Indian medicinal herbs as sources of antioxidants

Botanicals have been used for the treatment of various human diseases throughout history. In addition, botanicals play a role in disease prevention. For example, epidemiologic studies have suggested that a reduced risk of cancer is associated with high consumption of vegetables and fruits. Thus, the cancer chemopreventive potential of naturally occurring phytochemicals is of great interest. In this review, we discuss the cancer chemopreventive activity of cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, Allium vegetables such as garlic and onion, green tea, Citrus fruits, tomatoes, berries, ginger and ginseng, as well as some medicinal plants. In addition, methods for the discovery of active compounds from plant sources are described. Several lead compounds, such as brassinin (from cruciferous vegetables like Chinese cabbage), sulforaphane (from broccoli) and its analog sulforamate, withanolides (from tomatillos), and resveratrol (from grapes and peanuts among other foods), are in preclinical or clinical trials for cancer chemoprevention. Phytochemicals of these types have great potential in the fight against human cancer, and a variety of delivery methods are available as a result of their occurrence in nature.

Polyphenols are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and represent an abundant antioxidant component of the human diet. The review offers a brief description of the chemistry and occurrence in plant food of four important groups of polyphenols: phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbenes, and lignans. Interest in the possible health benefits of polyphenols has increased due to corresponding antioxidant capacity. Considerable evidence is now available showing anticarcinogenic effects of polyphenolic compounds, as well as potential to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The use of botanicals has received a large amount of attention in recent years. Epidemiological studies have shown that a reduced risk of cancer is associated with diets rich in vegetables and fruits, and methods for the discovery and characterization of active compounds from plant sources are available. These results are promising, but additional research on the molecular mechanism of action of polyphenols and their application to human health is required.

Natural Product Polyphenols of Relevance to Human Health

Anti-tumor promoting activity of Asteracantha longifolia against experimental hepatocarcinogenesis in rats.

Background: A pharmacist is a professional who dispenses medicines, counsels patients, and advises health care stakeholders on the rational use of medicines. The study is therefore an attempt to determine the awareness about the pharmacy profession among stakeholders. Material methods: This is an exploratory and descriptive study, designed to describe and explore the Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception (KAP) of the role of a pharmacist in the compounding, dispensing, and labeling of drugs. The statements included in the questionnaire were largely based on the guidelines issued by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). Questionnaires were randomly provided to clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, public, and patients. The questionnaire was then taken back and kept for analysis of response. 514 stakeholders participated in the study. The results are expressed as percentages and frequencies. Results: All stakeholders agreed that during compounding, dispensing, and labeling, pharmacists ensure that drug products should match the prescription and appropriately compounded, packed, and labeled. All stakeholders except nurse (99%) agreed that during compounding, dispensing and labeling pharmacist ensure that drug product is within the expiry date. 34.9% of patients agreed that while dispensing the drug to the patient/attendants, appropriate information on drugs is given by the pharmacist. Conclusion: The present study reveals that clinicians and nurses do not have sufficient confidence on the supportive role of a pharmacist in the health care team for better patient care. The pharmacist also needs to work proactively and through his knowledge, expertise and skills generate confidence amongst the patient and health workers that he can perform his expanded role effectively and thus promote patient health
