Blackening and odorization of urban rivers: a bio-geochemical process

This work focused on the enzymatic treatment of deinking sludge (DS), a waste stream arising from German deinked pulp mills. Three industrial DS samples were characterised with respect to chemical composition and fibre morphology. In this study, four cellulase enzyme preparations were tested under neutral pH conditions and one cellulase was identified as suitable for DS conditioning with no need of pH adjustment. Additionally, our approach shows that inorganic particles contained in the DS samples do not negatively affect cellulase activity, as illustrated by respectable hydrolysis yields of up to 61%. Enzymatic treatment of DS led to fibre shortening and fibre fines generation with increasing enzyme dose and incubation time. The dewaterability of enzyme-treated DS samples was tested and the results showed that high amounts of fibre fines enhanced filter cake consolidation during dewatering, resulting in higher cake solids. Enzymatic treatment of deinking sludge – effect on fibre and drainage properties

Die Entsorgung von Abfallen und Ruckstanden ist zu einem entscheidenden Problem in der altpapierverarbeitenden Industrie geworden, wobei das Schlammmanagement einen wesentlichen Teil der Kosten fur die Herstellung von Recyclingpapierprodukten darstellt. Daher versuchen die Fabriken, so viel nutzbares Material wie moglich aus ihrem Rohstoff zu gewinnen, um die zu entsorgende Abfallmenge zu minimieren. Viele Werke haben nach alternativen Moglichkeiten gesucht, Ruckstande in Ressourcen umzuwandeln und zu nutzen. Diese Strategie spiegelt sich auch in den zunehmenden Forschungsanstrengungen in diesem Bereich wider. Die vorliegende Arbeit prasentiert zwei wissenschaftliche Ansatze zur Verbesserung der Effizienz der Herstellung von Recyclingpapier durch die Anwendung biotechnologischer Verfahren.
Zunachst wurde die anaerobe Vergarung von Deinkingschlammen (DS) zu Methan untersucht. Dies umfasste die grundliche Charakterisierung der Abfallstrome, um biologisch abbaubare und nicht biologisch abbaubare, aber auch potenziell hemmende Substanzen zu identifizieren und zu quantifizieren. In Vorversuchen wurden gangige Rohstoffe der Papierherstellung (Zell- und Holzstoffe sowie Altpapier) als Benchmark ausgewahlt. Feinstoff-Fraktionen dieser "Modellsubstrate" wurden im Technikumsmasstab erzeugt. Die DS-Proben wurden im Labormasstab erzeugt. Batch-Garversuche wurden mit den Ausgangsfaserstoffen, den Feinstoff-Fraktionen und den DS-Proben durchgefuhrt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie zeigten, dass die ligninhaltigen Proben die niedrigsten Methanertrage lieferten. Offensichtlich war nicht nur der Ligningehalt selbst fur ein geringeres Methanpotenzial verantwortlich. Stattdessen konnen die Eigenschaften des Lignins und die strukturellen und raumlichen Beziehungen zwischen Lignin- und Cellulosefraktionen auch eine bedeutende Rolle im Ausmas des Abbaus, insbesondere der Kohlenhydrate, spielen. Im Gegensatz dazu beeinflusste die Anwesenheit von anorganischen Fullstoffpartikeln die anaerobe Abbaubarkeit nicht. Die Vergarung der DS-Proben lieferte eine breite Palette von Methanertragen, die direkt von der Qualitat und Zusammensetzung des ursprunglichen Altpapiers abhangig waren. Die Ergebnisse zeigten deutlich, dass DS im Gegensatz zu anderen lignocellulosischen Einsatzmaterialien schnell abgebaut werden konnten. Dies ist hochstwahrscheinlich auf die mechanische und chemische Vorbehandlung wahrend des Papierherstellungs- und Recyclingprozesses zuruckzufuhren. Die hohe Abbaurate von DS ermoglicht kurze Verweilzeiten in einer Biogasanlage, ein entscheidender Faktor fur die Auslegung und die Investitionskosten im industriellen Masstab.
Als zweiter Ansatz wurde die enzymatische Behandlung von DS zur Verbesserung der Entwasserung untersucht. Um ein Screening von Enzympraparaten durchfuhren zu konnen, wurde ein Enzymaktivitatstest entwickelt, der den Betriebsbedingungen der Altpapieraufbereitung entspricht. Auf dieser Basis wurde ein geeignetes Cellulase-Produkt fur die Behandlung von DS bei verschiedenen Enzymdosierungen und Inkubationszeiten gefunden. Diese Versuche wurden mit drei verschiedenen industriellen DS-Proben durchgefuhrt, zwei aus der Produktion von Buropapier und eine aus der Produktion von Hygienepapier auf Basis von Altpapier. Es wurde gezeigt, dass durch die enzymatische Behandlung von DS die kurzeren Faserfragmente beim Pressvorgang effizienter in einen Kuchen gepackt werden konnen. Dadurch konnen betrachtlich hohere Endtrockengehalte nach dem Entwassern erhalten werden.
Abschliesend wurden technologische und okonomische Aspekte der vorgestellten biotechnologischen Ansatze diskutiert. Hinsichtlich Methanausbeuten (bezogen auf die organische Trockensubstanz) konnen die untersuchten DS mit anderen gangigen Lignocellulosesubstraten konkurrieren, die fur die Biogasproduktion geeignet sind. DS enthalten jedoch grose Mengen anorganischer Komponenten, die nicht zur Methanproduktion beitragen. Somit ist das spezifische Methanpotenzial von DS (bezogen auf die Frischmasse) viel geringer im Vergleich zu anderen Substraten. Die Moglichkeit einer Trockenfermentation oder die Co-Vergarung von DS musste in weiteren Untersuchungen eruiert werden. Bei der enzymatischen Behandlung von DS sind fur eine okonomische Betrachtung zunachst zuverlassige Informationen uber Enzympreise erforderlich. Daruber hinaus konnen die Retentionszeit und die Enzymdosis weiter optimiert werden. Fur viele Recyclingpapierfabriken sind die vorgestellten Ansatze derzeit moglicherweise nicht wirtschaftlich. Der okologische Wert der Abfallreduzierung steht jedoch auser Frage. Steigende Entsorgungs- und Energiekosten konnten in Zukunft zur Attraktivitat der vorgestellten Ansatze beitragen. 
