Wheel suspension units each having fluid spring chambers are arranged in a vehicle suspension apparatus. A roll control quantity determined in accordance with the relationship between a vehicle velocity and a steering angular velocity, i.e., inlet solenoid valves and exhaust solenoid valves, are controlled in accordance with a solenoid ON/OFF time, thereby controlling the roll of a vehicle.

A vehicle having a suspension comprising a double acting ram (13, 14, 17, 18) connecting each wheel (1, 2, 3, 4) independently to the body (5) of the vehicle, each ram (13, 14, 17, 18) having respective first (13a, 14a, 17a, 18a) and second (13b, 14b, 17b, 18b) chambers that vary in volume as the wheels move relative to the vehicle body (5). Each front wheel ram (13, 18) is connected to the diagonally opposite rear wheel ram (14, 17) by a respective pair of conduits (8, 10) and (8a, 10a) arranged so the first chamber (13a, 18a) of one wheel is connected to the second chamber (14b, 17b) of the other wheel. Each first and second chamber and the conduits connected thereto are filled with fluid and independent of external fluid and pressure sources. Diagonal interconnection of the front and rear rams minimizes roll movement in a lateral direction and pitch movement in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.

A suspension control system for automotive vehicles automatically adjusts the damping strength of variable shock absorbers or other dampers in accordance with road surface conditions. The sensor signal reflects vertical displacement of the vehicle body from the road surface. The sensor signal is compared to a corresponding reference level which is variable depending upon a vehicle speed. The results of comparison give an indication of the degree and scale of irregularities in the road surface. The comparison information is sent to a suspension system controller which causes actuation of the shock or other dampers absorbers to a stiffer mode of operation when road surface roughness requiring harder suspension is recognized.

An active suspension apparatus detects a relative displacement (x) between an axle and a vehicle body, discriminates a road surface state in accordance with the relative displacement and a change rate (x) in unit time which is derived from the relative displacement (x), and optimally controls characteristics of damping forces of hydropneumatic suspensions in accordance with a discrimination result (i.e., a road surface state). This discrimination is performed in accordance with a sum (Ax+Bx) of a signal obtained by multiplying the relative displacement (x) with a predetermined coefficient and a signal obtained by multiplying the change rate (x) with another predetermined coefficient. These coefficients are obtained in accordance with riding comfort against vibrations. The characteristics of the damping force of the hydropneumatic suspension are controlled by controlling the opening of throttle valves disposed between hydropneumatic chambers and actuators.

Active suspension apparatus

An active suspension system for use with a mass suspended relative to a movable structure and subject to external forces such as the chassis of off-road vehicles, and in particular the hull of heavy combat vehicles, has a passive hydropneumatic suspension system (PHSS) connected to a servopump and an accumulator, and wherein the servopump transfers fluid energy between the accumulator and the suspension system, in accordance with sensed operating conditions which are inputted to a processor whose output commands the velocity of the servopump to control the pressure and volume relationships of the PHSS and accumulator to improve the ride of said vehicle and to substantially reduce energy requirements when operating off-road.

Active hydropneumatic suspension system

Pneumatic fluid is discharged from or supplied to the pneumatic compartment of a hydropneumatic vehicle suspension depending on the sign of the difference between the vehicle speed and the reciprocal square root of the relative displacement between the suspension elements being positive or negative, so that the stiffness of the suspension is increased and reduced with increasing and decreasing speed of the vehicle. Alternatively, in a vehicle having purely hydraulic suspensions, transverse acceleration due to curves is sensed and used to vary the amount of hydraulic fluid in the suspensions associated with individual wheels so as to vary the attitude of the sprung mass of the vehicle in order to compensate for the transverse inertial forces acting on the passengers. Transient vertical forces acting on the wheels due to unevenness of the driving surface are also used to vary the amount of fluid in the suspension so as to simulate the action of springs.
