Optimization and validation of a QuEChERS-based method for the simultaneous environmental monitoring of 218 pesticide residues in clay loam soil.

The application of pesticides is a common practice for pest control. Either its excessive use or by performing improper farming practices, the occurrence of residual levels of these compounds in soil has become a global issue due to their negative impacts on environment and human health. This work was aimed to assess the effectiveness of ozonation technique for the remediation of soils polluted with boscalid, chlorantraniliprole, flonicamid and metribuzin residues at field conditions and the impact of its application on microorganism activity of the soil. Trial was conducted in plots located in a greenhouse, exposing polluted soil to different treatments during the winter season. Four different treatments were applied: S (soil covered with polyethylene film), SOD (film covering and deep-ozonation), SOSD (film covering and superficial-deep-ozonation) and C (no treatment, control). Better degradation efficiency was found for SOSD treatment (dual ozone application), where remaining percentages ranged from 13.2 % to 33.1 %. The main transformation products (TPs) were monitored through the remediation experiment, showing residual levels of six intermediates in all treatments. Further, the overall activity of the soil microbial community was evaluated through basal respiration, with SOSD showing the greatest microbial activity. The results suggest that ozonation could be proposed as an alternative technical approach for the remediation of pesticide polluted soils. 

Degradation of four pesticides by ozonation under field conditions and assessment of its influence on soil microbial activity

Soil contamination is a worldwide emergency that requires prompt, economical and eco-compatible solutions. This work explored an innovative approach consisting of sequential adoption of plant-based adsorbents and mycodegradation to remediate a multi-contaminated soil. Wood biochar (BC) and hydrochar (HC) samples, and spent coffee grounds (CG) were used to remove from the soil two well-known endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) and bisphenol A (BPA), and two suspected EDCs, the fungicide boscalid and the herbicide metribuzin, each at a concentration of 1 mg L−1. The adsorbents were spread on a layer of tissue–non-tissue and overlaid to the soil. After 2, 4 and 7 d of exposure to the polluted soil, the adsorbents were removed. The percentages of OP, BPA, boscalid and metribuzin adsorbed in just 2 d onto BC were, respectively, 80, 62, 34 and 50%. whereas they were lower on HC and much lower on CG. At the two successive times, the amounts of EDCs removed increased, following the same trend OP > BPA > metribuzin > boscalid for all materials and all samplings. The materials removed from the soil after 7 d were inoculated with the fungi Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus eryngii, separately, and incubated for 7 and 14 days. After 7 d, the maximum degradation was observed for OP in any material, being averagely 70 and 74% by T. versicolor and P. eryngii, respectively. After 14 d, averagely, and with slight differences among treatments, P. eryngii degraded 83, 75, 68 and 63% of OP, BPA, boscalid and metribuzin, respectively, while T. versicolor was slightly less effective. Plant assays clearly showed a noticeable reduction of soil phytotoxicity after the remediation treatment with the adsorbents, especially BC. The overall results obtained encourage to study in deep this strategy that allows both the remediation of soil and the elimination of pollutants with a very facile and inexpensive procedure.

Use of plant-based sorbents and mycodegradation for the elimination of endocrine disrupting chemicals from soil: A novel facile and low-cost method

Background Determining the environmental behavior and fate of chemical compounds during technological processing of plants is a task of great significance nowadays. However, the current knowledge is still incomplete for unique herbal matrices belonging to minor crops. The research in this article presents, for the first time, the dissipation kinetics and processing behavior of carboxamide boscalid (BOS) and stobilurin pyraclostrobin (PYR) fungicides during glasshouse dill (Anethum graveolens L.) cultivation. Results The half-lives (t1/2 ) of BOS and PYR after application at the recommended and double dosage were in the range: 1.62-2.01 days in plant and 2.08-4.85 days in soil, respectively. The processing behavior in dill was estimated after washing, hot air drying and drying in sunlight without/with pretreatment. Processing factors (PFs) were above 1 after drying (PF = 1.24-1.39 hot air; PF = 1.15-1.28 sunlight) and below this value when the washing step was applied (PF = 0.31-0.42 hot air; PF = 0.21-0.34 sunlight), indicating the highest effectiveness of reduction, up to 73% BOS and 79% PYR. Conclusion BOS/PYR residues at pre-harvest intervals after both doses were below European Union (EU) maximum residue limits (MRLs). The highest effectiveness was noted for drying carried out with the washing step, which has a great influence on the concentration of residues in the final product. The findings can supplement PF databases not set for minor crops and can be used to establish MRLs and determine human exposures more accurately in risk assessment studies. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Dissipation kinetics and processing behavior of boscalid and pyraclostrobin in greenhouse dill plant (Anethum graveolens L.) and soil

<h2>Abstract</h2> To establish meaningful and sustainable policy directives for sustainable pesticide use in agriculture, baseline knowledge of pesticide levels in soils is required. To address this, five pesticides and one metabolite widely used in Irish agriculture and five neonicotinoid compounds pesticides were screened from soils from 25 fields. These sites represented a diversity of soil and land use types. Prothioconazole was detected in 16 of the 18 sites where it had been recently applied, with the highest maximum concentration quantified of 46 μg/kg. However, a week after application only four fields had prothioconazole concentrations above the limit of quantification (LOQ). Fluroxypyr was applied in 11 sites but was not detected above LOQ. Glyphosate and AMPA were not detected. Interestingly, neonicotinoids were detected in 96% of all sampling sites, even though they were not reported as recently applied. Excluding neonicotinoids, 60% of sites were found to contain pesticide residues of compounds that were not previously applied, with boscalid and azoxystrobin detected in 15 of the 25 sites sampled. The total number of pesticides detected in Irish soils were significantly negatively correlated with clay fraction, while average pesticide concentrations were significantly positively correlated with log <i>K</i><sub>ow</sub> values. 17 fields were found to have total pesticide concentrations in excess of 0.5 μg/kg, even when recently applied pesticides were removed from calculations. Theoretical consideration of quantified pesticides determined that azoxystrobin has high leaching risk, while boscalid, which was detected but not applied, has an accumulation risk. This information provides insight into the current level of pesticide contamination in Irish agricultural soil and contributes to the European-level effort to understand potential impacts of pesticide contamination in soil.
