Investigation of engagement characteristics of a multi-disc wet friction clutch

In this paper, a novel design of quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) metamaterials with high-reliability properties is proposed to extend the practical engineering applications as far as possible. The design of the unit cells of the QZS metamaterial is inspired by the natural growth of tree trunks, which have the characteristics of a simple structure and are easy to be processed. The high-reliability properties of QZS metamaterials are realized by introducing metallic-architected materials. Experimental tests are performed to reveal the reliable mechanical response of QZS elements and the ideal low-frequency vibration isolation effect of QZS metamaterials when metallic architected materials are introduced. The proposed QZS metamaterials as well as the high-reliability design paradigm can facilitate the development of QZS metamaterials for low-frequency vibration isolation. 

Design of quasi-zero stiffness metamaterials with high reliability via metallic architected materials

Considering that ordinary rubber materials have problems such as insufficient mechanical properties and poor shock absorption effect, a right-angle viscoelastic damper (RVD) based on 3D printed auxetic metamaterial (3D-PAM) is proposed in this paper. According to the refined finite element simulation, a dynamic energy dissipation study was conducted on the RVD. Firstly, the 3D-PAM was fabricated by selective laser sintering printing technique, and its material properties were demonstrated. Secondly, the 3D-PAM type RVD was simulated by ABAQUS to study the characteristics of dynamic energy dissipation and to investigate the stress distribution and displacement variation of the 3D-PAM layer. The results show that the hysteresis curve shape is smooth and full under all working conditions. The hysteresis loop shows linear characteristics under small displacement amplitude. As displacement amplitude increases, a hardening nonlinear response is observed. The maximum loss factor of the 3D-PAM type RVD reaches 0.64. Under the same thickness and loading conditions, the maximum loss factor has increased by 16.4% and 100.0% respectively compared to Polyurethane type RVD and Fluororubber type RVD. In conclusion, results indicate that the 3D-PAM type RVD designed in this project exhibits superior energy dissipation characteristics. 

The vibration energy dissipation behaviour of 3D-PAM type RVD

Negative stiffness (NS) structures with curved beams easily experience beam fracture in small-scale designs, limiting their repeatability and energy absorption. The induced energy absorption structure (IEAS), which achieves negative stiffness by altering load transfer paths, is designed inspired by the growth and deformation of tree branches. By means of the variation method of geometric parameters, a unique asymmetric buckling deformation mode is realized in IEAS. The NS and energy absorption characteristics in IEAS are analyzed based on load distribution and major principal strain theory. Compression results demonstrate that the asymmetric buckling mode exhibits higher energy absorption and specific energy absorption compared to symmetric linear buckling, effectively improving structural toughness. Through gradient analysis of geometric parameters and comprehensive analysis of induced structure layouts, the asymmetric buckling mode is successfully implemented in multi-layer IEAS. The multi-layer IESA exhibits excellent ability of energy absorption and toughness, making it have potential applications in areas that require small-sized designs with high energy absorption capabilities.
