AIM: A multi - centre two years the long prospective open clinical study was conducted in five countries located in four different continents from May 2015 to evaluate the clinical safety and efficacy of Automatic Biofibre hair implant in male and female androgenetic alopecia. BiofibreÂ®is a CE/TGA certified medical grade polyamide fibre suitable for implantation.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 213 patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were assessed pre -operatively by Hamilton scale grading and the percentage of scalp covered by hair. All the patients underwent Biofibre hair implantation by a standardised surgical technique followed by adequate post-operative care. Efficacy of the implant was evaluated by surgeons and patients bimonthly for the first year and trimonthly during the second year. Any adverse effects were recorded during these visits.RESULTS: At the completion of the study period, a total of 194 patients concluded the trial and the results were statistically evaluated. Both Hamilton scale grading and covered area percent improved at the end of the study, and subjective and objective evaluations revealed satisfactory results. Side effects were reported in only 18 cases (9.27%) which were easily controlled by either topical or systemic treatment in 8 to 10 days.CONCLUSION: Overall a successful result was noticed in 97.94% of patients with great psychological satisfaction.

Automatic Artificial Hair Implant: Safety and Efficacy in Androgenetic Alopecia. A Prospective Study with a Highly Biocompatible Fiber.

Synthetic hair implants are considered in alopecia when the patient requests an immediate result with minor surgery and with a poor donor area. However, the procedure has historically been marred by poor quality fiber and performance resulting in serious complications. Nevertheless, companies continue to market the procedure with the claim that previous problems have been sorted out. We report a case of inflammation in synthetic hair implants, in which microbiological studies revealed infection with Staphylococcus lugdunensis and Trichophyton tonsurans. The procedure was performed by a hair stylist. The patient experienced symptoms at the site of the implants. Nevertheless, he had the artificial implants repeated. Despite persistent symptoms of peri-implantitis, medical assistance was not sought. It is the view of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery that artificial hair fiber implants represent a surgical procedure and as such should be confined to experienced and licensed medical doctors in a reputable medical clinic. As with any surgical procedure, complications may occur which should be handled under a physician's care. Usually, problems result from lack of asepsis during the procedure, lack of patient hygiene, excessive quantity and density of implanted fibers in one session, incorrect choice of implant area, and poor aftercare. In cases, where implant-related problems cannot be resolved within 15 days of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment, an extended microbiological work-up is warranted, and it may be necessary to remove the fibers that may harbor microbial biofilms.

Ensuring the safety of hair implant fibers is essential. At the same time, good aesthetic quality and durability should also be considered in order to maintain expected result over the years. The main features required are biocompatibility, resistance to traction, absence of capillarity, resistance to physical-chemical stress, and low tissue trauma, in addition to good aesthetics. Aim The aim of this in vitro study was to compare effect aging on microhardness of nanocomposite compared to conventional resin-based pit and fissure sealants. Materials and methods A total of 50 caries-free and intact permanent mandibular third molars were randomly divided into two groups (n = 25) according to the material used for pit and fissure sealants as follows: group I: flowable nanofilled composite (Polofil NHT flow). Group II: conventional resin-based fissure sealant Eco-S sealant. Each tooth was sectioned mesiodistally into two halves. One half was assigned to the immediate subgroup, and the other half was assigned to the aged subgroup by thermocycling. Vickers microhardness test was utilized to measure the microhardness of the different sealant materials immediately and after aging by thermocycling. Result The result of the study revealed that mean microhardness of nanofilled sealant before and after thermos-cycling was higher than that of conventional resin sealant. Conclusion Microhardness of nanofilled fissure sealant material not affected by aging with better mechanical properties.
