Hierarchical and hollow oxide nanostructures are very promising gas sensor materials due to their high surface area and well-aligned nanoporous structures with a less agglomerated configurations. Various synthetic strategies to prepare such hierarchical and hollow structures for gas sensor applications are reviewed and the principle parameters and mechanisms to enhance the gas sensing characteristics are investigated. The literature data clearly show that hierarchical and hollow nanostructures increase both the gas response and response speed simultaneously and substantially. This can be explained by the rapid and effective gas diffusion toward the entire sensing surfaces via the porous structures. Finally, the impact of highly sensitive and fast responding gas sensors using hierarchical and hollow nanostructures on future research directions is discussed.

This critical review focuses on the development of anion sensors, being either fluorescent and/or colorimetric, based on the use of the 1,8-naphthalimide structure; a highly versatile building unit that absorbs and emits at long wavelengths. The review commences with a short description of the most commonly used design principles employed in chemosensors, followed by a discussion on the photophysical properties of the 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide structure which has been most commonly employed in both cation and anion sensing to date. This is followed by a review of the current state of the art in naphthalimide-based anion sensing, where systems using ureas, thioureas and amides as hydrogen-bonding receptors, as well as charged receptors have been used for anion sensing in both organic and aqueous solutions, or within various polymeric networks, such as hydrogels. The review concludes with some current and future perspectives including the use of the naphthalimides for sensing small biomolecules, such as amino acids, as well as probes for incorporation and binding to proteins; and for the recognition/sensing of polyanions such as DNA, and their potential use as novel therapeutic and diagnostic agents (95 references).

The organophosphate class of compounds includes common herbicides as well as highly toxic nerve gases whose detection is important from an environmental and a public safety perspective. We describe here a fluorescence turn-on sensor array for the rapid detection and quantitation of relevant organophosphates in neutral water. The array elements self-assemble from commercially available dyes and PAMAM dendrimers, and sensing is based on an indicator displacement assay. Data interpretation through pattern recognition methods (PCA, LDA) showed excellent cluster separation and sample classification. In addition, we were also able to use this system for simultaneous differentiation and quantitative analysis of methylphosphonate (a nerve gas byproduct), glyphosate (a ubiquitous herbicide), and inorganic phosphate over a wide range of concentrations (10 μM to 2 mM).

An array sensing scheme for the differentiation of small peptides and their phosphorylated analogues is introduced. The technique involves a series of receptors created by appending random peptides to a C(3v) symmetric scaffold that binds phosphomonoesters. Five specific peptide sequences were selected through a screening technique. In addition to cross reactivity being created by the peptides in the receptors, three metal ions and three pH indicators are used to create a suite of 45 indicator displacement assays. The colorimetric data from the 45 sensing ensembles is collected in a 96-well plate reader, and linear discriminant analysis gives patterns resulting in 100% classification of the peptides. The approach demonstrates a generalizable principle to create pattern-based recognition protocols for complex analytes.
