A study of the levels in 168Er, initially reported on in 1981, has been concluded. The original neutron capture data have been supplemented with data from a new series of measurements taken with improved statistics, derived from curved-crystal measurements of selected portions of the gamma -ray spectrum as well as from a measurement of gamma -rays in the range 1300 keV<or=Egamma <or=2300 keV using an intrinsic Ge spectrometer. These new data have led to the establishment of an improved gamma -ray line list which, in turn, has led to more definitive multipolarity information from existing conversion electron data. Using these data, employing the Ritt combination principle in conjunction with knowledge of the location of levels in 168Er derived from a series of particle transfer experiments, a comprehensive level scheme was constructed where 128 levels are arranged into 33 rotational bands as well as four isolated bandheads.

Identification of rotational bands at intermediate excitation in 168Er

A measurement is described of gamma-ray spectra emitted after neutron capture ins- andp-wave resonances of53Cr, in the range 2–50 keV. The observed decay scheme concerns 38 excited levels of54Cr, with energies up to 5.6 MeV. New information is obtained on the multiplicity of gamma cascades, on the spin and parity of54Cr levels, and on the spin of neutron resonances of53Cr. PartialE1 andM1 radiative widths are obtained for transition energies from 4.1 to 9.7 MeV. The overall energy behaviour ofE1 reduced widths is in rough agreement with a Lorentzian shape, but the average intensity is higher than expected from photo-neutron data. The measured averageE1 strength is =(8.7±±0.8)·10−15, MeV−5. Fluctuations around this average are non-random, showing the existence of an intermediate structure. ReducedE1 widths are strongly correlated with the reduced neutron widths in the whole energy interval. An indication is found for a correlation between reducedE1 widths and spectroscopic factors of54Cr levels. The measured averageM1 strength =(5.9±0.7)·10−9 MeV−3 appears to be energy-independent as in the single-particle model.

Radiative transitions from neutron capture in53Cr resonances

Primary neutron capture ..gamma.. rays have been studied from 86 neutron resonances in /sup 167/Er in the energy range 5--600 eV. The spins of these resonances were assigned as I = 3 or 4 on the basis of the intensity ratios of suitable pairs of low-energy ..gamma.. rays. The measured intensities of the high-energy primary ..gamma.. rays have been converted to partial radiation widths and further analyzed to obtain average E1 gamma strength. Individual ..gamma.. spectra from I = 3 and 4 resonances have been summed separately after appropriate normalizations. The resulting average radiation widths (and hence the ..gamma..-ray strength function) were in good agreement with the Axel-Brink predictions based on a giant dipole resonance model. These widths were also consistent with the assumption that the ..gamma..-ray strength function is independent of the initial spin. The partial E1 radiation widths were subjected to a distribution analysis, revealing that these widths had a slightly narrower distribution than that predicted by the Porter-Thomas law. The ratio of the average population of a particular low-lying level from I = 4 resonances to its population from I = 3 resonances was found to be in good agreement with a five-step cascade model. The populationmore » of successive spins within a rotational band lay on smooth curves which, for different bands, were nearly parallel. A level scheme for /sup 168/Er has been constructed, and the neutron separation energy for this nucleus was deduced as 7771.6 +- 1.0 keV.« less
