A seamless solution transparently addresses the characteristics of nomadic systems, and enables existing network applications to run reliably in mobile environments. The solution extends the enterprise network, letting network managers provide mobile users with easy access to the same applications as stationary users without sacrificing reliability or centralized management. The solution combines advantages of existing wire-line network standards with emerging mobile standards to create a solution that works with existing network applications. A Mobility Management Server coupled to the mobile network maintains the state of each of any number of Mobile End Systems and handles the complex session management required to maintain persistent connections to the network and to other peer processes. If a Mobile End System becomes unreachable, suspends, or changes network address (e.g., due to roaming from one network interconnect to another), the Mobility Management Server maintains the connection to the associated peer task—allowing the Mobile End System to maintain a continuous connection even though it may temporarily lose contact with its network medium. In one example, Mobility Management Server communicates with Mobile End Systems using Remote Procedure Call and Internet Mobility Protocols.

Method and apparatus for providing mobile and other intermittent connectivity in a computing environment

The present invention discloses a novel system for controlling the inbound and outbound data packet flow in a computer network. By controlling the packet flow in a computer network, private networks can be secured from outside attacks in addition to controlling the flow of packets from within the private network to the outside world. A user generates a rule base which is then converted into a set of filter language instruction. Each rule in the rule base includes a source, destination, service, whether to accept or reject the packet and whether to log the event. The set of filter language instructions are installed and execute on inspection engines which are placed on computers acting as firewalls. The firewalls are positioned in the computer network such that all traffic to and from the network to be protected is forced to pass through the firewall. Thus, packets are filtered as they flow into and out of the network in accordance with the rules comprising the rule base. The inspection engine acts as a virtual packet filtering machine which determines on a packet by packet basis whether to reject or accept a packet. If a packet is rejected, it is dropped. If it is accepted, the packet may then be modified. Modification may include encryption, decryption, signature generation, signature verification or address translation. All modifications are performed in accordance with the contents of the rule base. The present invention provides additional security to a computer network by encrypting communications between two firewalls between a client and a firewall. This permits the use of insecure public networks in constructing a WAN that includes both private and public network segments, thus forming a virtual private network.

A system for securing the flow of and selectively modifying packets in a computer network

An apparatus and method is provided for transparent communication between a remote or mobile device and a fixed communication host network. The apparatus and method may include a remote network controller that logically resides between the host network and the existing infrastructure(s) that are used to provide communications network contact with one or more remote devices. The remote network controller is connected to the host communication network as a protocol-appropriate communications controller so that remote devices are indistinguishable to the host network from the locally-attached devices. Each remote device may be provided with an asynchronous serial data interface to communicate with a mobile data controller. The mobile data controller, in combination with the remote network controller, provides end-to-end data communication such that incompatible protocols are transparent to the remote device and host communication network. A router may be provided which selects a communications network in accordance with user configured parameters. The router communicates over a plurality of incompatible networks and is capable of using a variety of different protocols. Switching between the plurality of incompatible networks is transparent to the remote device and host communication network.

The devices are then graphically displayed according to physical connectivity and status. Each status being displayed differently.

Method and apparatus for viewing and managing a configuration of a computer network

A multi-port packet-based bridge is described in which packet transmissions on particular ports or between ports may be monitored on another, monitoring port. Efficient operation is realized by using a multi-processor environment and data structures that allow a packet received on one port to be transmitted to multiple ports without being "copied" multiple times. By using a Supervisory Access Terminal, it is possible to specify various circumstances under which a packet will be sent to the monitoring port. These circumstances include monitoring of all packets incoming to a selected port (or ports), all packets forwarded to a selected port (or ports), and packets generated internally and sent to a selected port (or ports). In addition, all packets forwarded from one selected port to another selected port may be monitored. Port monitoring is supported by particular data structures that promote efficient dispatching of packets and by a Bridging Cache that retains the results of recent dispatch calculations. Similar techniques are applied to multi-port routers.
