Knowledge about the pharmacological benefits of different seeds is an important factor for the cultivation and application of medicinal herbs and plants. The seeds of medicinal plants are stores of valuable and active secondary metabolites that have been commercially and economically beneficial and helpful for medicine and pharmacy. The major parameter of reproduction and the preservation of plants are seeds, which have a functional role in the distribution and establishment of plants in different regions. Five important seeds that have tremendous medicinal and pharmacological benefits are anise, basil, borage, cilantro, and chamomile. Anise seed is used as a spice, either whole or ground, and its essential oil and extract are also obtained from the seeds. Basil seeds have a long history of usage in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, and they are a good source of minerals, are high in fiber (including pectin), and are rich is flavonoids and other polyphenols. Borage seed oil is used for skin disorders, such as seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and neurodermatitis. Coriander is an annual herb that is part of the Apiaceae family, and the seeds are rich in iron, zinc, copper, and essential minerals, which can decrease bad cholesterol and improve good cholesterol in the body. Chamomile can be considered for the treatment of insomnia, hemorrhoids, anxiety, and diarrhea, and it may help with wound healing and skin irritation. Keyword searches for Anise, Seed, Basil, Borage, Cilantro, Chamomile, Seed biology, Traditional medicinal science, and seed anatomy were performed using Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google scholar. The aim of this article review is to survey the pharmacological and health benefits of the seeds of the five aforementioned important medicinal plants.

Five Important Seeds in Traditional Medicine, and Pharmacological Benefits

Although chemotherapy drugs are extensively utilized in cancer therapy, their administration for treatment of patients has faced problems that regardless of chemoresistance, increasing evidence has shown concentration-related toxicity of drugs. Doxorubicin (DOX) is a drug used in treatment of solid and hematological tumors, and its function is based on topoisomerase suppression to impair cancer progression. However, DOX can also affect the other organs of body and after chemotherapy, life quality of cancer patients decreases due to the side effects. Heart is one of the vital organs of body that is significantly affected by DOX during cancer chemotherapy, and this can lead to cardiac dysfunction and predispose to development of cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis, among others. The exposure to DOX can stimulate apoptosis and sometimes, pro-survival autophagy stimulation can ameliorate this condition. Moreover, DOX-mediated ferroptosis impairs proper function of heart and by increasing oxidative stress and inflammation, DOX causes cardiac dysfunction. The function of DOX in mediating cardiac toxicity is mediated by several pathways that some of them demonstrate protective function including Nrf2. Therefore, if expression level of such protective mechanisms increases, they can alleviate DOX-mediated cardiac toxicity. For this purpose, pharmacological compounds and therapeutic drugs in preventing DOX-mediated cardiotoxicity have been utilized and they can reduce side effects of DOX to prevent development of cardiovascular diseases in patients underwent chemotherapy. Furthermore, (nano)platforms are used comprehensively in treatment of cardiovascular diseases and using them for DOX delivery can reduce side effects by decreasing concentration of drug. Moreover, when DOX is loaded on nanoparticles, it is delivered into cells in a targeted way and its accumulation in healthy organs is prevented to diminish its adverse impacts. Hence, current paper provides a comprehensive discussion of DOX-mediated toxicity and subsequent alleviation by drugs and nanotherapeutics in treatment of cardiovascular diseases. 

Doxorubicin-mediated cardiac dysfunction: Revisiting molecular interactions, pharmacological compounds and (nano)theranostic platforms.

RGS7 balances acetylation/de-acetylation of p65 to control chemotherapy-dependent cardiac inflammation

Grapevine development and ripening are complex processes that involve several biochemical pathways, including fatty acid and lipid metabolism. Fatty acids are essential components of lipids, which play crucial roles in fruit maturation and flavor development. However, the dynamics of fatty acid metabolism in grape flowers and berries are poorly understood. In this study, we present those dynamics and investigate the mechanisms of fatty acid homeostasis on ‘Thompson Seedless’ berries using metabolomic and proteomic analyses. Low-polar metabolite profiling indicated a higher abundance of fatty acids at the pre-flowering and pre-veraison stages. Proteomic analyses revealed that grape flowers and berries display unique profiles of proteins involved in fatty acid biosynthesis, triacylglycerol assembly, fatty acid β-oxidation, and lipid signaling. These findings show, for the first time, that fatty acid metabolism also plays an important role in the development of non-oil-rich tissues, opening new perspectives about lipid function and its relation to berry quality.

Proteomic and Low-Polar Metabolite Profiling Reveal Unique Dynamics in Fatty Acid Metabolism during Flower and Berry Development of Table Grapes

