EmbraceNet: A robust deep learning architecture for multimodal classification

Classification using multimodal data arises in many machine learning applications. It is crucial not only to model cross-modal relationship effectively but also to ensure robustness against loss of part of data or modalities. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning-based multimodal fusion architecture for classification tasks, which guarantees compatibility with any kind of learning models, deals with cross-modal information carefully, and prevents performance degradation due to partial absence of data. We employ two datasets for multimodal classification tasks, build models based on our architecture and other state-of-the-art models, and analyze their performance on various situations. The results show that our architecture outperforms the other multimodal fusion architectures when some parts of data are not available.

Human activity recognition using multimodal sensors is widely studied in recent days. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep learning model for activity recognition, which fuses features of multiple modalities based on their confidence scores that are automatically determined. The confidence scores efficiently regulate the level of contribution of each sensor. We conduct an experiment on the latest activity recognition dataset. The results confirm that our model outperforms existing methods. We submit the proposed model to the Sussex-Huawei Locomotion-Transportation (SHL) recognition challenge [23] with the team name "Yonsei-MCML."

Confidence-based Deep Multimodal Fusion for Activity Recognition

Recently, several deep learning-based image super-resolution methods have been developed by stacking massive numbers of layers. However, this leads too large model sizes and high computational complexities, thus some recursive parameter-sharing methods have been also proposed. Nevertheless, their designs do not properly utilize the potential of the recursive operation. In this paper, we propose a novel, lightweight, and efficient super-resolution method to maximize the usefulness of the recursive architecture, by introducing block state-based recursive network. By taking advantage of utilizing the block state, the recursive part of our model can easily track the status of the current image features. We show the benefits of the proposed method in terms of model size, speed, and efficiency. In addition, we show that our method outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods.

Lightweight and Efficient Image Super-Resolution with Block State-based Recursive Network

The field of computer vision, where the goal is to allow computer systems to interpret and understand image data, has in recent years seen great advances with the emergence of deep learning. Deep learning, a technique that emulates the information processing of the human brain, has been shown to almost solve the problem of object recognition in image data. One of the next big challenges in computer vision is to allow computers to not only recognize objects, but also activities. This study is an exploration of the capabilities of deep learning for the specific problem area of activity recognition in office environments. The study used a re-labeled subset of the AMI Meeting Corpus video data set to comparatively evaluate different neural network models performance in the given problem area, and then evaluated the best performing model on a new novel data set of office activities captured in a research lab in Malmö University. The results showed that the best performing model was a 3D convolutional neural network (3DCNN) with temporal information in the third dimension, however a recurrent convolutional network (RCNN) using a pre-trained VGG16 model to extract features and put into a recurrent neural network with a unidirectional Long-Short-Term-Memory (LSTM) layer performed almost as well with the right configuration. An analysis of the results suggests that a 3DCNN’s performance is dependent on the camera angle, specifically how well movement is spatially distributed between people in frame.

A Deep Learning Approach to Video Processing for Scene Recognition in Smart Office Environments

Human activity recognition is one of the important research topics in computer vision and video understanding. It is often assumed that high quality video sequences are available for recognition. However, relaxing such a requirement and implementing robust recognition using videos having reduced data rates can achieve efficiency in storing and transmitting video data. Three-dimensional video scalability, which refers to the possibility of reducing spatial, temporal, and quality resolutions of videos, is an effective way for flexible representation and management of video data. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the video scalability on multi-view activity recognition. We employ both a spatiotemporal feature extraction-based method and a deep learning-based method using convolutional and recurrent neural networks. The recognition performance of the two methods is examined, along with in-depth analysis regarding how their performance vary with respect to various scalability combinations. In particular, we demonstrate that the deep learning-based method can achieve significantly improved robustness in comparison to the feature-based method. Furthermore, we investigate optimal scalability combinations with respect to bitrate in order to provide useful guidelines for an optimal operation policy in resource-constrained activity recognition systems.
