High-level management of allocation in a parallel objects environment

Predefined and automatic approaches to allocation cannot always achieve satisfactory results, due to the very different behaviours in the dynamic need of resources of parallel applications. This paper presents the approach adopted in the Parallel Objects (PO) environment to let users drive object allocation in parallel/distributed architectures. A set of high-level directives permits users to specify the allocation needs of application objects; a dynamic load-balancing tool – part of the environment run-time support – uses the user-level allocation directives to tune its behaviour. This paper presents the PO implementation of an application example in the field of traffic simulation. The goal is to show the ease of use and the flexibility of the allocation directives, together with the effectiveness of the approach in improving the performances of dynamic object-oriented parallel applications.

Parallel object allocation via user-specified directives: A case study in traffic simulation

Emerging computer architectures intend to overcome limitations imposed by the power consumption, thermal issues and physics. Multicore processors and computing platforms where GPUs and CPUs are combined, are turning into attractive computing platforms for developers. These architectures are characterized for breaking the trend in computing. They are single computing entities built on an aggregate of smaller and pseudo independent processing silicon dies. New trends in parallel computing are shifting towards the multicore arena. A new factor arises in such scenario, the concurrence. But concurrence is not parallelism. Parallel applications (and sequential ones, of course) that wish to take advantage of this new environment need to take this into consideration, or being completely rewritten in such a way that parallelism can be expressed by means of concurrence. In this changing scenario, abstractions may help to keep performance. This paper shows how the abstractions employed to model a problem, may play an important role from the performance and scalability perspectives.

From structured to object oriented programming in parallel algorithms for 3D image reconstruction

The paper discusses the key aspects and presents the preliminary version of an object oriented programming environment, designed to support distributed applications in heterogeneous, networked Unix systems. Main characteristics of this environment are: usage of Unix based industry standard software tools and components; definition of a simple, C++ like syntax, to facilitate usability and readability of the distributed code; implementation of a light weight run time support, adopting PVM as the base engine. The paper outlines the rationale behind the design of such a programming environment, and discusses in detail the solution adopted to remotise interacting objects. In particular, a simple solution for allowing parallel execution of remotised objects is presented. Performance evaluations are currently being carried out.

DO-OPEN: a distributed object-oriented programming environment

Parallel Objects is a powerful model for distributed/parallel Object-Oriented programming. Goal of this paper is to present the approach adopted in porting the support of the Parallel Objects environment, originally implemented for a massively parallel architecture, onto the PVM environment, which is nowadays a de-facto standard in the design of distributed applications on heterogeneous networks of computers.
