Abstract Ultra-fast single-photon detectors with high current density and operating temperature can benefit space and ground applications, including quantum optical communication systems, lightweight cryogenics for space crafts, and medical use. Here we demonstrate magnesium diboride (MgB 2 ) thin-film superconducting microwires capable of single-photon detection at 1.55 μ m optical wavelength. We used helium ions to alter the properties of MgB 2 , resulting in microwire-based detectors exhibiting single-photon sensitivity across a broad temperature range of up to 20 K, and detection efficiency saturation for 1 μ m wide microwires at 3.7 K. Linearity of detection rate vs incident power was preserved up to at least 100 Mcps. Despite the large active area of up to 400 × 400 μ m 2 , the reset time was found to be as low as ~ 1 ns. Our research provides possibilities for breaking the operating temperature limit and maximum single-pixel count rate, expanding the detector area, and raises inquiries about the fundamental mechanisms of single-photon detection in high-critical-temperature superconductors.

Single-photon detection using large-scale high-temperature MgB2 sensors at 20 K

At the present time, ultrahigh performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors are the key elements in a variety of devices from biological research to quantum communications and computing. Accurate tuning of superconducting material properties is a powerful resource for fabricating single-photon detectors with desired properties. Here, we report on the major theoretical relations between ultrathin niobium nitride (NbN) film properties and superconducting nanowire single-photon detector characteristics, as well as the dependence of ultrathin NbN film properties on reactive magnetron sputtering recipes. Based on this study, we formulate the exact requirements for ultrathin NbN films for ultrahigh performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. Then, we experimentally studied the properties of ultrathin NbN films (morphology, crystalline structure, critical temperature, and sheet resistance) on silicon, sapphire, silicon dioxide, and silicon nitride substrates sputtered with various recipes. We demonstrate ultrathin NbN films (obtained with more than 100 films deposition) with a wide range of critical temperature from 2.5 to 12.1 K and sheet resistance from 285 to 2000 Ω/sq and report a sheet resistance evolution of more than 40% within two years. Finally, we found out that one should use ultrathin NbN films with a specific critical temperature near 9.5 K and a sheet resistance of about 350 Ω/sq for ultrahigh performance state-of-the-art superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors at 1550 nm wavelength. 

Sputtered NbN films for ultrahigh performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are a key building block for photonic quantum technologies, as they provide a means for efficient readout of optical circuits with low timing jitter, dark counts and dead time. In this contribution we give a general overview of the working principle of these devices and look into several engineering aspects. We discuss the influence of the stoichiometry of NbTiN thin-films on detector performance and find that a ratio of 65:35 Nb:Ti results in the highest saturation of SNSPDs fabricated from these films. Furthermore, we study the impact of helium ion irradiation on the efficiency of SNSPDs. We show that with this technique the efficiency of an SNSPD can be improved from below 1% to 42%. Finally, we discuss the impact of embedding the SNSPDs into an optical cavity on the system detection efficiency. By employing a half-cavity under the detector we are able to boost the efficiency from 30% to 50% for a detector with a fill factor of 0.33.

Tailoring Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors for Quantum Technologies

Achieving homogeneous performance metrics between nominally identical pixels is challenging for the operation of arrays of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). Here, we utilize local helium ion irradiation to post-process and tune single-photon detection efficiency, switching current, and critical temperature of individual devices on the same chip. For 12nm thick highly absorptive SNSPDs, which are barely single-photon sensitive prior to irradiation, we observe an increase of the system detection efficiency from $<0.05\,\%$ to $(55.3 \pm 1.1)\,\%$ following irradiation. Moreover, the internal detection efficiency saturates at a temperature of 4.5 K after irradiation with $1800\, \mathrm{ions}\, \mathrm{nm}^{-2}$. For irradiated 10 nm thick detectors we observe a doubling of the switching current (to $20\, \mu\mathrm{A}$) compared to 8 nm SNSPDs of similar detection efficiency, increasing the amplitude of detection voltage pulses. Investigations of the scaling of superconducting thin film properties with irradiation up to a fluence of $2600\, \mathrm{ions}\, \mathrm{nm}^{-2}$ revealed an increase of sheet resistance and a decrease of critical temperature towards high fluences. A physical model accounting for defect generation and sputtering during helium ion irradiation is presented and shows good qualitative agreement with experiments.

Site-Selective Enhancement of Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors via Local Helium Ion Irradiation

Magnomechanical devices, in which magnetic excitations couple to mechanical vibrations, have been discussed as efficient and broadband microwave signal transducers in the classical and quantum limit. We experimentally investigate the magnetoelastic coupling between the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) modes in a metallic Co$_{25}$Fe$_{75}$ thin film, featuring ultra-low magnetic damping as well as sizable magnetostriction, and standing transverse elastic phonon modes in sapphire, silicon and gadolinium gallium garnet by performing broadband FMR spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures. For all these substrate materials, we observe an interaction between the resonant acoustic and magnetic modes, which can be tailored by the propagation direction of the acoustic mode with respect to the crystallographic axes. We identify these phonon modes as transverse shear waves propagating with slightly different velocities with relative magnitudes of $\Delta v/v\simeq10^{-5}$, i.e., all substrates show phononic birefringence. Upon appropriately choosing the phononic mode, the hybrid magnomechanical system enters the Purcell enhanced coupling regime.