Off target damage to vital organ systems is an unfortunate side effect of cancer chemotherapy and remains a major limitation to the use of these essential drugs in the clinic. Despite decades of research, the mechanisms conferring susceptibility to chemotherapy driven cardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity remain unclear. In the livers of patients with a history of chemotherapy, we observed a twofold increase in expression of G protein regulator RGS7 and a corresponding decrease in fellow R7 family member RGS11. Knockdown of RGS7 via introduction of RGS7 shRNA via tail vein injection decreased doxorubicin-induced hepatic collagen and lipid deposition, glycogen accumulation, and elevations in ALT, AST, and triglycerides by approximately 50%. Surprisingly, a similar result could be achieved via introduction of RGS7 shRNA directly to the myocardium without impacting RGS7 levels in the liver directly. Indeed, doxorubicin-treated cardiomyocytes secrete the endocrine factors transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) and TGFβ superfamily binding protein follistatin-related protein 1 (FSTL1). Importantly, RGS7 overexpression in the heart was sufficient to recapitulate the impacts of doxorubicin on the liver and inhibition of TGFβ1 signaling with the receptor blocker GW788388 ameliorated the effect of cardiac RGS7 overexpression on hepatic fibrosis, steatosis, oxidative stress, and cell death as well as the resultant elevation in liver enzymes. Together these data demonstrate that RGS7 controls both the release of TGFβ1 from the heart and the profibrotic and pro-oxidant actions of TGFβ1 in the liver and emphasize the functional significance of endocrine cardiokine signaling in the pathogenesis of chemotherapy drive multiorgan damage. 

Cardiac <scp>RGS7</scp> and <scp>RGS11</scp> drive <scp>TGFβ1</scp>‐dependent liver damage following chemotherapy exposure

Significance Despite decades of clinical use, the utility of cancer chemotherapeutics is limited by adverse cardiac events. Although progress has been made in elucidating mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of chemotherapy-dependent cardiotoxicity, the highly diverse rate of disease progression and lack of biomarkers have stymied efforts to prevent or reverse cardiac damage. Here, we identify RGS7, up-regulated in cardiac cells following chemotherapy exposure, as a key driver of chemotherapy-dependent oxidative stress, cell loss, and fibrosis in heart. Importantly, while RGS7 is both necessary and sufficient to drive chemotherapy-dependent heart damage, modulation of RGS7 expression in cancer cells fails to impact their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs. Thus, RGS7 emerges as a potential therapeutic target in the detection or mitigation of chemotherapy-associated cardiac damage.

A RGS7-CaMKII complex drives myocyte-intrinsic and myocyte-extrinsic mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity

Damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) is a high-value aromatic plant species belonging to the family Rosaceae. It is being cultivated throughout the world for rose essential oil production. Besides its higher demand in the aromatic and cosmetic industry, the essential oil obtained has many pharmacological and cytotoxic activities. The primary concern of growers with the available varieties of damask rose is short flowering duration, low essential oil content and unstable yield. Thus, there is a requirement for developing new stable varieties with higher flower yield and essential oil content. The present study evaluated the variations in the flower yield parameters, essential oil content, and essential oil compounds in different clonal selections of damask rose. These clonal selections have been developed through a half-sib progeny approach from commercially available varieties 'Jwala' and 'Himroz.' The fresh flower yield varied from 629.57 to 965.7 g per plant, while the essential oil content ranged from 0.030-0.045% among the clonal selections. The essential oil profiling via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed significant variations in the essential oil compounds. Acyclic monoterpene alcohols citronellol (20.35-44.75%) and geraniol (15.63-27.76%) were highest, followed by long-chain hydrocarbons, i.e., nonadecane (13.02-28.78%). The clonal selection CSIR-IHBT-RD-04 was unique in terms of the highest citronellol content (44.75%) and citronellol/geraniol (C/G) ratio of 1.93%. This selection has the potential use as a parental line in future genetic improvement programs of damask rose to achieve higher yield and better quality of rose essential oil.

GGE biplot and regression based multi-environment investigations for higher yield and essential oil content in German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.)

Introduction Saussurea costus, an important critically endangered medicinal herb native to the Himalayan region, is commonly used in various ailments, viz. asthma, ulcer, inflammation, and stomach problems. In the international market, the dry roots and essential oil of S. costus has become an important drug. The lack of appropriate fertilizer dose recommendations is one of the limiting factors for its ex-situ conservation and large-scale cultivation, as plant nutrition is vital in determining crop growth and productivity. The study aimed to understand the comparative impact of different levels of fertilizer nutrients on growth, dry root and essential oil yield, and essential oil profile of S. costus. Methods A field experiment was conducted in Himachal Pradesh, India's cold desert region (Lahaul valley), during 2020-21. The experiment comprised three levels of nitrogen (60, 90, and 120 kg ha-1), three levels of phosphorus (20, 40, 60 kg ha-1), and two levels of potassium (20 and 40 kg ha-1) in a factorial randomized block design. Results The fertilizer application had an immense effect on growth attributes, root yield attributes, dry root yield, and essential oil yield over control. The treatment combination N120, P60, and K40 had the largest effect on the plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf length and width, root length and diameter, dry matter per plant, dry root yield, and essential oil yield. However, the results were at par with the treatment comprising N90, P40, and K20. Dry root yield increased by 108.9%, and essential oil yield increased by 210.3% with fertilizer applications over unfertilized plots. The regression curve shows an increasing trend in dry root yield till N90, P40, and K20; after that, it nearly stabilized. The heat map showed that applying fertilizer significantly affected the chemical constituents of S. costus essential oil. Similarly, the plots fertilized with the highest level of NPK recorded the utmost value of available N, P, and K, as compared to unfertilized plots. Discussion The results emphasize that for sustainable cultivation of S. costus, the application of N90, P40, and K20 combinations is the most suitable one. Graphical Abstract
