Brn3a as a marker of retinal ganglion cells: qualitative and quantitative time course studies in naive and optic nerve-injured retinas.
Francisco M. Nadal-Nicolás,Manuel Jiménez-López,Paloma Sobrado-Calvo,Leticia Nieto-Lopez,Isabel Cánovas-Martínez,Manuel Salinas-Navarro,Manuel Vidal-Sanz,Marta Agudo +7 more
TL;DR: Brn3a can be used as a reliable, efficient ex vivo marker to identify and quantify RGCs in control and optic nerve-injured retinas and showed a spatial distribution comparable to that of FG(+) cells.

Retinal ganglion cell population in adult albino and pigmented mice: a computerized analysis of the entire population and its spatial distribution
Manuel Salinas-Navarro,Manuel Jiménez-López,Francisco J. Valiente-Soriano,Luis Alarcon-Martinez,Marcelino Avilés-Trigueros,S. Mayor,Toby Holmes,R.D. Lund,María Paz Villegas-Pérez,Manuel Vidal-Sanz +9 more
TL;DR: The population of mice R GCs may be counted automatically with a level of confidence comparable to manual counts and the distribution of RGCs adopts a form of regional specialization that resembles a horizontal visual streak.

Ocular hypertension impairs optic nerve axonal transport leading to progressive retinal ganglion cell degeneration.
Manuel Salinas-Navarro,Luis Alarcon-Martinez,Francisco J. Valiente-Soriano,Manuel Jiménez-López,S Mayor-Torroglosa,Marcelino Avilés-Trigueros,María Paz Villegas-Pérez,Manuel Vidal-Sanz +7 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the effects of laser photocoagulation (LP)-induced OHT on the survival and retrograde axonal transport (RAT) of adult rat retinal ganglion cells (RGC) from 1 to 12 wks found that a large proportion of RGCs had their RAT impaired.

Number and distribution of mouse retinal cone photoreceptors: differences between an albino (Swiss) and a pigmented (C57/BL6) strain.
Arturo Ortín-Martínez,Francisco M. Nadal-Nicolás,Manuel Jiménez-López,Juan J. Alburquerque-Béjar,Leticia Nieto-Lopez,Diego García-Ayuso,María Paz Villegas-Pérez,Manuel Vidal-Sanz,Marta Agudo-Barriuso +8 more
TL;DR: Analysis and comparison of the population and topography of cone photoreceptors in two mouse strains using automated routines and a sampling method to manually quantify and infer their total population provide the basis to study cone degeneration and its prevention in pathologic conditions.

Functional and morphological effects of laser-induced ocular hypertension in retinas of adult albino Swiss mice.
Manuel Salinas-Navarro,Luis Alarcon-Martinez,Francisco J. Valiente-Soriano,Arturo Ortín-Martínez,Manuel Jiménez-López,Marcelino Avilés-Trigueros,María Paz Villegas-Pérez,Pedro de la Villa,Manuel Vidal-Sanz +8 more
TL;DR: LP of the perilimbal and episcleral veins resulted in OHT leading to a lack of retrograde axonal transport in approximately 75% of the original RGC population, indicating that increased IOP results in severe damage to the innermost, inner nuclear, and outer nuclear layers of the retina.
