Background: Black tea is known to be a potent inhibitor of intestinal absorption of non-haem iron at least in healthy subjects. Aims: To investigate this effect in patients with genetic haernochromatosis, and, more importantly, the effect of regular tea drinking on the accumulation of storage iron in these patients over one year. Patients: Investigations were carried out on 18 patients with clinically proven genetic haemochromatosis. For the study of storage iron accumulation, they were separated into a group instructed to drink a particularly tannin rich tea regularly with meals and a control group. Methods: Intestinal iron absorption from a test meal was measured using whole body counting. Body iron stores were evaluated quantitatively by exhaustive phlebotomy, using haemoglobin, saturation of serum iron binding capacity, and serum ferritin for the assessment of body iron status. Results: A significant reduction in iron absorption was observed when the test meal was accompanied by drinks of tea instead of water. In the tea drinking group, the increase in storage iron was reduced by about one third compared with that of the control group. Conclusions: Regular tea drinking with meals reduces the frequency of phlebotomies required in the management of patients with haemochromatosis.

Penelitian ini menggunakan bahan baku dami nangka. Dami nangka merupakan bagian terbesar kedua setelah daging buah yang jumlahnya cukup banyak. Namun pada saat buah matang, dami sering kali dibuang karena rasanya yang tidak manis. Teh memiliki kandungan senyawa polifenol yang cukup tinggi, seperti flavonoid, fenol dan antioksidan. Minuman beralkohol yang digabungkan dengan teh dapat membantu mengurangi efek negatif terhadap kesehatan seperti berkurangnya antioksidan dalam darah, meningkatnya berat badan, dan timbulnya penyakit sirosis hati. Manfaat penambahan gula pada proses fermentasi bertujuan untuk memperoleh kadar alkohol yang lebih tinggi, tetapi bila kadar gula terlalu tinggi aktivitas khamir dapat terhambat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu menentukan pengaruh kadar gula dan jenis teh agar dihasilkan minuman alkohol yang memiliki aktivitas antioksidan tinggi dan menentukan minuman alkohol yang disukai panelis. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan yaitu Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan faktor pertama yaitu penambahan gula 75, 125, dan 175 gram. Faktor kedua yaitu penambahan jenis teh hitam, teh hijau, teh oolong. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan gula dan teh berpengaruh nyata terhadap sifat kimia pada minuman beralkohol dami nangka. Formulasi minuman beralkohol dami nangka yang tinggi antioksidan adalah penambahan gula 75 gram dan teh hijau dengan aktivitas antioksidan paling tinggi yaitu 85.90%.

The effect of green tea extract in some liver functions, glutathione peroxidase and magnesium level in Mus Musculus

The most important cause of death in β-thalassemia major patients is organ dysfunction due to iron deposits. Non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI), labile plasma iron (LPI) and labile iron pool are redox-active forms of iron found in thalassemia. Iron chelation therapy is adopted to counteract the resulting iron overload. Extracts of green tea (GTE) and curcumin exhibit iron-chelating and antioxidant activities in iron-loaded cells and β-thalassemic mice. We have used our GTE-CUR drink to investigate the potential amelioration of iron overload and oxidative stress in transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) patients. The patients were enrolled for a control group without and with GTE-CUR treatments (17.3 and 35.5 mg EGCG equivalent). Along with regular chelation therapy, they were daily administered the drink for 60 d. Blood samples were collected at the beginning of the study and after 30 d and 60 d for biochemical and hematological tests. Interestingly, we found a decrease of blood urea nitrogen levels (P < 0.05), along with a tendency for a decrease of NTBI and LPI, and a delay in increasing lipid-peroxidation product levels in the GTE-CUR groups. The findings suggest that GTE-CUR could increase kidney function and diminish redox-active iron in iron overloaded β-thalassemia patients.

Background An animal model was used to study the health benefits inherent in tea fortified alcoholic beverages fed to laboratory mice. Objectives An investigation of the effects of tea fortified alcoholic beverages 12% alcohol (v/v) on antioxidant capacity and liver dysfunction indicators in white Swiss mice including packed cell volume (PCV), albumin, total protein, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and glutathione (GSH) was carried out. Methods Plain, black, green and purple tea fortified alcohols were developed with varying tea concentrations of 1, 2 and 4 g/250 mL in 12% v/v. Control alcoholic beverages without teas were also developed. A permit (number IRC/13/12) was obtained for the animal research from the National Museums of Kenya, Institute of Primate Research prior to the start of the study. Alcoholic beverages were orally administered every 2 days for 4 weeks at 1 mL per mouse, and thereafter animals were euthanised and liver and blood samples harvested for analyses.
