The term photonic crystals appears because of the analogy between electron waves in crystals and the light waves in artificial periodic dielectric structures. During the recent years the investigation of one-, two-and three-dimensional periodic structures has attracted a widespread attention of the world optics community because of great potentiality of such structures in advanced applied optical fields. The interest in periodic structures has been stimulated by the fast development of semiconductor technology that now allows the fabrication of artificial structures, whose period is comparable with the wavelength of light in the visible and infrared ranges.

Label-free terahertz microfluidic biosensor for sensitive DNA detection using graphene-metasurface hybrid structures

Metasurface has great capabilities in tailoring the electromagnetic (EM) waves in a controllable way owing to the carefully designed and arranged subwavelength meta-atoms In this review paper, the digital version of metasurface, information metasurface (IM), is systematically introduced with its application in wireless communications IM extends the research scope of metasurface from physics to the information perspective, in which the meta-atoms are represented by using digital codes “0” and “1” to characterize the EM responses It can achieve programmable controls of EM waves in real time by integrating with the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) On the other hand, the digital coding strategy bridges the physical world and digital world, and further make the metasurface realize direct information processing With the outstanding advantages, IMs have shown great potentials to bring revolutionary applications in wireless communications In this article, the basic concepts and principles of IMs and their programmable features are presented first Then it focuses on the IM-based new architecture transmitters, as well as the IM-integrated wireless networks in more detail Finally, the current progress and the future directions of IMs in the wireless communications are respectively summarized

Programmable Controls to Scattering Properties of a Radiation Array

We propose a low-profile broadband planar circularly polarized folded transmitarray antenna (CPFTA) based on well-designed top and bottom metasurfaces (MSs). The top MS is employed to reflect the $x$ -polarized wave as a ground and, at the same time, to convert the $y$ -polarized wave into circularly polarized waves with arbitrary phase shifts in the operation band. A bottom MS is applied to reflect the incident wave and twist its polarization by 90°. The whole CPFTA, including the feeding source of microstrip antenna, and the top and bottom MSs can be fully integrated and fabricated using low-cost printed circuit board technology. Both simulated and measured results demonstrate significant advantages of the proposed antenna, including broad bandwidth, high gain, lower profile, planar geometry, and easy integration. The fabricated sample shows 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 23.2%, 3 dBi gain bandwidth of 11.6%, and the maximum gain of 22.8 dBi at 10.3 GHz with the antenna efficiency of 21.8%. The proposed CPFTA is promising for applications in satellite communications with circularly polarized antennas.

High-Efficiency Synthesizer for Spatial Waves Based on Space-Time-Coding Digital Metasurface

Recent advances of space-time-coding digital metasurfaces demonstrate powerful capabilities in the generation of nonlinear harmonics and the accurate control of the corresponding wavefronts. However, to date the near field manipulation and the experiment characterization are still not explored. In this paper, we propose a space-time-digital coding metasurface to realize accurate manipulation of the near fields at the fundamental and +1st (−1st) harmonics simultaneously, by properly controlling the initial phase and time delay of the time varying reflectivity. A novel mapping system is established to measure the nonlinear near field distributions of multiharmonics. Both the simulation and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Polarization conversion metasurfaces are widely used in optical devices, microwave devices and communication systems, owing to their unique polarization modulation characteristics. However, in some applications (such as folded reflectarrays), the unit cell must be capable of polarization conversion and phase modulation. To the best of our knowledge, there are only a few related designs with both the functionalities. In this paper, we propose a well-performing 1-bit reconfigurable coding metasurface with polarization conversion. It realizes linear-to-linear polarization conversion in a 1.32 GHz bandwidth, and the conversion loss is within 1 dB. Simultaneously, the metasurface achieves a phase difference of approximately 180° by switching the working state of the PIN diodes. This metasurface has great potential for radar detection, folded reflectarrays, and other fields.
