Data remains one of our most abundant yet under-utilized resources. This article provides a holistic framework that will help companies maximize this resource. It outlines the elements necessary to transform data into knowledge and then into business results. Managers must understand that human elements—strategy, skills, culture—need to be attended to in addition to technology. This article examines the experiences of over 20 companies that were successful in their data-to-knowledge efforts. It identifies the critical success factors that must be present in any data-toknowledge initiative and offers advice for companies seeking to build a robust analytic capability.

Turtle eggs collected immediately after oviposition were incubated in the laboratory at several different constant temperatures and fitness-related hatchling attributes measured at hatching, and in freshwater turtle species at 12 months after hatching. In green sea turtles, incubation temperature was found to influence sex, size, and amount of yolk material converted to hatchling tissue as well as swimming performance during the 24 h frenzy swimming period that occurs within 48 h of hatching. In freshwater turtles, incubation temperature influenced swimming performance, post-hatch survival, and post-hatch grow. These results clearly indicate that incubation temperature can have an important influence on hatchling fitness by influencing post-hatch mortality (sea turtles) and growth rates (freshwater turtles).

As a source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), umbilical cord blood (UCB) has the advantages of speed of availability, tolerance of 1–2 antigen HLA mismatch, and a low incidence of severe GVHD. Thus, UCB represents a highly convenient HSC source that may significantly extend the HSC donor pool. UCB transplantation (UCBT) has become a standard practice in the treatment of pediatric malignancies. Now, UCBT is being investigated in adults using both conventional and non-myeloablative preparative regimens. As graft cell dose is the major factor determining hematopoietic recovery and survival in URD UCBT, methods to increase cell dose such as multiple-unit transplant and ex vivo expansion are being pursued. This review outlines the current status of UCBT with emphasis on current and future innovations.

Analysis of maternal and neonatal factors that influence the nucleated and CD34+ cell yield for cord blood banking.

Umbilical cord blood (CB) is a useful stem cell source for patients without matched family donors. CB banking is expensive, however, because only a small percentage of the cord units stored are used for transplantation. In this study, we determined whether maternal factors, such as race, age, and smoking status have an effect on laboratory parameters of hematopoietic potential, such as viability, cell counts, CD34+ cell counts, and CFU-GM. We studied the effect of neonatal characteristics such as birth order, birth weight, gestational age, and sex of the baby on the same laboratory parameters. Race and maternal age had no effect on these laboratory parameters. In multivariate analysis, babies of longer gestational age had higher cell counts, but lower CD34+ cell counts and CFU-GM. Bigger babies had higher cell counts, more CD34+ cells, and more CFU-GM. Women with fewer previous live births also produced cord units with higher cell counts, CFU-GM, and CD34+ cell counts. Specifically, each 500 g increase in birth weight contributed to a 28% increase in CD34+ cell counts, each week of gestation contributed to a 9% decrease in CD34+cell counts, and each previous birth contributed to a 17% decrease in CD34+ cell counts (all P < 0.05). These data may be used to select the optimal cord blood donors and allow CB banks efficient resource allocation. Bone Marrow Transplantation (2001) 27, 7–14.
