Gut, microbiota-dependent trimethylamine-N-oxide is associated with long-term all-cause mortality in patients with exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Manuel Ottiger,Manuela Nickler,Christian Steuer,Luca Bernasconi,Andreas Huber,Mirjam Christ-Crain,Christoph Henzen,Claus Hoess,Robert Thomann,Werner Zimmerli,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +11 more
TL;DR: Increased circulating TMAO levels per se were associated with long-term all-cause mortality in patients with COPD independent of type of exacerbation, however, this association was largely explained by comorbidities and age.

Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) predicts fatal outcomes in community-acquired pneumonia patients without evident coronary artery disease
Manuel Ottiger,Manuela Nickler,Christian Steuer,Jonas Odermatt,Andreas Huber,Mirjam Christ-Crain,Christoph Henzen,Claus Hoess,Robert Thomann,Werner Zimmerli,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +11 more
TL;DR: TMAO is associated with long-term fatal outcomes in CAP patients without evident CAD and modifiable through antibiotic treatment and chronic modulation of TMAO by targeting the microbiome reduces mortality risk needs to be evaluated in future interventional trials.

Admission kidney function is a strong predictor for the response to nutritional support in patients at nutritional risk
Annika Bargetzi,Nora Emmenegger,Simone Wildisen,Manuela Nickler,Laura Bargetzi,Lara Hersberger,Stephan Segerer,Nina Kaegi-Braun,Pascal Tribolet,Filomena Gomes,Claus Hoess,Vojtech Pavlicek,Stefan Bilz,Sarah Sigrist,Michael Brändle,Christoph Henzen,Robert Thomann,Jonas Rutishauser,Drahomir Aujesky,Nicolas Rodondi,Jacques Donzé,Zeno Stanga,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +23 more
TL;DR: In medical inpatients at nutritional risk, admission kidney function was a strong predictor for the response to nutritional therapy in regard to lowering of 30-day mortality.

Systematic review regarding metabolic profiling for improved pathophysiological understanding of disease and outcome prediction in respiratory infections
Manuela Nickler,Manuel Ottiger,Christian Steuer,Andreas Huber,Janet Byron Anderson,Beat Müller,Philipp Schuetz +6 more
TL;DR: Improved understanding of outcome-specific metabolite signatures in LRTIs may optimize patient management strategies, provide potential new targets for future individual therapy, and thereby improve patients’ chances for survival.
Time-dependent association of glucocorticoids with adverse outcome in community-acquired pneumonia: a 6-year prospective cohort study
Manuela Nickler,Manuel Ottiger,Christian Steuer,Alexander Kutz,Mirjam Christ-Crain,Mirjam Christ-Crain,Werner Zimmerli,Robert Thomann,Claus Hoess,Christoph Henzen,Luca Bernasconi,Andreas Huber,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +13 more
TL;DR: Compared with 11-deoxycortisol, cortisone, and corticosterone, cortisol showed the highest association with mortality in CAP, whereas a more pronounced glucocorticoid stress response on hospital admission was associated with higher short-term adverse outcome, long-term outcome was favorable in these patients.
