Achieving natural resource utilization efficiency (NRUE) is a critical objective in addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and the risks associated with the finite availability of mineral resources. Enhancing NRUE can mitigate environmental impacts and support sustainable development for future generations. In this context, green innovation emerges as a pivotal driver of environmental sustainability and resource conservation. However, its potential role in advancing the NRUE has not been fully explored. To fill this gap, this study conducts an empirical analysis of 268 Chinese cities from 2010 to 2022, examining the impact of green innovation on NRUE. This study also incorporates the mediating role of environmental regulations in shaping this impact. The findings demonstrate that green innovation significantly enhances NRUE, primarily by facilitating industrial structural upgrading and reducing resource dependence. Additionally, environmental regulations strengthen the positive effects of green innovation, further amplifying its contribution to NRUE. Moreover, geographical location and differences in resource endowments among cities lead to variations in the effectiveness of green innovation on NRUE. These findings underscore the complex interplay between green technological progress, proactive government policies, and NRUE, offering valuable insights for policymakers and researchers alike. 

Green innovation and natural resource efficiency: The role of environmental regulations and resource endowment in Chinese cities

Digital industry agglomeration and urban innovation: Evidence from China

This paper investigates the impact of e-commerce participation on household development resilience using a sample of 1229 households in the Shandong and Shaanxi provinces of China in 2022. It constructs the developmental resilience index of farm households from three dimensions of economy, society and culture using the entropy method, and establishes a counterfactual framework using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method. The results suggest that participation in e-commerce has a significant and positive impact on farming household development resilience. The PSM method estimates that participation in e-commerce increases the developmental resilience of farming households by 9.63% compared to non-participation, with economic, social, and cultural resilience increasing by 9.29%, 9.84%, and 9.92%, respectively. The robustness test results confirm the findings. Further analysis reveals that participation in e-commerce enhances farm household development resilience through three mechanisms: improving economic efficiency, network relationship linkage, and risk appetite. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of e-commerce participation on household development resilience varies among farmers with different endowment constraints. In particular, farmers with more years of education and cooperative members benefit more from e-commerce participation, especially live and platform e-commerce. 

Impact of Rural E-Commerce Participation on Farmers’ Household Development Resilience: Evidence from 1229 Farmers in China

How does information flow in the urban network reshape agglomeration externalities? Considering non-linear effects, proximity mechanisms, and industrial heterogeneity

The contradiction between rural socioeconomic changes and residents' demands for a better life poses challenges for sustainable development. Industrial revitalization is a core issue in promoting rural economic development. Specialized villages, which focus on specific industries and excel in certain areas, are important pathways for increasing farmers' income, promoting industrial prosperity, and advancing agricultural modernization. However, there has been limited research on the spatial distribution and transformation patterns of rural industrial development models. In particular, in the context of rapid rural restructuring, understanding the spatial evolution of specialized villages is important for future rural development. Taking Henan Province—an important agricultural province in China—as a case, this study finds that the spatial evolution of specialized villages can be divided into six stages and three transformations corresponding to time period. The specialized villages show a spatial pattern of center–periphery, spatial agglomeration, and periphery–center development. In line with China's shift from quantitative expansion to qualitative reform, the types of specialized villages gradually diversified, driven by socioeconomic development and human behavioral factors in different periods. Although China's specialized villages show diversified development patterns, there remains a need to identify development patterns that are consistent with different types of villages to achieve high-quality development, fully implement rural revitalization, and provide typical cases for global sustainable development. By summarizing the development patterns of specialized villages, this study helps to accurately determine the value of specialized villages in rural development and to design more targeted paths for the development of rural industries, which is significant for promoting sustainable rural development and enhancing human well-being. 

Spatial distribution and transformation mechanism of specialized villages in typical agricultural areas: Case study of Henan province, China

In certain developing countries, the e-commerce industries of rural areas are subjected to clustering, which provides an entry point through which the following can be observed: the influence of information and communications technology and the digital economy on spatial connections in rural settlements. Hence, Zhejiang Province, China's leading rural e-commerce province, is selected as the study site. The spatial correlation between e-commerce and the spatial landscape pattern of rural settlements and their network connections is analysed. Moreover, with regard to the spatial network of rural settlements, the driving factors of e-commerce are explored. The research findings demonstrate that: (1) e-commerce cluster areas are primarily distributed where the in-degree is higher than the out-degree, and the betweenness centrality is also significant. (2) E-commerce fosters the expansion and integration of land use in rural settlements and enhances the spatial network connections between rural settlements. (3) In regional economies, e-commerce enhances the connectivity and resource circulation efficiency of spatial networks in rural settlements through scale effects, traffic and informatisation levels, and the logistics development environment. The aforementioned findings contribute to the enrichment of the policy toolbox for rural planning and spatial governance, and the exploration of the market potential of e-commerce development in rural areas. 

Driving spatial network connections in rural settlements: The role of e-commerce

Energy efficiency is critical in managing the economy, resources, and environment. Existing research primarily focuses on the effect of the internal urban innovation resources and their agglomeration externalities on energy efficiency. Importantly, it overlooks the effect of external resources acquired through urban innovation networks, referred to as the ‘borrowing size effect’. This effect becomes particularly pronounced in the innovation-driven energy transformation of the new energy vehicle industry chain. Therefore, drawing on the spatial Durbin and Super-SBM models, this study examined the effects of three representative types of new energy vehicle innovation networks on energy efficiency, and investigated the borrowing size effect of urban innovation networks on innovation resources agglomeration externalities. The research findings revealed that: (1) The entirety and collaboration innovation networks had promising results on energy efficiency; (2) The structure innovation network demonstrated an insignificant impact, but the innovation of upstream, midstream, and downstream in the industry chain individually exhibited a promoting effect; (3) The externalities of the collaboration innovation network demonstrated a positive spatial effect, and a borrowing size effect.

Infrastructure investment plays a key role in steady economic growth. Investment in infrastructure is gradually increasing; however, large-scale infrastructure investment is also associated with efficiency problems and environmental problems, which need to be carefully examined. The entropy weight method and the Super-SBM model are implemented to measure environmental regulation and infrastructure investment efficiency, respectively; and the spatial Durbin model is applied to analyze the influence mechanism and spatial effects of environmental regulation on infrastructure investment efficiency. The results show that spatial agglomeration characteristics exist in both environmental regulation and infrastructure investment efficiency. Besides, environmental regulation can promote infrastructure investment efficiency in general, but it develops an inverted U-shaped relationship as the intensity increases. Lastly, the spillover effects of environmental regulation on infrastructure investment efficiency present a U-shaped relationship. The conclusion is that both environmental regulation and infrastructure investment efficiency in China increased from 2008 to 2020. Besides, moderate environmental regulation is beneficial to infrastructure investment efficiency and restrains spatial spillover, but strict environmental regulation appears to be the opposite. This research expands the literature on environmental regulation and production efficiency and provides a reference basis for formulating effective policies to improve infrastructure investment efficiency from the perspective of the ecological environment.
