The mechanisms leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) are an important subject of ongoing research for both air quality and climate. Recent laboratory experiments suggest that reactions taking place in the atmospheric liquid phase represent a potentially significant source of SOA mass. Here, we report direct ambient observations of SOA mass formation from processing of biomass-burning emissions in the aqueous phase. Aqueous SOA (aqSOA) formation is observed both in fog water and in wet aerosol. The aqSOA from biomass burning contributes to the “brown” carbon (BrC) budget and exhibits light absorption wavelength dependence close to the upper bound of the values observed in laboratory experiments for fresh and processed biomass-burning emissions. We estimate that the aqSOA from residential wood combustion can account for up to 0.1–0.5 Tg of organic aerosol (OA) per y in Europe, equivalent to 4–20% of the total OA emissions. Our findings highlight the importance of aqSOA from anthropogenic emissions on air quality and climate.

Direct observation of aqueous secondary organic aerosol from biomass-burning emissions.

The reduction in vehicle exhaust emissions achieved in the last two decades is offset by the growth in traffic, as well as by changes in the composition of emitted pollutants. The present investigation illustrates the emissions of eight in-use gasoline and diesel passenger cars using the official European driving cycle and the ARTEMIS real-world driving cycles. Measurements comprised gaseous regulated pollutants (CO, CO_2, NO_x and hydrocarbons), particulate matter and its carbonaceous content (organic and elemental carbon, OC and EC), as well as about 20 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the C_6-C_11 range. It was observed that some of the vehicles do not comply with the corresponding regulations. Significant differences in emissions were registered between driving cycles. Not all regulated pollutants showed a tendency to decrease from Euro 3 to Euro 5. The particulate carbon emission factors were significantly lower under the ARTEMIS Road compared with the ARTEMIS Urban driving cycle with cold start. In general, cold start-up driving conditions produced the highest emission factors. A tendency to the decline of carbonaceous emissions from Euro 3 to Euro 5 diesel vehicles was observed, whilst this trend was not registered for petrol-powered cars. The fraction of total carbon composed of EC was much lower in particles emitted by petrol vehicles (＜ 10%) than by diesel engines (50-95%). However, the EC content in emissions from more modern vehicles equipped with diesel particulate filter (DPF) is almost negligible. Among VOCs, benzene, toluene and xylenes were generally the dominant species. A significant decrease in emissions from Euro 4 to Euro 5 petrol-powered vehicles was observed. The trend in VOC emissions is unclear when diesel engines are considered. During DPF regeneration cycles, pollutant emissions are several times larger than those during normal engine operation.

Emissions from Light-Duty Diesel and Gasoline in-use Vehicles Measured on Chassis Dynamometer Test Cycles

This paper analyzes and compares the environmental impacts of biomass combustion in small appliances such as domestic open fireplaces and stoves, and in two types of centralized combined heat and power plants, feeding district heating networks. The analysis is carried out following a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The expected savings of GHG (greenhouse gases) emissions due to the substitution of fossil fuels with biomass are quantified, as well as emissions of toxic pollutants and substances responsible for acidification and ozone formation. The LCA results show net savings of GHG emissions when using biomass instead of conventional fuels, varying from 0.08 to 1.08 t of CO2 eq. per t of dry biomass in the different scenarios. Avoided GHG emissions thanks to biomass combustion in Lombardy are 1.32 Mt year−1(1.5% of total regional GHG emissions). For the other impact categories, the use of biomass in district heating systems can again cause a consistent reduction of impacts, whereas biomass combustion in residential devices shows higher impacts than fossil fuels with a particular concern for PAH, VOC and particulate matter emissions. For example, in Lombardy, PM10 emissions from domestic devices are about 8100 t year−1, corresponding to almost one third of the total particulate emissions in 2005.

Environmental and traffic-related parameters affecting road dust composition: A multi-technique approach applied to Venice area (Italy)

This study examines the carbonaceous-aerosol characteristics at three contrasting urban environments in Greece (Ioannina, Athens, and Heraklion), on the basis of 12 h sampling during winter (January to February 2013), aiming to explore the inter-site differences in atmospheric composition and carbonaceous-aerosol characteristics and sources. The winter-average organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations in Ioannina were found to be 28.50 and 4.33 µg m−3, respectively, much higher than those in Heraklion (3.86 µg m−3 for OC and 2.29 µg m−3 for EC) and Athens (7.63 µg m−3 for OC and 2.44 µg m−3 for EC). The winter OC/EC ratio in Ioannina (6.53) was found to be almost three times that in Heraklion (2.03), indicating a larger impact of wood combustion, especially during the night, whereas in Heraklion, emissions from biomass burning were found to be less intense. Estimations of primary and secondary organic carbon (POC and SOC) using the EC-tracer method, and specifically its minimum R-squared (MRS) variant, revealed large differences between the sites, with a prevalence of POC (67–80%) in Ioannina and Athens and with a larger SOC fraction (53%) in Heraklion. SOC estimates were also obtained using the 5% and 25% percentiles of the OC/EC data to determine the (OC/EC)pri, leading to results contrasting to the MRS approach in Ioannina (70–74% for SOC). Although the MRS method provides generally more robust results, it may significantly underestimate SOC levels in environments highly burdened by biomass burning, as the fast-oxidized semi-volatile OC associated with combustion sources is classified in POC. Further analysis in Athens revealed that the difference in SOC estimates between the 5% percentile and MRS methods coincided with the semi-volatile oxygenated organic aerosol as quantified by aerosol mass spectrometry. Finally, the OC/Kbb+ ratio was used as tracer for decomposition of the POC into fossil-fuel and biomass-burning components, indicating the prevalence of biomass-burning POC, especially in Ioannina (77%).

