Personality Associations With WhatsApp Usage and Usage of Alternative Messaging Applications to Protect One's Own Data

Background: Socially desirable responding within the context of self-reported surveys is a well-known and persistent problem that plagues quantitative studies. Such forms of responding are particularly problematic within the context of personality-based studies that investigate privacy-related decision-making. In such instances, certain respondents may feel pressured to provide socially desirable responses, which reduces the overall quality of the collected data.Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the extent to which the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) elicit socially desirable responses within the context of privacy-related decision-making.Method: To evaluate their hypotheses, the authors empirically situate their study within the context of respondents’ intended use of Facebook privacy settings. To this end, 576 survey responses were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).Results: It was found that some personality traits were indeed significantly related to socially desirable responding – albeit not always as expected. For example, highly agreeable individuals were unlikely to provide socially desirable responses: choosing honest responses. Neuroticism, on the other hand, had the opposite effect.Conclusion: Based on the results, the authors conclude that neurotic individuals seem predisposed towards responding in a socially desirable manner within the context of privacy-related surveys. The authors, therefore, advise researchers within the field of privacy-based personality studies to take care when analysing their results.

Socially desirable responding within the context of privacy-related research: A personality perspective

Abstract In this article, we highlight current research directions in the Technikpsychologie research area, using the example of the interdisciplinary research work of FAI (Work and Engineering Psychology Research Group at the Technical University of Darmstadt) and the articles included in this special issue. To this end, we relate the articles in this special issue from the research areas of road traffic planning (Hupfer et al.), usable IT security and privacy solutions (Renaud), social aspects of technically mediated communication (Diefenbach), human-centered interface design (Mucha et al.), aviation safety (Santel), human-centered design of autonomous vehicles (Lindner &amp; Stoll), and perceptual psychology-oriented product design (Zandi &amp; Khanh) to current research projects at FAI. Practical Relevance Technical products only offer added value by efficiently supporting users in achieving their goals if they have been developed appropriately for the context of use and the individual characteristics of the users. The human-centered design of—especially technical—products reflects this through an iterative and participatory development process. In this article, we describe nine examples of such human-centered design of technology products. The research results and the methods presented provide insights for developers and decision-makers in the fields of transportation, IT, vehicle development and general product design.

Current topics of interdisciplinary cooperation between engineering and human sciences

Although social networks like Facebook have become an important part of social communication and daily life for many people, most users have concerns regarding their privacy on Facebook. In order to gain a deeper understanding of how users try to protect their private data on Facebook, we conducted an online survey with 280 German Facebook users. We used regression analyses to investigate if usage motivation and personality relate to the management of privacy settings as well as the deployment of other protection strategies in Facebook, such as blocking certain contacts or deleting a post or photo/video tag. Our results showed that Facebook users with rather lax privacy settings have a greater feeling of being meaningful and stimulated when using Facebook than users with rather strict privacy settings. Furthermore, Facebook users scoring high on extraversion and low on agreeableness tend to use more other protection strategies besides the management of privacy settings. However, no association could be found between usage motivation and the deployment of other protection strategies on the one hand, and between personality and the management of privacy settings on the other hand. The results indicate that it is important for privacy researchers as well as product and privacy intervention designers to consider the user’s motivation to share personal data, because only if privacy studies and interventions account for this important factor, it is possible not only to gain a complete picture of the privacy behavior of users, but also to influence it.
