Degradation and mineralization of ibuprofen (IBU) were investigated using Ultraviolet (UV) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in TiO 2 photocatalysis. Samples of ultrapure water (UP) and a secondary treated effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), both spiked with IBU, as well as a highly concentrated IBU (230 mg L −1 ) pharmaceutical industry wastewater (PIWW), were tested in the TiO 2 /UV-LED system. Three operating parameters, namely, pH, catalyst load and number of LEDs were optimized. The process efficiency was evaluated in terms of IBU removal using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Additionally, the mineralization was investigated by determining the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content. The chemical structures of transformation products were proposed based on the data obtained using liquid chromatography with a high resolution mass spectrometer ion trap/time-of-flight (LC-MS-IT-TOF). A possible pathway of IBU degradation was accordingly suggested. Bioassays were performed using the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri to evaluate the potential acute toxicity of original and treated wastewaters. TiO 2 heterogeneous photocatalysis was efficient to remove IBU from UP and from PIWW, and less efficient in treating the wastewater from the municipal WWTP. The acute toxicity decreased by ca. 40% after treatment, regardless of the studied matrix.

With the growth of the world population and the improvement of living standards, the demand for global textiles has been increasing rapidly. Although natural fibers are affected by the development of synthetic fibers, wool still occupies a certain share in the textile industry and is one of the most indispensable materials. However, many postindustrial and post-consumer waste wool textiles will be produced. The conventional treatment method is landfill or incineration, which is not conducive to economic, environmental, and social development. To counter this problem, many measures and methods have been adapted for the reuse of waste resources. This article provides a review on waste wool recycling and summarizes two main directions for reuse. Waste wool can be used for thermal and sound insulation materials, reinforced composite materials, or adsorbent materials to purify contaminated water which rely on fiber properties. Keratin extracted from waste wool can be applied for the production of high-value products such as functional finishing agents, organic fertilizers, regenerated protein films/fibers, or smart wearable electronic devices. Meanwhile, future development trends and the demand of waste wool recycling are also discussed. Continuous research and exploration are still needed for effective management of waste wool resources and to turn them into useful and valuable materials or products.

The progress and prospect for sustainable development of waste wool resources

Diclofenac (DCF) is frequently detected in water bodies (ng/L to g/L) as it is not completely removed by conventional wastewater treatment plants. Adsorption and photocatalysis have been studied as promising methods for treating DCF; however, both processes have limitations. Thus, in this study, the removal efficiency of DCF is evaluated using a magnetite/reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4/RGO) nanocomposite via a coupled adsorption-catalysis process. The Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposite was successfully synthesized using a microwave-assisted solvothermal method and exhibited a bandgap of 2.60 eV. The kinetic data best fitted the Elovich model (R2 = 0.994, χ2 = 0.29), indicating rapid adsorption. The maximum DCF adsorption capacity calculated using the Langmuir model was 80.33 mg/g. An ultraviolet C (UVC) light source and 0.1 g/L of Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposite were the optimum conditions for the removal of DCF (C0 = 30 mM) by a coupled adsorption-photocatalysis process (first-order rate constant (k) = 0.088/min), which was greater than the single adsorption (k = 0.029/min) and pre-adsorption and post-photocatalysis (k = 0.053/min) processes. This indicates that the adsorbed DCF did not hamper the photocatalytic reaction of the Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposite, but rather enhanced the coupled adsorption-photocatalytic reaction. DCF removal efficiency was higher at acidic conditions (pH 4.3–5.0), because high H+ promotes the generation of certain reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increases of electrostatic interaction. The presence of NaCl and CaCl2 (10 mM) did not notably affect the total DCF removal efficiency; however, Ca2+ affected the initial DCF adsorption affinity. Scavenger experiments demonstrated O2∙− and h+ play a key ROS than ·OH to degrade DCF. The acute toxicity of DCF towards Aliivibrio fischeri gradually decreased with increasing treatment time. 

Coupled adsorption-photocatalysis process for the removal of diclofenac using magnetite/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite.

In this work, a series of BiOClxBr1-x (BCB) solid solutions are facilely designed for visible-light-driven photocatalytic ozonation (PCO) degradation of florfenicol (FF) in water environments, which could add to the library of efficient, cost-effective and robust nanocatalysts for water purification. BCB solid solutions in the structure of 2D nanosheets are achieved involving the etching of BiOBr “micro-flowers” with HCl at different concentrations, allowing a removal ratio of FF up to 97.3 % within 1 h, superior to bare BiOBr and bare BiOCl. A strengthened synergistic effect between photocatalysis and ozonation is substantiated, where the separation of photo-induced charge transfer is accelerated, the band gap is tuned and the utilization efficiency of ozone is enhanced. This facilitates the production of reactive oxygen species identified as •OH, •O2–, and 1O2 that will attack the FF molecule for degradation based on three pathways. 

Boosted elimination of florfenicol by BiOClxBr1-x solid solutions via photocatalytic ozonation under visible light.

Diclofenac (DCF) has been widely found in sewage treatment plants and environmental water bodies, and has attracted worldwide attention. In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of DCF was investigated using a laboratory-scale simulated solar experimental device. This study focused on exploring the effects of the actual secondary effluent from sewage treatment plants (SE-A and SE-B) on the photocatalytic degradation of DCF and the changes of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during the photocatalytic degradation process. The results showed when SE-A and SE-B were used as the background water of the DCF solution, they displayed a significant inhibitory effect on the degradation of DCF, and the values of k were 0.039 and 0.0113 min−1, respectively. Among them, DOM played a major inhibitory role in photocatalytic degradation of DCF in sewage. In the photocatalytic process, the biological toxicity of the DCF solution was the least after 30 min of reaction, and then gradually increased. Furthermore, the organic matters in the sewage were greatly degraded after the photocatalytic reaction, including 254 and 365 nm ultraviolet (UV254, UV365) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Moreover, titanium dioxide (TiO2) first catalyzed the degradation of macromolecular organic matters, and then degraded the small molecular organic matters.