The disposal of wastes and residues has become a crucial issue in the recycled paper industry with sludge management being a significant part of the costs of producing recycled paper products. Therefore, mills attempt to recover as much usable material from their raw furnish as possible in order to minimize the amount of waste to be disposed. Mills have sought options for turning residues into resources by finding alternative ways of utilization. This strategy is also reflected in the increasing research efforts made in this specific area. This study presents two scientific approaches for improving the efficiency of recycled paper manufacturing through the application of biotechnological processes.
The first approach involved the anaerobic digestion (AD) of deinking sludges (DS). This included the thorough characterization of the waste streams to identify and quantify biodegradable and non-biodegradable, but also potentially inhibitory substances. In preliminary experiments, common raw materials of paper production (chemical and mechanical pulps, recovered paper) were selected as benchmark. Fines fractions of these “model substrates” were generated in pilot scale screening. The DS samples were generated in laboratory scale. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were conducted with the original pulps, fines fractions and DS samples. The results of this study demonstrated that the lignin-containing samples delivered the lowest methane yields. Apparently, it was not only the lignin content itself that was responsible for a lower level of methane potential. Instead, the characteristics of the lignin and the structural and spatial relationships between lignin and cellulose fractions may also play significant roles in the extent of degradation, especially of the carbohydrates. The presence of inorganic filler particles did not negatively affect the anaerobic biodegradability. The batch fermentation of the DS samples delivered a broad range of methane yields, directly depending on the quality and composition of the original paper for recycling (PfR). The results clearly showed that, contrary to other lignocellulosic feedstocks, DS could be rapidly degraded, most likely due to exposure to mechanical and chemical stress during the paper recycling process. This speaks in favor of short retention times of DS, a crucial factor for the design and the investment costs of an industrial-scale biogas plant.
The second approach focused on the enzymatic treatment of DS to improve dewatering. A screening of enzyme preparations was performed by elaborating an enzyme activity test under the conditions of technical DS. On this basis, a suitable cellulase product was selected for the treatment of DS at different enzyme dosages and incubation time. Three different industrial DS samples were selected, two from recycled graphic paper production and one from recycled tissue paper production. The results showed that through the enzymatic treatment of DS the shorter fiber fragments can be packed more efficiently in a cake when the sludge is pressed. As a result, considerably higher cake solids are obtained after dewatering.
Subsequently, technological and economic considerations of the presented biotechnological approaches were discussed. In terms of total methane yields (based on volatile solids), the investigated DS can compete with other common lignocellulosic substrates suitable for biogas production. However, DS contain large amounts of inorganic components not contributing to methane production. Thus, the specific methane potential of DS (based on fresh matter) is much lower compared to other substrates. Further investigations are necessary, e. g. regarding solid-state AD and co-digestion of DS. To evaluate the economic viability of the enzymatic treatment of DS, reliable information about enzyme prices are required. Furthermore, the retention time and the enzyme dose can be further optimized.
For many recycled paper mills, the presented approaches might currently not be economically viable. However, there can be no question regarding the ecological value of waste reduction. Increasing disposal and energy costs might further contribute to the attractiveness of the presented approaches in the future.

Steigerung der Prozesseffizienz in der Altpapieraufbereitung durch biotechnologische Behandlung der Deinkingschlämme

Breaking the gel-like structure of sludge by disrupting the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) with specific enzyme -protease- application was investigated. After 8 hours of incubation, the final cake solid content of sludge increased more than 20% with protease pretreatment.FESEM images taken from protease treated-unconditioned samples revealed the significance of proteins in sludge structure. Protease pre-treatment improved the removal of major sulfur odors. Decrease in total amount of MT, DMS, DMDS, CS 2 and H 2 S production in the headspace was found 32%, 41%, 36%, 34% (5 mg/l protease) and 58% (15 mg/l protease) respectively in the unconditioned samples. Addition of protease led to an increased rate of hydrolysis of the matrix by breaking the peptide bonds maintaining the integrity of sludge floc, resulting to an improvement in both odor removal and dewaterability.
