Integration of energy, water and environmental systems for a sustainable development

Due to its abundance and also flexibility of cultivation conditions, Chlorella vulgaris microalgae is one of the most ideal options available in order to production of microalgae based biodiesel. Since vulgaris cultivation for fuel production needs economic considerations to be taken, and in first place providing biomass and lipid production costs is important, wide researches have been conducted in this field, and this study aims to spot the best condition for cultivation of this valuable specie by reviewing the whole research conducted. So far, Researchers' efforts show that, the best condition for vulgaris cultivation is mixotrophic regime which is done in a bubble column photobioreactor. Glucose as carbonic source and nitrate as nitrogen source, have the most efficacy among nutrition conditions. It is known the best results obtain in amounts glucose and nitrate of 20 and o.5 g/L respectively. Alkaline medium (pH 9 to 10), non-continuous illumination, 5 to 7 Klux and a 200 mL/min aeration flow rate, indicated the best physical conditions. The most vulgaris biomass amount produced was 3.43 g/L, and the best lipid productivity was measured 66.25 mg/L/day.

Investigation of optimal condition for Chlorella vulgaris microalgae growth

Rise in human population and gradual decline in fossil fuels are increasing the demand for fuels and causing an upsurge in fuel prices and global warming. Concomitantly, consumers have raised their health awareness by taking various supplements, e.g. omega-3 fatty acids, thus calling for advanced nutraceuticals. Both issues are addressed by recent research on microalgae, which can be easily cultivated to produce lipidic biofuels and active drugs. Here, we reviewed the types and biosynthesis of microalgal lipids. We discuss genetic engineering and manipulation of cultivation conditions for enhancing lipid production. We present techniques for lipid extraction, with focus on green techniques. We also discuss the technical and economic challenges in manufacturing microalgae-based biofuels and other bioproducts at the industrial scale. Last, the market potentials and further research directions for future commercialization of microalgae lipids are discussed.

Green technology for the industrial production of biofuels and bioproducts from microalgae: a review

Microalgae are a promising raw material source for the production of lipids. However, the existing technologies of lipid extraction from microalgae would benefit from their improvement. The objective of the present study was to determine optimal conditions for lipid extraction from Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) microalgae biomass.As a result of the conducted research, a method of cell walls disruption has been selected, and types and ratio of polar and non-polar solvents at the extraction stage have been experimentally identified. Also, the influence of extraction process conditions (temperature, type, and amount of extraction solvents added per unit of biomass) on the degree of lipid extraction from C. vulgaris IFR ??-111 microalgae biomass has been determined.The efficiency of microalgae cell walls disruption has been compared for the following disruption methods: microwave radiation, ‘osmotic shock’, ferromagnetic vortex layer treatment, enzyme solution treatment, and antibiotics treatment.A comparative analysis of the extraction solvents used for the extraction of lipids allowed to conclude that the use of a mixture of polar and non-polar extraction solvents almost quadruples the recovery of lipids (3.95 times as high) as compared to the extraction with non-polar solvent only. The optimum ratio of solvents of ethanol - petroleum ether 2:1 (vol.), and the temperature of 47÷50 °C provides the maximum degree of lipid recovery – 28 %.A mathematical model of the lipid extraction process has been developed and optimal conditions for the extraction have been determined.

Experimental research into the conditions of cultivation of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris (IFR ??-111 strain) with high lipid content has been conducted. Nutrient media have been selected, and a concentration of potassium nitrate, which affects the formation of intracellular non-polar lipids, has been determined. Also, the influence of cultivation temperature on the biomass growth has been studied. As a result of research, kinetic coefficients of a mathematical model which describes the biomass growth of microalgae with high content of non-polar lipids were experimentally defined.

Optimization of the Process of Cultivation of Microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris Biomass with High Lipid Content for Biofuel Production

An experimental research into the antibiotic properties of Chlorella vulgaris Beijer IPPAS C-2 microalgae exometabolites under different cultivation conditions was carried out. It has been established that the inhibitory effect of triglycerides, O-dialkyl monoglycerides, fatty acids, O-dialkyl glycerol esters and long-chain alcohols on the microflora of wastewater is highly dependent on the intensity and time of illumination. The antibiotic effect of non-polar substances - exometabolites of microalgae of lipid nature varies depending on the intensity and time of illumination.

Experimental Research Into the Antibiotic Properties of Chlorella Vulgaris Algal Exometabolites

The possibility of integrating systems for wastewater treatment and production of raw materials for renewable sources of energy (lipids) and biodegradable polymers (lactic acid) has been studied. Municipal wastewater from sewage facilities was used as nutrient medium for the cultivation of microalgae strains of C. vulgaris IFR C-111 and C. vulgaris Beijer IPPAS C-2. Experimental research has shown that cultivation of C. vulgaris, strain IFR C-111 generates a biomass of cells with intracellular lipid content of 14 % (mass.). Cultivation of a strain of C. vulgaris Beijer IPPAS C-2 for 9 days allows to accumulate a biomass of cells with intracellular lipid content of 21% (mass.). Both strains succeeded in reducing the concentration of total nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater by ≈50% over 4 days. It is established that the cultural liquid of microalgae can form the basis of the nutrient medium for the cultivation of bacteria Lactobacillus casei B-3241.

The Technology of Pre-purification Treatment of Municipal Wastewater Using Microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris

Работа посвящена исследованию объектов полезных для создания технологий, удовлетворяющих требованиям строящейся экономики замкнутого цикла, основанной на широком использовании возобновляемых ресурсов, максимальной переработке вторичного сырья, имеющей в качестве одной из задач переход от ископаемого топлива к использованию возобновляемых источников энергии. Проведено исследование возможности производства эфиров жирных кислот (ЭЖК) из возобновляемого сырья растительного происхождения микроводоросли Chlorella vulgaris с использованием муниципальных сточных вод. Рассмотрены подходы к созданию технологий производства ЭЖК и перспективные пути совершенствования ключевых стадий таких производств. Показано, что муниципальные сточные воды при определенных условиях (температуре 10-32 °С, освещенности 7-14 клк) могут подвергаться очистке и одновременно служить питательной средой в процессе культивирования биомассы микроводорослей с содержанием липидов 10-18 % от сухого вещества. В зависимости от условий культивирования клетки штамма микроводорослей Chlorella vulgaris IPPAS C-2 снижают концентрацию катионов аммония, фосфат-анионов и общего микробного числа в муниципальных сточных водах на 93 – 95% (масс.), 90 – 97% (масс.) и 86 – 95%, соответственно. Проанализировано влияние технологических условий проведения процесса на скорость роста биомассы и жирнокислотный состав накапливаемых липидов. Экспериментально установлено, что триглицериды, Одиалкилмоноглицериды и жирные кислоты оказывают наибольшее ингибирующее влияние на микрофлору сточных вод. С использованием теории растворимости Ч. Хансена выбрана система полярного и неполярного растворителей, состоящая из этанола и петролейного эфира в соотношении (1:2) об., обеспечивающая эффективное проведение процесса экстракции. Получен выход эфиров жирных кислот КЭЖК =45% при проведении реакции переэтерификации с использованием этанола в соотношении с липидами 6:1 (мол.) при температуре реакции 60 °С в присутствии щелочного катализатора – гидроксида натрия (3% от массы липидов).
