We have performed fermion Monte Carlo variational calculations to determine the equation of state of the uniform electron one-component plasma in two and three dimensions. The ground-state excess energies calculated by the Monte Carlo method are very precise and in agreement with those of other calculations in the metallic density range and in the very-low-density Wigner crystals. Three phases have been investigated: the Wigner crystal, the normal or unpolarized fluid, and the polarized fluid. The Wigner crystal has the lowest energy for ${r}_{s}g67$ in three dimensions and ${r}_{s}g33$ in two dimensions. The totally polarized quantum fluid is stable for $26l{r}_{s}l67$ in three dimensions and for $13l{r}_{s}l33$ in two dimensions, and the normal or unpolarized fluid is stable at higher densities ${r}_{s}l26$ in three dimensions and ${r}_{s}l13$ in two dimensions. A pseudopotential with no adjustable parameters, derived from the random-phase approximation, is found to give excellent energies. The present results lend support to earlier conjectures that the ground state of the electron gas will be spin polarized at intermediate densities.

Reconfiguring Frontier Spaces: The territorialization of resource control

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have become the epicenters of ‘land wars’ across India, with farmers resisting the state's forcible transfer of their land to capitalists. Based on 18 months of research focused on an SEZ in Rajasthan, this paper illuminates the role of ‘accumulation by dispossession’ (ABD) in Indian capitalism today and its consequences for rural India. It argues that the existing theories of land grabs do not adequately explain why dispossession becomes necessary to accumulation at particular times and places, and seeks to reconstruct Harvey's theory of ABD to adequately account for it. It then shows the specific kind of rentier- and IT-driven accumulation that dispossession is making possible in SEZs and the non–labor-absorbing, real-estate–driven agrarian transformation this generates in the surrounding countryside. Despite persistent calls for examining the diversity of Latin America’s “pink tide,” many scholars continue to divide the governments into a simplistic “good” or moderate left and a “bad” or radical/nationalist left. Ecuador’s Rafael Correa is inevitably included with Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Bolivia’s Evo Morales as part of a triad of radical left-leaning governments in South America. While Correa, along with Chavez and Morales, has faced threats to his power from the traditional conservative oligarchy, the greatest challenges to his government have come from the social-movement left.
