Due to the characteristics of optical rotation, selective emission of polarized light, and circular dichroism, circularly polarized luminescent materials have aroused extensive attentions, and they have exhibited wide optoelectronic applications, such as optical data storage, liquid crystal display, and backlights in 3D displays. Here, the research progress of circularly polarized luminescent materials for organic optoelectronic devices is summarized. First, the definition and measurement of the circularly polarized light, such as optical rotatory dispersion, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, are systematically introduced. Subsequently, the design strategies for various kinds of circularly polarized luminescent materials, including luminescent lanthanide and transition‐metal complexes, small organic luminophores, conjugated polymers, supramolecules, and liquid crystals are summarized. These materials exhibit circularly polarized luminescence with different magnitudes of luminescence dissymmetry values (glum). They are further applied in optoelectronic devices with excellent performance, and the influence factors on the glum values of these materials are presented in detail. Finally, the current opportunities and challenges in this rapidly growing research field are discussed systematically. The circularly polarized luminescent materials with large glum and high luminescence efficiency are very promising for applications in organic optoelectronic fields.

Recent Progress on Circularly Polarized Luminescent Materials for Organic Optoelectronic Devices

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are devices that utilize an emissive electroluminescent organic semiconductor (OSC) thin film sandwiched between two electrodes. Employing polymers as the OSC is a highly attractive approach due to their easy solution processibility. This results in low cost, large area device fabrication possibilities using printing techniques. Circularly polarized (CP) light is central to a large range of current and future display and photonic technologies, including highly efficient LCD backlights,1 optical quantum information processing and communication,2, 3 and optical spintronics.4 There is therefore high interest in constructing CP-light-emitting devices. Whilst the use of wide-band reflective polarizers as passive components in polymer LED (PLED) devices is one means to engineer a CP light output, this results in a relatively complex and thick device architecture, requiring an additional liquid-crystal cell.5 The direct generation of CP light from a conventional PLED would be far more favorable in terms of simplicity, compactness, energy efficiency and product cost, and thus there has been significant interest in their development.

Induction of Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence from an Achiral Light-Emitting Polymer via a Chiral Small-Molecule Dopant

Aromatic-imide-based thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) enantiomers, (+)-(S,S)-CAI-Cz and (-)-(R,R)-CAI-Cz, were efficiently synthesized by introducing a chiral 1,2-diaminocyclohexane to the achiral TADF unit. The TADF enantiomers exhibited high PLQYs of up to 98 %, small ΔEST  values of 0.06 eV, as well as obvious temperature-dependent transient PL spectra, thus demonstrating their excellent TADF properties. Moreover, the TADF enantiomers showed mirror-image CD and CPL activities. Notably, the CP-OLEDs with CPEL properties based on the TADF enantiomers not only achieved high EQE values of up to 19.7 and 19.8 %, but also displayed opposite CPEL signals with gEL  values of -1.7×10-3 and 2.3×10-3 , which represents the first CP-OLEDs, based on the enantiomerically pure TADF materials, having both high efficiencies and intense CPEL.

Stable Enantiomers Displaying Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence: Efficient OLEDs with Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence.

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials are currently attracting great interest. While a chiral building is usually necessary in order to obtain CPL materials, here, this study proposes a general approach for fabricating 1D circularly polarized luminescent nanoassemblies from achiral aromatic molecules or aggregation-induced emissive compounds (AIEgens). It is found that a C3 symmetric chiral gelator can individually form hexagonal nanotube structures and encapsulate the guest molecules. When achiral AIEgens are encapsulated into the confined nanotubes via organogelation, the AIEgens will emit circularly polarized luminescence. Further, the direction of the CPL could be controlled by the supramolecular chirality of the nanotube. Remarkably, the approach is universal and various kinds of the AIEgens can be doped to show such property, providing a full-color-tunable circularly polarized luminescence.

Full-Color Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescent Nanoassemblies of Achiral AIEgens in Confined Chiral Nanotubes

Circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) are particularly favorable for the direct generation of CP light, and they demonstrate a promising application in 3D display. However, up to now, such CP devices have suffered from low brightness, insufficient efficiency, and serious efficiency roll-off. In this study, a pair of octahydro-binaphthol (OBN)-based chiral emitting enantiomers, (R/S)-OBN-Cz, are developed by ingeniously merging a chiral source and a luminophore skeleton. These chirality-acceptor-donor (C-A-D)-type and rod-like compounds concurrently generate thermally activated delayed fluorescence with a small ΔEST of 0.037 eV, as well as a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 92% and intense circularly polarized photoluminescence with dissymmetry factors (|gPL |) of ≈2.0 × 10-3 in thin films. The CP-OLEDs based on (R/S)-OBN-Cz enantiomers not only display obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with a |gEL | of ≈2.0 × 10-3 , but also exhibit superior efficiencies with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) up to 32.6% and extremely low efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 30.6% at 5000 cd m-2 , which are the best performances among the reported CP devices to date.
