improving system components such as the combustion engine and increasing productivity by expanding the system to multi-generation systems. Finally, the carbon tax index can help reduce carbon emissions if properly used in the right context. Based on our best knowledge, there is no extensive review of the environmental aspects of CCHP systems in the literature.

Environmental Aspects of the Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) Systems: A Review

Calculating the carbon footprint is fundamental to understand how an organization’s activities impact global sustainability. The main challenge is how to calculate it when environmental aspects are intangible assets. The present paper investigates in what ways the environmental effects of 13 aspects in relation with R&D activities in an applied research center could contribute to sustainable development. For this purpose, we described methodology to routinely measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and calculate the carbon footprint (CF) of all research activities related to intangible assets (R&D projects, researchers’ knowledge and software libraries) with real-time data being provided. Selection of conversion factors to express all GHG emissions are described, in particular those related to air travel on account of its greatest contribution to CF. In addition, these data were used as a factor in assessing the environmental impact of the center, under ISO 14001. As a result, our center can manage its CF and make decisions about how to enhance sustainability awareness at all levels of the organization and gradually improve CF data, of which the main contributors were transportation and travel (66.4%) and electricity (33.1%) in 2018.
