Transparent glass-ceramics consisting of a cubic crystalline phase with crystallites having diameters between 20 and 40 nm in the composition of 15K2O15Nb2O570TeO2 (mol%) have been fabricated. A phase with cubic structure is formed by post-heat-treatment at around 390°C for 1 h and transforms into a stable phase at temperatures above 450°C. The glass-ceramics consisting of a stable crystalline phase are opaque. The transparency of glass-ceramics is attributed to a small particle size (average radius: 10–20 nm) of the cubic crystalline phase. The optical and dielectric properties for the transparent glass-ceramics obtained by heat-treatment at 425°C for 1 h are: refractive index, n = 2.11 ± 0.02; relative permittivity (1 kHz, 300 K), ϵr = 44 ± 1 and third-order non-linear optical susceptibility, χ(3) = 3.3 × 10−13esu. These values are larger than those for the original base glass, i.e. n = 2.02 ± 0.02, ϵr = 28 ± 1 and χ(3) = 0.9 × 10−13esu. Second-harmonic generation is clearly observed in transparent glass-ceramics. These transparent glass-ceramics have a potential as a new type of non-linear optical material.

Dynamics and structure of TeO 2 polymorphs: model treatment of paratellurite and tellurite; Raman scattering evidence for new γ- and δ-phases

Glass formation and structure are investigated in binary tellurite systems containing YO 3/2 , InO 3/2 , LaO 3/2 , ZrO 2 , SnO 2 , HfO 2 , and ThO 2 as second components. No glasses are obtained in two systems, ZrO 2 -TeO 2 and SnO 2 -TeO 2 , because of the precipitation of ZrTe 3 O 8 and SnTe 3 O 8 crystals. Raman spectra and glass properties, such as transition temperature, thermal expansion and density, were measured. Glasses having low LaO 3/2 content have a continuous network structure composed of corner-sharing TeO 4 trigonal bipyramids and TeO 3+1 polyhedra having one non-bridging oxygen atom. Further increase of LaO 3/2 content accelerates a conversion of TeO 4 trigonal bipyramids and TeO 3+1 polyhedra into TeO 3 trigonal pyramids having two or three non-bridging oxygen atoms. In the YO 3/2 -TeO 2 and ThO 2 -TeO 2 systems, the change of glass structure follows the same process as in LaO 3/2 -TeO 2 glasses. In 23InO 3/2 · 77TeO 2 glass, few structural fragments composed of TeO 3 trigonal pyramids are formed. There is a possibility that 5HfO 2 · 95TeO 2 glass contains a small fraction of structural fragments present in HfTe 3 O 8 crystal.

Two series of metastable, cubic face-centered non-stoichiometric anti-glass tellurates of Y, La, and lanthanides have been found: Te-richer phases, containing tetravalent Te only, with compositions between Ln 2 Te 6 O 15 and Ln 4 Te 7 O 20 and lattice constants of 570−549 pm, and Ln-richer phases containing minor amounts of hexavalent Te, with Ln:Te ratios between 3:2 and 11:10, and lattice constants between 574 and 539 pm.
