We investigate graphene superlattices of nitrogen and boron substitutional defects and by using symmetry arguments and electronic structure calculations we show how such superlattices can be used to modify graphene band structure. Specifically, depending on the superlattice symmetry, the structures considered here can either preserve the Dirac cones (D_{6h} superlattices) or open a band gap (D_{3h}). Relevant band parameters (carriers effective masses, group velocities and gaps, when present) are found to depend on the superlattice constant n as 1/n^{p} where p is in the range 1-2, depending on the case considered. Overall, the results presented here show how one can tune the graphene band structure to a great extent by modifying few superlattice parameters.

Band engineering in graphene with superlattices of substitutional defects

Single-walled conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) nanotubes containing alternative phenylene and ethynylene units were described computationally for the first time in this work. The electronic structures and adsorption properties were studied by the density-functional tight-binding method augmented with a van der Waals dispersion term. Our calculations show that the morphology of CMP influences the benzene-adsorption performance significantly. The tubes show smaller binding energies to benzene molecule than the film counterparts, consistent with the observation of low adsorption capacities of tubular materials in our experiments. Enlarging the linker or adding substituents in the node can both reduce the tube's band gap. The introduction of OH or NH2 substituents in the tube node increases the binding strength between the adsorbent and the adsorbate, which is energetically favorable to enhance the adsorption capacity. Our results are expected to provide theoretical insights into the rational design of novel CMP nanotubes with improved adsorption capacities for organics.

Unveiling the Charge Storage Mechanism of a Supercapacitor Constructed by Ortho-quinone-derived Covalent Organic Framework on Electrophoretically Exfoliated Graphene

Over the last twelve years there has been an explosion in the area of reticular chemistry with several classes of carbonaceous or carbon-rich reticular compounds coming into the scene and/or suffering an exponential growth in the number of related studies. Examples are MOFs, COFs, graphene and 2D polymers. π-Conjugated reticular compounds in particular are of great interest due to their optoelectronic properties. In this study we use density functional theory methods with periodic boundary conditions to investigate the stacking arrangements of bulk 2D polymer multilayer porous graphyne A, the related carbon allotrope multilayer graphyne B, and the analog bulk 2D polymer C in which the triple bonds of A are substituted by double bonds. The results show that for the three materials the eclipsed stacking arrangements are considerably less stable than staggered and slipped arrangements, with the more stable structures being slipped, staggered and off-centered-staggered arrangements for A, B and C, respectively. To shed light on the π–π interactions responsible for the geometry and relative energies of the different stacking modes we analyze the topology of the electron density using the electron localization function. In addition, simulated patterns for powder X-ray diffraction have been obtained from the optimized systems, which can be used for identification of the bulk 2D reticular compounds in future syntheses.
