The Preliminary Check-list of British Marine Algae (Parke, 1953), with three subsequent lists of additions and corrections (Parke, 1956, 1957, 1959), was superseded by the Revised Check-list of British Marine Algae (Parke & Dixon, 1964). Since the publication of the latter, changes, both taxonomic and systematic, have been sufficiently numerous to warrant the present list incorporating additions, corrections and emendations.The authors take full responsibility for all the changes from the 1964 Check-list. The responsibility for the preparation of the lists of species for each Class in the 1964 Check-list was as follows: (1) Cyanophyceae, H. T. Powell; (2) Rhodophyceae, P. S. Dixon; (3) Cryptophyceae, M. Parke; (4) Dinophyceae, D. Ballantine & M. Parke; (5) Haptophyceae, M. Parke; (6) Chrysophyceae, M. Parke; (7) Craspedophyceae, M. Parke; (8) Xanthophyceae, M. Parke; (9) Phaeophyceae, H. Bladder, G. Russell, P. S. Dixon & M. Parke; (10) Prasinophyceae, M. Parke; (11) Chlorophyceae, E. M. Burrows, P. S. Dixon & M. Parke.The sequences of classes is as in the 1964 Check-list and there have been no changes in the geographical limits used therein (the coasts of Britain and Ireland or in adjacent waters, i.e. the sea area bounded by 47° N. and 63° N., 11° E. and 30° W.). Three classes (Bacillariophyceae, Rhaphidophyceae, Euglenophyceae) are still not represented and the authors would be grateful for records of marine species of these in order to facilitate their inclusion at some time in the future.The compilers welcome any comments on the Revised Check-list (1964) or the present list.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are symptomatic of ecosystem imbalance, often caused by the many environmental changes that demonstrate the expanding global human footprint and climate change. HABs are a major issue in marine, brackish, and freshwater systems worldwide. HAB species include representatives from most major algal and cyanobacterial taxonomic groups, but, despite this diversity, many HAB taxa respond to similar broad environmental stimuli (e.g., nutrients, light) and employ similar growth and defense strategies to maximize growth and minimize losses. In inland waters, attention is focused on dense surface HABs caused by planktonic cyanobacteria (cHABs), and the past few decades have seen an apparent increase in cHAB frequency and geographic range. There has also been an apparent rise in blooms of eukaryotic phytoplankton, including invasive marine flagellates, while reports of thick shoreline and benthic mats of chlorophytes, cyanobacteria, and other benthic HABs are likewise increasing. Research has made tremendous advances in our understanding of HAB events, yet they remain poorly understood. This chapter provides an overview of these intriguing and challenging phenomena, which affect ecosystems and human societies. While HABs are as diverse as the water bodies they impact, we focus on some specific examples of known HAB taxa that affect inland waters in North America and highlight some of the important strategies used by these species to enable their excessive growth.

The ultrastructure and taxonomy of the Chrysophyceae and Prymnesiophyceae (Haptophyceae): a survey with some new observations on the ultrastructure of the Chrysophyceae

Coccolith structure, mode of origin and arrangement on the cell surface have been investigated in two marine coccolithophorids, Coccolithus pelagicus (Wall.) Schiller and Cricosphaera carterae (Braarud et Fagerland) Braarud, by means of light microscopy and electron microscopy of whole mounts and sections. The presence of flagellar bases in Coccolithus pelagicus is also demonstrated in spite of the fact that the cells of this phase of the life-history are non-motile. In both organisms the coccoliths are shown to be accompanied by unmineralized scales, details of which are illustrated; in particular, each coccolith is attached to the margin of an unmineralized oval plate which completely covers the central ‘pore’ on the side towards the subtending cell. Scales and coccoliths arise within the cisternae of the single Golgi body in a manner closely resembling the origin of scales in species of Chrysochromulina. It is therefore suggested that the coccoliths of the two taxa investigated can be interpreted as modified (and calcined) scale rims.

Chrysochromulina parva
Lackey (type, and only known freshwater species, of the genus Chrysochromulina) has been detected in the plankton of Windermere and other lakes in the English Lake District. This is the first time that this species has been recognised outside the type locality (Scioto River, U.S.A., Lackey 1939). Observations on its behaviour in life, including seasonal and depth distributions, are recorded with the light microscope. Electron microscopy, mainly of material in culture, has added details of the fine structure. The combined results show (a) that the organism is abundant in several lakes at certain times of the year, though it had escaped detection earlier because of its extreme fragility, (b) that the cells are biflagellate, with a third filiform appendage which is a haptonema as in marine species and not a third flagellum, (c) that delicate plate-scales are sometimes detectable on the cell surface, (d) that the micro-anatomy of the main cell components is comparable to that of several marine species except for minor differences in the Golgi body and in the presence of a contractile vacuole. An emended taxonomic description is provided.
