Toyota production system : beyond large-scale production

Value stream mapping (VSM) is an important tool of the lean approach and is used to identify value-adding activities and those considered wasteful of materials and the flow of information and people. However, when not applied correctly, VSM can complicate the identification of waste, lead to misinterpretations and assessment mistakes, and undermine the implementation of future improvements. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the main difficulties and limitations encountered during the construction of current state maps, analysis of the associated causes, and pointing out of guidelines to facilitate the use of VSM to map processes. To do so, a search and evaluation of papers in journals, conferences, theses, and dissertations was conducted, and the articles were categorized according to the field of application (factory floor, supply chain, product development and services) and approach (theoretical or practical). In conclusion, this paper criticizes some ways that VSM has been used, observing that important constraints created by its application must be considered and that when used incorrectly, the tool can lead to mistakes that can cause problems instead of benefits. Considering the problems identified, the paper suggests future works for improving the use of VSM for mapping processes.

Buscando llenar este vacio, este trabajo tiene como objetivo identificar la importancia de evaluar la logistica interna, identificando sus partes componentes, como se estructuran y se miden, basados en la literatura y en respuestas de expertos en este campo. El grado de importancia de estas partes sera evaluado por tres empresas, mediante una escala Likert. Se muestra la identificacion de las partes componentes de la logistica interna, los pesos y prioridades de estas partes, y su indice de desempeno, lo que permite a las empresas mejorar su competitividad. Looking to fill this gap, this paper aims to identify the importance of evaluating internal logistics, identifying its component parts and how they are structured and measured, based on the literature and answers of experts in this field. Outsourcing in non-developed supplier markets: a lean thinking approach

The paper presents the problems with integration of the companies within the supply chain. Usually the separate actions are undertaken by the companies to implement lean tools for production systems and external logistics processes. This situation leads to minor results or moving the costs between production and logistics processes instead of reduction. The purpose of the paper is to present the new version of Value Stream Mapping method, focused on synchronised reorganisation of company production system, external logistics processes between the company and its suppliers as well as suppliers’ production processes. This paper shows the techniques currently used to support cooperation between enterprises and will demonstrate their incompleteness and how they can be improved.

Cooperation of Lean Enterprises — Techniques used for Lean Supply Chain.

This paper is based on the findings from the project funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland. It presents the application of value stream mapping in supply chains and some inadequacy of this method for supply chain integration. Based on the findings, a new Supplier Customer Production process Integration SCPI methodology is proposed. The paper presents problems with integration of companies within the lean supply chain. Usually separate actions are undertaken by the companies within the same supply chain to implement lean management philosophy for production systems and external logistics processes. These isolated activities may lead to pushing inventories from one supply chain partner to another instead of reducing them. To reduce inventories along the supply chain the new approach of production and logistics process improvement needs to be applied. The new concept must take into consideration influence of local improvements in one plant on other cooperating enterprises as well as on the logistics system between them.
