Type V deep eutectic solvents are a novel class of sustainable solvents. They are prepared by physically mixing solid, non-ionic components and are characterized by strong negative deviations from thermodynamic ideality. This work provides guidelines for the rational design of these solvents and reviews some of their recent applications. Emphasis is given on the choice of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors to achieve the necessary liquid phase non-ideality, namely on the use of pairs of molecules with high polarity asymmetry, and stresses the importance of assessing their solid–liquid phase diagrams. Polymorphism and cocrystal formation are also briefly addressed, together with predictive methodologies that have been developed to estimate their properties. • Type V deep eutectic solvents are versatile green solvents with tremendous design flexibility. • Thermodynamic non-ideality is best attained by pairing asymmetric HBDs with lone HBAs. • Thymol, HFIP, and naphthol are examples of asymmetric HBDs. • TOPO, DBA, and betaine are examples of lone HBAs. • COSMO-RS and group contribution methods are feasible phase diagram predictors. 

Type V Deep Eutectic Solvents: Design and Applications

The building sector, including building operations and materials, was responsible for the emission of ∼11.9 gigatons of global energy-related CO2 in 2020, accounting for 37% of the total CO2 emissions, the largest share among different sectors. Lowering the carbon footprint of buildings requires the development of carbon-storage materials as well as novel designs that could enable multifunctional components to achieve widespread applications. Wood is one of the most abundant biomaterials on Earth and has been used for construction historically. Recent research breakthroughs on advanced engineered wood products epitomize this material's tremendous yet largely untapped potential for addressing global sustainability challenges. In this review, we explore recent developments in chemically modified wood that will produce a new generation of engineered wood products for building applications. Traditionally, engineered wood products have primarily had a structural purpose, but this review broadens the classification to encompass more aspects of building performance. We begin by providing multiscale design principles of wood products from a computational point of view, followed by discussion of the chemical modifications and structural engineering methods used to modify wood in terms of its mechanical, thermal, optical, and energy-related performance. Additionally, we explore life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis tools for guiding future research toward environmentally friendly and economically feasible directions for engineered wood products. Finally, this review highlights the current challenges and perspectives on future directions in this research field. By leveraging these new wood-based technologies and analysis tools for the fabrication of carbon-storage materials, it is possible to design sustainable and carbon-negative buildings, which could have a significant impact on mitigating climate change.

Lignin, the most abundant natural aromatic feedstock, is one of the most renewable resources for many biofuels, chemicals, and smart materials. Recent progress in deep eutectic solvents (DESs), a class of green solvents exhibiting appealing properties, suggests promising pathways for lignin fractionation and further valorization. Despite considerable efforts that have been devoted to their development, the fractionation and valorization of lignin using DESs are still in their nascent stage. This review presents a comprehensive summary of recent progress in lignin fractionation and valorization using DESs. The introduction of emerging type V DESs, and the relationship between Kamlet–Taft solvatochromic parameters and lignin fractionation and solubility are emphasized. Key factors that affect the lignin fractionation yield and lignin structure have been identified. Particularly, recent growth in computation-based studies to determine which DESs are appropriate for lignin biorefinery and the investigation of underlying mechanisms are also highlighted. Furthermore, the properties of DESs-fractionated lignin and its further valorization routes are systematically summarized. Finally, future perspectives on the development of more efficient and sustainable lignin fractionation and valorization are provided. The present work will provide valuable guidance on the fractionation and valorization of lignin by using renewable DESs.

Drought research under climate change is of great scientific significance. For Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC), temperature and rainfall in climate change, which factor has a greater impact on runoff change in alpine mountainous areas? Can the increase of rainfall in the alpine mountainous area completely eliminate the drought driven by temperature rise? This study takes the upper reaches of Heihe River basin (URHRB) as an example, the URHRB's Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is constructed. Based on 58 scenarios and The Budyko Framework, here we show that a)climate change has a greater contribution to runoff than LUCC, effect of increased rainfall greater than temperature rising on runoff in alpine mountainous area; b)the drought of 57.14% of UHRRB’s sub-basins have eased, 42.86% of the sub-basins is more serious, the increase in rainfall can't completely eliminate the drought driven by temperature rise. This study coupling SWAT simulation with Budyko Framework and other methods solves the problem of lack of data in alpine mountainous areas, and more accurately quantifies the impact of climate change, LUCC on runoff changes, realizing theoretical and method innovation. The results of this study provide a scientific paradigm for solving scientific problems in similar regions in China and other countries, and have important promotion value.
