Associations between Facets and Aspects of Big Five Personality and Affective Disorders:A Systematic Review and Best Evidence Synthesis

The main purpose of this chapter is to search into the concept of mental well-being in Iran. First, the author reviews the philosophical and psychological conceptualizations of mental health in the West, focusing on the distinction between hedonic and eudaimonic aspects of well-being. Second, the author provides a conceptual analysis of the implicit theory of Islam about mental health with reference to Islamic texts. This conceptual analysis reveals that the distinction between hedonic and eudaimonic aspects of well-being is generally applicable to the Islamic cultures, although there are some cultural differences in the content and proprieties. Third, the author reviews the current empirical findings in Iran using western scales of well-being. This chapter proceeds with discussing the strengths and drawbacks of these empirical studies and highlighting a few ways in which these drawbacks can be overcome in the future. Finally, the author argues that although much needs to be done in the years to come, the Iranian experience with western well-being scales has been successful heretofore.

The relationship between personality characteristics, social support and life satisfaction with university students’ academic performance

Background: General health is related not only to physical illness but also to mental and social conditions including personality traits and the quality of life. The main objective of the current study was to investigate the relationship between five main personality factors, quality of life, and mental health in patients suffering from thalassemia. Materials and Methods: The current study was a correlative one. The convenient sampling method was used to select 40 people suffering from thalassemia major and 40 people suffering from thalassemia minor (age:15-18 years old). In order to gather the required data, questionnaires of general health (GHQ), quality of life, and NEO five-factor inventory (NEO-FFI) were used. The acquired data were analyzed using step-wise regression using SPSS (version 20). Results: Multiple regression analysis indicated that personality traits and components of quality of life can predicte variables for the variance and mental health. .For example, 13 percent of the variance for the general health variable was explained based on the linear combination of the two variables of personality and quality of life. Neuroticism explained 26 percent of the variance for the variable of anxiety and sleep disorder and conscientiousness accounted for 36 percent of that variance. Mental health explained 20 percent of the variance for the component of social action and mental health explains 19 percent, social relations explains 23 percent, and environmental health explained 26 percent of the variance for the variable of depression Conclusion: The results showed that there was a relationship between components of quality of life and personality and the components of general health

The Relationship Between Personality Traits,Mental Health, and Quality of Life in People with Thalassemia

Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between domains and facets of the five factor model of personality and happiness, mental health and physical health . Method : In a descriptive study, 359 individuals (177 females and 182 males) were chosen through multi-stage stratified random sampling procedures from the population of undergraduate students from two universities in the city of Tehran (Iran). The subjects completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory; and three individual rating scales (happiness, mental health and physical health). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression analysis. Results : Happiness and physical health were positively related to extraversion and conscientiousness and negatively related to neuroticism. Mental health was positively related to extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness and negatively related to neuroticism. In addition, happiness was positively associated with mental and physical health. Stepwise Regression analysis showed that happiness and physical health were predicted by neuroticism, openness to experience and extraversion. However, only some facets of each factor were significant predictors of the factors. Conclusion : Along with other studies findings, high extraversion and low neuroticism are major predictors of happiness, mental health and physical health.

Domain and Facets of the Five Factor Model of Personality Correlates of Happiness, Mental Health and Physical Health

Objectives : The aim of this descriptive study was to examine the relationships between identity styles of the Berzonsky model and religiosity. Method : 359 students (182 males and 177 females) who were selected using a randomized stratified multi-stage method from among undergraduate students of Shahid Beheshti and Tehran universities, were assessed using Berzonsky Identity Styles Inventory (ISI), Islamic Orientation Questionnaire, and the Duriez Post Critical Belief Scale (PCBS). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression analysis. Results : Based on correlation analysis, most religiousity variables were positively related to informational and normative identity styles and negatively related to diffuse/avoidant identity style. Also, stepwise regression analysis showed that religious belief and practice, was predicted by informational and normative identity styles, inclusion of transcendence was predicted by normative and diffuse/avoidant identity styles (negatively) and symbolic processing was positively predicted by informational identity style. Conclusion : The positive relation of most religiousity factors with informational and normative identity styles, and their negative relationship with diffuse/avoidant identity styles indicates that these factors belong to a common religious
