Reticulate porous ceramics employed in high-temperature processes are characterized for heat and mass transfer. The exact 3D digital geometry of their complex porous structure is obtained by computer tomography and used in direct pore-level simulations to numerically calculate their effective transport properties. Two-point correlation functions and mathematical morphology operations are applied for the geometrical characterization that includes the determination of porosity, specific surface area, representative elementary volume edge size, and mean pore size. Finite volume techniques are applied for conductive/convective heat transfer and flow characterization, which includes the determination of the thermal conductivity, interfacial heat transfer coefficient, permeability, Dupuit–Forchheimer coefficient, residence time, tortuosity, and diffusion tensor. Collision-based Monte Carlo method is applied for the radiative heat transfer characterization, which includes the determination of the extinction coefficient and scattering phase function.

High-resolution X-ray computed tomography is employed to obtain the exact 3D geometrical configuration of porous anisotropic ceria applied in solar-driven thermochemical cycles for splitting H2O and CO2. The tomography data are, in turn, used in direct pore-level numerical simulations for determining the morphological and effective heat/mass transport properties of porous ceria, namely: porosity, specific surface area, pore size distribution, extinction coefficient, thermal conductivity, convective heat transfer coefficient, permeability, Dupuit-Forchheimer coefficient, and tortuosity and residence time distributions. Tailored foam designs for enhanced transport properties are examined by means of adjusting morphologies of artificial ceria samples composed of bimodal distributed overlapping transparent spheres in an opaque medium.

Effective Heat and Mass Transport Properties of Anisotropic Porous Ceria for Solar Thermochemical Fuel Generation

Although octupoles, decapoles, and longitudinal gradient bending magnets (LGB) have been studied for many years, they are not usually included in light source lattices. They can, however, be beneficial in order to realize ultralow emittance and attain sufficient dynamic aperture. We present methods for achieving ultralow emittance and discuss optimization of the nonlinear dynamics with multipoles. We demonstrate how control of amplitude-dependent tune shift makes octupoles a powerful tool for dynamic aperture optimization. Control of higher-order chromaticity by octupoles and decapoles is straightforward; however, since this turns out to be not quite as efficient in high-brightness lattices with low arc dispersion, we apply it to a conventional lattice to demonstrate the potential. This paper also illustrates how high-field LGBs can be used to build a compact, bright hard x-ray source. Finally, we demonstrate in detail the application of octupoles as integral components of the MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring lattice.

Tomography-Based Analysis of Radiative Transfer in Reacting Packed Beds Undergoing a Solid-Gas Thermochemical Transformation

We present the development of a compact narrow-band Solid-State Power Amplifier (SSPA). We foresee a promising application of solid-state amplifiers specifically in accelerators for new generation synchrotron light sources. Such a new technology has reached a competitive price/performance ratio and expected lifetime in comparison with klystron and IOT amplifiers. The increasing number of synchrotron light sources using 500 MHz as base frequency justifies the effort in the development of the proposed amplifier. Two different techniques are also proposed to improve the control and performance of these new distributed amplification systems which we call, respectively, complete distributed system and forced compression.

A compact 500-MHz 4-kW solid-state power amplifier for accelerator applications

The Swiss Light Source (SLS) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) consists of a turn key 100 MeV linac, a novel type of booster synchrotron and a 12-TBA storage ring providing 5 nm-rad natural emittance at 2.4 GeV, The SLS project was approved by Swiss Government in Sept. 1997. By June 1999 the building was finished. Linac and booster commissioning concluded by April, resp. Sept. 2000. First beam in the ring was stored Dec. 15, 2000. By June 2001 storage ring commissioning entered the final phase: The design current of 400 mA was reached, an excellent agreement of lattice functions with design calculations was achieved and first undulator spectra were measured. Commissioning of booster and storage ring included commissioning of the innovative subsystems like the digital BPM system, the digital power supplies, the high stability injection system and the CORBA based beam dynamics software.