Carbonaceous Aerosols in Contrasting Atmospheric Environments in Greek Cities: Evaluation of the EC-tracer Methods for Secondary Organic Carbon Estimation

Within the framework of the Regional Air Quality Plan (PRQA) of the Lombardy Region (Italy) a database named INEMAR (AiR EMission INventory) was developed for the estimation and management of the atmospheric emissions. The INEMAR system considers emissions of different sources (point, area, biogenic, road transport), and organizes all information needed for their estimation: activity indicators, emission factors, other statistical data necessary on spatial and temporal distribution of emissions. As the first Italian experience of an emission inventory source code made by a regional authority, INEMAR is a multi-user database that contains all the data for the emission estimates, the procedures that carry out the algorithms utilized for these estimates and the values of calculated emissions. INEMAR’s strength is the high resolution (municipality level) of all the emission results, great flexibility (database in 3rd normal form), and the client-server framework suitable for provincial inventories. The database is accessible by any PC user connected by the regional ISDN network or by Internet, in order to visualize or modify the data in the archive, or for local processing of the data. Output can be also visualized, in client-server mode, with maps, graphs and tables by means of a specific module of Nebula LTK, a GISoriented package previously developed by the Lombardy Region. The use of INEMAR by other Italian Region (i.e. Piedmont Region) and by the provincial offices of ARPA is ongoing.

This paper illustrates the study carried out by ARPA Lombardia to quantify the variation in daily emissions of the main pollutants and their impacts on air quality in Lombardy during the anti-COVID-19 lockdown between the end of February and the end of May 2020. A methodology for emission estimates was developed over Lombardy for this purpose and later was extended to larger areas: the Po-basin, (LIFE PREPAIR 2020) and the entire Italy (PULVIRUS 2021). In this study, the daily emissions estimates were derived by combining data from air emission inventory of Lombardy and a set of indicators that allowed to update the estimates and describe the temporal and spatial variations of the emission sources. The calculation of emission variation was conducted for all the main pollutants (PM10, NH3, NOx, SO2, NMVOC) and the greenhouse gases; then, the impact on air quality concentrations was simulated by the chemical and transport model FARM, that also allows to track secondary particulate and its variability in time and space on the basis of nonlinear processes and weather conditions. The estimated emission reduction, compared to the expected average value in the absence of anti-COVID-19 measures, daily varies depending on pollutants and is mainly affected by reductions in road traffic emissions and an estimated increase in domestic heating emissions. Simulations confirm strong reductions of NO2 atmospheric average concentrations, slightly variations of PM10 averages and a potential growth of tropospheric ozone.

Emission estimates and air quality simulation on Lombardy during lockdown

Il lavoro presenta le stime delle emissioni in atmosfera di polveri fini, precursori di polveri fini e gas serra in Lombardia provenienti dalle attività di combustione di combustibili e carburanti, come stimate dall’inventario regionale INEMAR per l’anno 2003. I dati dei consumi elaborati nell’inventario derivano da informazioni raccolte sia mediante questionari relativi alle principali sorgenti puntuali della regione, sia consultando le diverse fonti statistiche. Le emissioni in atmosfera sono stimate sia attraverso dati derivanti da misure effettuate presso gli impianti che tramite fattori di emissione proposti in letteratura e utilizzati in ambito EMEP-Corinair e IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). La combustione nel settore del trasporto stradale risulta essere la principale sorgente per numerosi inquinanti, fra cui PM10, NOx, SO2 e CO. L’olio combustibile utilizzato per la produzione di energia è la maggiore fonte di SO2 (56% delle emissioni totali regionali), mentre il gasolio per autotrazione fornisce il principale contributo alle emissioni di NOx (44% del totale). Per le emissioni di polveri (sia PM10 che PM2,5), oltre ai determinanti contributi della combustione del gasolio per autotrazione e della legna in ambito domestico, sono rilevanti anche i processi di usura nel traffico stradale (pneumatici, freni, abrasione dell’asfalto) e le attività relative al settore agro-zootecnico. La benzina è la principale fonte di CO (50%), mentre il metano costituisce una sorgente di grande importanza (45%) per la CO2 e di interesse anche per gli ossidi di azoto (21% del totale regionale). Il lavoro fornisce altresì una valutazione dei fattori di emissione medi dalle attività di combustione in Lombardia a diverse scale di dettaglio.
