Three-dimensional mouse brain cytoarchitecture revealed by laboratory-based x-ray phase-contrast tomography.
Mareike Töpperwien,Martin Krenkel,Daniel Vincenz,Franziska Stöber,Anja M. Oelschlegel,Jürgen Goldschmidt,Tim Salditt +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that even compact laboratory CT at an optimized liquid-metal jet microfocus source combined with suitable phase-retrieval algorithms and a novel tissue preparation can provide cellular and subcellular resolution in millimeter sized samples of mouse brain.
A phase-retrieval toolbox for X-ray holography and tomography.
Leon M. Lohse,Anna Lena Robisch,Mareike Töpperwien,Simon Maretzke,Martin Krenkel,Johannes Hagemann,Tim Salditt +6 more
TL;DR: The package is called HoloTomoToolbox and comprises a set of algorithms for phase retrieval in the direct-contrast regime, as well as in the holographic regime, which is used for high-resolution cone-beam synchrotron recordings.
Contrast enhancement for visualizing neuronal cytoarchitecture by propagation-based x-ray phase-contrast tomography.
TL;DR: This work uses propagation-based phase-contrast x-ray tomography to perform 3d virtual histology on cerebellar tissue from mice and evaluates the influence of different embedding media on contrast formation and examines the applicability of the different sample preparations both at a synchrotron-based holotomography setup as well as a laboratory source.

Axonal Ensheathment in the Nervous System of Lamprey: Implications for the Evolution of Myelinating Glia
Marie-Theres Weil,Marie-Theres Weil,Saskia Heibeck,Mareike Töpperwien,Susanne tom Dieck,Torben Ruhwedel,Tim Salditt,María Celina Rodicio,Jennifer R. Morgan,Klaus-Armin Nave,Klaus-Armin Nave,Wiebke Möbius,Wiebke Möbius,Hauke B. Werner +13 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that ensheathment, radial sorting, and presumably also metabolic support of axons are ancient functions of glial cells that predate the evolutionary emergence of myelin in jawed vertebrates.

Fiber orientation in a whole mouse heart reconstructed by laboratory phase-contrast micro-CT.
TL;DR: In this paper, a phase-contrast x-ray tomography study of wild type C57BL/6 mouse hearts is presented, which is a nondestructive approach to the microanatomy on the scale of the entire excised organ.
