An investigation was carried out to assess the water quality parameters of water supplied by Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).The supplied water quality is at risk to deteriorate during its flow through the delivery system and/or due to the possibility of high elemental concentration in ground water. In SCC, there are 23 pumps available that continually supply water for city dwellers. The parameter analyzed are like pH, turbidity, hardness, chloride, TDS (Total dissolved solid), arsenic, iron, FC (Fecal Coliform) and TC (Total Coliform). All results are compared with the World Health Organization (WHO), Bangladesh Standard (BD) and the Indian Standard Institute (ISI).The investigation discovers that the value of turbidity and iron in the location of Christian Mission designated by S-11 crosses the all three standard. The measurement of TDS and chloride shows that the values are within the safe limit. Analysis of arsenic and FC water quality parameter revealed that there are no arsenic and fecal coliform contamination. The water treatment facilities of SCC have to be enhanced; necessary steps should be taken to reduce the contamination and adequate treatment facility should be promoted.

A Study on Water Quality Parameters of Water Supply in Sylhet City Corporation Area

This study was conducted to measure physiochemical, i.e., pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), Chloride (Cl-), Iron (Fe2+), Sulphate (SO42-) and microbial parameters, like Total Viable Bacteria Count (TVBC), Total Coliform Count (TCC), Fecal Coliform (FC), Salmonella spp. and Vibrio spp. for suitability of drinking water of local restaurants in Noakhali. Total 18 samples were collected from six sampling stations, i.e., Noakhali Science and Technology University Campus (NSTU), Sonapur, Maijdee, Chowrasta, Chowmuhani and Sonaimuri, respectively. The result revealed that pH, EC, TDS, Fe2+, Cl- and SO42- were ranged from 7.19-8.47, 250-6710µs/cm, 130-370mg/l, 0.03-0.15mg/l, 46.79-2602.03mg/l, and 7.01-54.67mg/l, with the mean of 7.61, 2097.78µs/cm, 1077.22mg/l, 0.0566mg/l, 684.03mg/l and 15.40mg/l, respectively. The TVBC, TCC, FC, Salmonella spp. and Vibrio spp. were ranged from 4×104-1.81×105 cfu/100ml, 4×103-1.67×105 cfu/100ml, 0-9.2×104 cfu/100ml, 0-1.6×104 cfu/100ml, respectively but Vibrio spp. were totally absent throughout the study. The correlation between physicochemical and microbial parameters were strongly positive with TDS:EC (r=0.997), EC:Cl- (r=0.930), TDS:Cl- (r=0.929) at 0.05 level of significance and significant negative correlation between pH:EC (r=-0.563), TDS:pH (r= -0.577), SO42-:pH (r=-0.449), respectively but TVBC and TC were positively (r=0.499) correlated. The study concluded that almost all water samples were contaminated by microbial contamination and all the result of physicochemical parameters were not suitable for consumption that might be a negative impact on human health. 

Potable Water Quality Assessment from Local Restaurants: Study from South Central Coastal District of Bangladesh

The effects of different concentrations of iron sulfate on progeny production, life cycle, and lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster were analyzed in this study. Effects of iron accumulation on progeny production and life cycle were analyzed by culturing fruit flies with different doses of iron. Compared to the control group, the result showed a significantly increasing number of the progeny in both F1 and F2 generations when using 1 mg/l iron dose. A significant lengthening of the life cycle was observed from F1 to F3 in case of 5 mg/l and from F1 to F4 for 10 mg/l iron fortified media. Lifespan experiments indicated that the female flies have a slightly longer lifespan in 0.3 mg/l and 1 mg/l group while male flies showed slightly longer lifespan than female in case of 10 mg/l group

Effects of dietary iron on phenotypic characteristics of fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)

Water is the most vital element among the natural resources and is crucial for food production, economic development, and above all the survival of all living organisms including humans. The water quality of the river Kushiara has been assessed through all the seasons of the years 2018 to 2020 by investigating the major water quality parameters. All measurements were done by strictly following accepted standard testing methods. Water Temperature, pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Iron Concentration, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity, and Chloride Concentration in the water samples were found to the ranges from 18 °C to 30 °C, 6.50 to 7.82, 40 µS/cm to 195 µS/cm, 26.0 mg/L to 126.8 mg/L, 0.2 mg/L to 3.0 mg/L, 19.5 mg/L to 62.5 mg/L, 22.0 mg/L to 79.4 mg/L, and 1.77 mg/L to 7.08 mg/L respectively. The content of total iron exceeded the acceptable limits for drinking water in the rainy season. All other water quality parameters studied remained within the acceptable limits throughout all seasons of the years 2018 to 2020. Comparison with available data for some of the parameters in the literature in previous years showed that the water quality of the river Kushiara remained persistent throughout the years from 2010 to 2020.

Physicochemical quality assessment of the Kushiara River Water in Bangladesh

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) of Bangladesh is supplying water to the Sylhet city dwellers through its distribution network. The quality of water is at risk to deteriorate during its flow through the distribution system and also due to probability of high elemental concentrations in groundwater. To identify such probable water contamination problems; water samples from 20 (out of 27) different wards of the city were analyzed in this study. The parameters analyzed were pH, turbidity, total alkalinity as Calcium carbonate CaCO 3 , total hardness, iron, manganese, arsenic, chloride, fluoride, MPN (Most Probable Number), total viable count (TVC), coliform and fecal coliform. The study revealed that all the physico-chemical parameters except alkalinity were in the permissible limit. All the samples were found to have total alkalinity as CaCO 3 value higher than the WHO and Bangladesh Standards limit. But the water from treatment plant was found to have high turbidity and iron concentration. Analysis of microbial water quality parameters revealed that there was no coliform and fecal coliform contamination. But high value of MPN index and total viable count indicates that there were obvious contamination and chances of contamination by non-fecal pathogens. Finally, it is concluded and recommended that the water treatment facilities of SCC have to be improved, further investigation should be done to identify the non-fecal organisms and the cause of high total viable bacteria should be detected and corrected for the betterment of the city dwellers.
