The Web Service Modeling Language (WSML) is a language for the specification of different aspects of Semantic Web Services. It provides a formal language for the Web Service Modeling Ontology WSMO which is based on well-known logical formalisms, specifying one coherent language framework for the semantic description of Web Services, starting from the intersection of Datalog and the Description Logic ${\mathcal SHIQ}$. This core language is extended in the directions of Description Logics and Logic Programming in a principled manner with strict layering. WSML distinguishes between conceptual and logical modeling in order to support users who are not familiar with formal logic, while not restricting the expressive power of the language for the expert user. IRIs play a central role in WSML as identifiers. Furthermore, WSML defines XML and RDF serializations for inter-operation over the Semantic Web.

Podcasting has become a very popular and successful Internet service in a short time. This success illustrates the interest for participatory broadcasting, in its actual form however, podcasting is only available with fixed infrastructure support to retrieve publicized episodes. We aim at releasing this limitation and present herein our podcasting system architecture together with a prototype implementation based on opportunistic wireless networking that allows us to extend podcasting to ad hoc domains.

SPARQL/Update: A language for updating RDF graphs

There has been lately an increased activity of publishing structured data in RDF due to the activity of the Linked Data community. The presence on the Web of such a huge information cloud, ranging from academic to geographic to gene related information, poses a great challenge when it comes to reconcile heterogeneous schemas adopted by data publishers. For several years, the Semantic Web community has been developing algorithms for aligning data models (ontologies). Nevertheless, exploiting such ontology alignments for achieving data integration is still an under supported research topic. The semantics of ontology alignments, often defined over a logical frameworks, implies a reasoning step over huge amounts of data, that is often hard to implement and rarely scales on Web dimensions. This paper presents an algorithm for achieving RDF data mediation based on SPARQL query rewriting. The approach is based on the encoding of rewriting rules for RDF patterns that constitute part of the structure of a SPARQL query.

The use of RDF to expose semantic data on the Web has seen a dramatic increase over the last few years. Nowadays, RDF datasets are so big and rconnected that, in fact, classical mono-node solutions present significant scalability problems when trying to manage big semantic data. MapReduce, a standard framework for distributed processing of great quantities of data, is earning a place among the distributed solutions facing RDF scalability issues. In this article, we survey the most important works addressing RDF management and querying through diverse MapReduce approaches, with a focus on their main strategies, optimizations and results.

MapReduce-based Solutions for Scalable SPARQL Querying

This document defines a new protocol element, the Internationalized Resource Identifier (IRI), as a complement to the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). An IRI is a sequence of characters from the Universal Character Set (Unicode/ISO 10646). A mapping from IRIs to URIs is defined, which means that IRIs can be used instead of URIs, where appropriate, to identify resources. The approach of defining a new protocol element was chosen instead of extending or changing the definition of URIs. This was done in order to allow a clear distinction and to avoid incompatibilities with existing software. Guidelines are provided for the use and deployment of IRIs in various protocols, formats, and software components that currently deal with URIs.
