Abstract. Non-parametric analysis of total factor productivity change in yam production in North-Central Nigeria from 1992 to 2016 was carried out with the use of secondary data. The secondary production data of yam for that period were collected from Food and Agriculture Statistical (FAOSTAT) data bank. Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index (MTFPI) based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), was used to empirically analyse the total factor productivity of the yam, while Tobit regression was used to analyse the determinants of total factor productivity in the study area. The results of the MTFPI analysis reveal that yam contributed 1.4% of technical efficiency change to productivity growth over the period studied. The technological contributions to productivity growth regressed at 1.8%. The study revealed the productivity growth of yam to be 0.2%. Tobit regression result showed credit borrowed, government policy (Agricultural Transformation Agenda – ATA), capital, and labour to have significant and positive relationships with the productivity of the crop at either p≤0.05 or p≤0.001 level of probability, which implies that increase in them led to increase in the crop’s productivity. Capital-labour was statistically significant but negatively related to yam productivity at p≤0.01, which implied that utilization of labour in a greater proportion than capital led to reduction or regress in its productivity growth. The study recommends farmers’ training on farm practices and techniques to increase yam productivity. They should be encouraged to accept improved yam varieties from research institutes, properly allocate the production resources and adopt improved technology to achieve productivity growth in the study area.

Non-parametric decomposition of total factor productivity growth in yam production in North-Central Nigeria

The study was carried out to determine the profitability and resource use efficiency of poultry-egg production in Yobe State. A sample of 200 poultry-egg farmers was selected by multistage sampling technique and data were collected by using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis, and Stochastic Frontier Analysis techniques. The study revealed that poultry-egg production enterprise is profitable in the study area. Maximum Likelihood Estimate of coefficients of the stochastic frontier model for poultry-egg production were all positive and the parameters estimates of farm size, veterinary services, feed intake and labour were statistically significant, indicating that they contributed incrementally to the total value of poultry-egg output in the study area. Analysis of inefficiency model shows that factors influencing technical efficiency were years of experience, access to credit, cooperative membership and extension contact. Recommendations include the establishment of feed producer cooperative society, provision of adequate and timely veterinary services, and access to credit, frequent extension contacts and adult education classes for the farmers.

Profitability and Resource Use Efficiency of Poultry Egg Production in Yobe State, Nigeria

This study utilized Data Envelopment Analysis to assess the efficiency of six mutual funds in Tanzania spanning from 2018 to 2022. The analysis explores efficiency changes, technical advancements, scale efficiency, and total factor productivity. The results revealed significant trends of Mutual funds, on average, demonstrate a 3 percent increase in total factor productivity, signifying enhanced output relative to inputs attributed to improved management practices, technology integration, and operational enhancements. Conversely, technical efficiency change experiences by 2.7 percent decline, indicating that certain funds struggle to optimize inputs, potentially due to shifts in management strategies, resource allocation, or market variations. Further differentiation between large and small mutual funds reveals that larger entities exhibit more favorable productivity changes. This disparity is ascribed to economies of scale, improved investment prospects, and reduced transaction costs for larger funds. The study underscores substantial implications for mutual fund managers and the industry. Positive improvements in efficiency change, scale efficiency change, and total factor productivity indicated an overall positive trend in the mutual fund industry. Emphasizing economies of scale can enhance efficiency and overall outcomes, urging regulatory bodies to provide guidance on achieving economies of scale and fostering better practices. This research offers valuable insights into the mutual fund landscape, emphasizing the critical importance of adapting to evolving market dynamics and incorporating technology to maximize efficiency and success.

Malmquist Productivity Change of Mutual Funds in Tanzania

This study examined the non-parametric analysis of production efficiency of poultry eggs farmers in the Delta State Nigeria. Data used for the study were obtained using structured questionnaires administered to 120 randomly selected poultry farmers in four Local Government Areas of the State. Data envelopment analysis and Cobb- Douglas production function were used to analyze the data. Results showed that 30% of the poultry farmers in the study area were operating at frontier and optimum level of production with mean technical efficiency of 1.00. This implies that 70% of the poultry farmers in the study area can still improve on their level of efficiency through better utilization of available resources, given the current state of technology. The results of the Cobb-Douglas analysis of factors affecting the output of poultry farmers showed that stock capacity (number of birds), feed and medication cost positively and significantly affected the output of the poultry egg farmers in the study area. This indicated that a unit increase in these inputs led to increase in the gross output of poultry egg farmers in the study area by 49.12%, 46.99% and 20.74% respectively. The study further showed that most of the poultry farms could reduce total expenditures on the number of birds purchased, feed, labour, medication and capital inputs by 20.43%, 3.20%, 3.53%, 7.10%, and 31.80% respectively without reducing their current level of production. It is recommended that poultry egg farmers in the study area should form cooperative societies so as to enable them have access to productive inputs that will enable them expand. It is further recommended that enhanced research, extension delivery and farm advisory services should be put in place for farmers to learn the best farm practices carried out on the robustly efficient farms. This will go a long way to increase the efficiency level of the poultry farmers in the study area.
