The ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We present a preliminary set of updated NLO parton distributions. For the first time we have a quantitative extraction of the strange quark and antiquark distributions and their uncertainties determined from CCFR and NuTeV dimuon cross sections. Additional jet data from HERA and the Tevatron improve our gluon extraction. Lepton asymmetry data and neutrino structure functions improve the flavour separation, particularly constraining the down quark valence distribution.

Parton distributions for the LHC

We report on a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using 278.8 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment at LNGS. XENON1T utilizes a liquid xenon time projection chamber with a fiducial mass of (1.30±0.01)  ton, resulting in a 1.0 ton yr exposure. The energy region of interest, [1.4,10.6]  keVee ([4.9,40.9] keVnr), exhibits an ultralow electron recoil background rate of [82-3+5(syst)±3(stat)]  events/(ton yr keVee). No significant excess over background is found, and a profile likelihood analysis parametrized in spatial and energy dimensions excludes new parameter space for the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent elastic scatter cross section for WIMP masses above 6  GeV/c2, with a minimum of 4.1×10-47  cm2 at 30  GeV/c2 and a 90% confidence level.

Determination of Feasible Peak and Power Levels

This paper presents a multi-layer perceptron model for the estimation of classrooms number of occupants from sensed indoor environmental data-relative humidity, air temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. The modelling datasets were collected from two classrooms in the Secondary School of Pombal, Portugal. The number of occupants and occupation periods were obtained from class attendance reports. However, post-class occupancy was unknown and the developed model is used to reconstruct the classrooms occupancy by filling the unreported periods. Different model structure and environment variables combination were tested. The model with best accuracy had as input vector 10 variables of five averaged time intervals of relative humidity and carbon dioxide concentration. The model presented a mean square error of 1.99, coefficient of determination of 0.96 with a significance of p-value < 0.001, and a mean absolute error of 1 occupant. These results show promising estimation capabilities in uncertain indoor environment conditions.

Estimation of classrooms occupancy using a multi-layer perceptron

During the earliest phase of architectural design process, practitioners after analyzing the client's design program, legal requirements, topographic constraints, and preferences synthesize these requirements into architectural floor plan drawings. Design decisions taken in this phase may significantly contribute to the building performance. On account of this reason, it is important to estimate and compare alternative solutions, when it is still manageable to change the building design. 
The authors have been developing a prototype tool to assist architects during this initial design phase. It is made up of two algorithms. The first algorithm generates alternative floor plans according to the architect's preferences and requirements, and the client's design program. It consists in one evolutionary strategy approach enhanced with local search technique to allocate rooms on several levels in the two-dimensional space. The second algorithm evaluates, ranks, and optimizes those floor plans according to thermal performance criteria. The prototype tool is coupled with dynamic simulation program, which estimates the thermal behavior of each solution. A sequential variable optimization is used to change several geometric values of different architectural elements in the floor plans to explore the improvement potential. 
In the present communication, the two algorithms are used in an iterative process to generate and optimize the thermal performance of alternative floor plans. In the building simulation specifications of EnergyPlus program, the airflow network model has been used in order to adequately model the air infiltration and the airflows through indoor spaces. A case study of a single-family house with three rooms in a single level is presented.

Contributions of natural ventilation on thermal performance of alternative floor plan designs.

Descrevem-se as metodologias utilizadas num estudo que teve por objectivo a avaliacao do efeito de vedacao promovido por um aparelho de cortina de ar. Foi utilizada uma instalacao experimental a escala real em que, atraves de um jacto de ar descendente gerado por cima da porta, se procurou manter uma dada diferenca de temperatura entre duas salas contiguas. Recorrendo a 16 sondas anemometricas, efectuou-se o mapeamento da temperatura e da velocidade do ar em diversos planos considerados de interesse e, atraves da aquisicao desses dados em continuo, avaliou-se o desenvolvimento e a estabilidade do jacto durante os primeiros minutos de funcionamento da instalacao. Recorreu-se igualmente a uma tecnica de medida do tipo “whole-field” em que o campo de temperaturas do ar e medido indirectamente atraves de um ecra de baixa massa termica que serve de alvo a uma câmara termografica de infra-vermelhos. Ao longo do artigo serao apresentados varios exemplos elucidativos das potencialidades das tecnicas descritas anteriormente.
