During the last decades, extensive research has been carried out on using reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material in the production of hot recycled mix asphalt. Unfortunately, the aged, stiff, and brittle binder in the RAP typically increases the mixture stiffness and can therefore cause fatigue and low-temperature damages. In the scientific literature, there are many studies concerning the aging and rejuvenation of bitumen, but there is a lack of up-to-date reviews that bring them together, especially those facing the phenomena from a chemical point of view. In this paper, a recap of the chemical aspects of virgin, aged, and rejuvenated bitumen is proposed in order to provide a useful summary of the state of the art, with the aim of both encouraging the use of an increasing quantity of RAP in hot mix asphalt and trying to give indications for further research.

A Review on Bitumen Aging and Rejuvenation Chemistry: Processes, Materials and Analyses

Bitumen improvement with bio-oil and natural or organomodified montmorillonite: Structure, rheology, and adhesion of composite asphalt binders

ABSTRACT This paper studied the effects of CNTs on high-temperature rheological and chemical properties of SBS modified asphalt. Molecular dynamics simulation, DSR, BBR, and FTIR spectrometer were performed to evaluate the molecular motion state, rheological and chemical properties of CNTs and SBS composite modified asphalt binders at different aging states. The MD results indicated that CNTs could absorb components in SBS-modified asphalt and restrict the movement and diffusion of SBS and asphalt molecules, which enhanced the stability of SBS-modified asphalt. Meanwhile, the addition of CNTs could improve the rheological properties, temperature susceptibility, and rutting resistance of SBS-modified asphalt at high temperatures. The heterogeneity between CNTs and SBS-modified asphalt was demonstrated and it was the key to the high-temperature performance improvement. Besides, the low-temperature performance also could be improved by appropriate CNTs content. In addition, the FTIR results suggested that there was a lack of change in chemical functional groups with CNTs modification in asphalt binder. Moreover, the CNTs had a limited impact on delaying oxidation and played an active role in enhancing high-temperature performance under different aging conditions.

Carbon Nanotubes for Improving Rheological and Chemical Properties of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Modified Asphalt Binder

At present, rutting and cracking have become serious issues in asphalt pavement, especially in the areas of summer heat and winter cold. Nanomodifier has been widely used in recent years due to its unique properties in improving the characteristics of asphalt binders. To make better use of nanomodifier to solve the problem of rutting and cracking of pavement, a compressive review on the high- and low-temperature performance of nanomodified asphalt is performed. The results indicate that for high- and low-temperature performance of asphalt binder, the effectiveness of nanomodification is found to be strictly influenced by the combination of original asphalt type, nanomodifier type, nanomodifier dosage, nanoparticle size, and preparation of nanomodified asphalt, and the high-temperature antirutting performance and low-temperature crack resistance of final blends are various with the combination. Chemical composition, microstructure, dispersion, and compatibility of final blends were the possible reason causing the difference. The rational selection of the combination can improve the high-temperature rutting resistance and the low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt binder. So far, there is a lack of systematic investigation in this regard. Therefore, it is very necessary to study systematically the original asphalt, nanomodifier, nanomodifier dosage, nanoparticle size, and preparation of nanomodified asphalt effect on the high and low performance of nanomodified asphalt, especially in the modification mechanism in the future.
