Attention is focused on the special problems of structural shape optimization which are due to a finite element model which must change during the optimization process. These problems include the requirement for sophisticated automated mesh generation techniques and careful choice of design variables. They also include special problems in obtaining sufficiently accurate sensitivity derivatives.

One of the major difficulties in structural shape optimal design is to create a design model by parameterizing a geometric model. Shape design parameterization is more complicated and difficult to handle than sizing design parameterization. First, the optimum shape is highly dependent on the design parameterization selected. An inappropriate design parameterization may result in an impractical design. On the other hand, changing the geometric shape of the design model to reflect successive changes in design parameters is a tedious, complicated, and inefficient process. Manual updates of geometric shape and finite element meshes are quite impractical. In this paper, a shape design parameterization method that is built on the geometric modeler PATRAN is presented. A geometry-based parameterization method for shape design of elastic solids

A shape optimization method is presented for smoothing stress peaks that are caused by notch effects on unloaded edges of holes in plates or shell structures with linear-elastic, homogeneous, isotropic material under external forces. The optimization problem is first formulated as a functional whose integrand contains the difference between the stresses at the hole edge and the optimal stress. This mechanical problem is approximated by a sequence of purely geometric, substitute functionals. The substitute functional is discretized by means of splines and formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem which is solved with a quasi-Newton method. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated on the basis of examples.
