It is important to be able to compare and evaluate different solutions early in development. This paper proposes a method for structuring historical data into a data model that can support the evaluation of new design concepts. The data is contextualized by linking it to a hierarchical decomposition of existing products. Two case studies were conducted to evaluate the value of using historical data when evaluating new concepts. The cases confirm that the proposed method is useful for evaluation of new concepts.

Structuring and contextualizing historical data for decision making in early development

Due to rising cost pressure, resulting from tight target costs in today’s products, target costing constantly grew in importance since its introduction in Europe by the end of the 1980s. As target costing provides a tool kit for the planning and control of product costs different characteristics of the approach developed over the years with diverse methods being applied in the course of the target costing process. The authors of this contribution enrich classic target costing with a costing method developed for the cost estimation of individualized products and a multiple-domain approach considering numerical aspects. The result is an approach for the target costing of functionality improvements and/or extensions of structurally complex mechatronic products. Among others it offers special potentials regarding the deduction of cost reducing actions in consideration of different aspects such as functionality, component and process structure.

Change propagation is a central challenge in the design of mechatronic products, therefore its prediction and management in design and manufacturing process is of major importance. One of the key issues of change management is the estimation of the cost of probable changes before those changes are actually implemented. The estimation of the cost of changes and the change propagation management based on the interrelationships between the elements of a product and its complexity, until now, have not received adequate attention. In this paper, a model-based method is proposed for managing the change propagation with the least cost. In the proposed approach, first, with the help of the fuzzy theory, the changes cost of each component is estimated on the basis of financial, time and structural criteria and then by using the obtained results, the change propagation management is implemented in a hierarchical structure, based on the proposed algorithm. The findings of this method help the engineers and designers to route the best change propagation path from the cost standpoint. They also provide the possibility of identifying a product's affected components, and modifying the design of the product, if necessary. In this paper, as a practical case, the change propagation management in the design and development of a smart gas meter will be investigated.

Management of change propagation in mechatronic product design based on minimum cost of changes

Maintenance costs are becoming increasingly important to running a profitable business. The foundation of lower costs is an effective maintenance process. Often the maintenance process is similar to sequential engineering, which is often considered inefficient. This paper looks into how sequential inefficiency was solved through concurrent engineering and how to apply this to the maintenance process. Four initiatives are derived and applied in a case study. Implementing the initiatives is shown to give a potential 12% cost reduction indicating a need for a more concurrent maintenance process.

Multidisciplinary and holistic integration in today’s heterogeneous PLM environments is crucial in all development phases. It is seen as the key factor for multidisciplinary product development within a cross domain enterprise and a complex supply chain network. This paper describes and discusses a new approach how to integrate different development disciplines, lifecycle stages and IT systems as well as associated information, data and processes along the product creation process. A concept for a generic PLM integration platform is developed that contains fundamental components all for complex product development. These components include powerful solutions for requirement, program, process and product structure handling. The interaction of these solutions, especially the interdependencies of processes and shared data is in the foreground of this paper. Business processes are composed by the capabilities of the platform services and respectively the platform processing logic is controlled by the modeled processes. Research results of developed server and client architecture, functionalities and semantic integration aspects that are out of scope of today’s solutions are explained. The data model and core concepts for the integration platform are shown with an outlook for the extension of heterogeneous application integration up to the design of knowledge structures through the extended enterprise.

Function orientation and process cost management allows a transparent and complete estimation of costs in the early phases of product development based on developer’s experience. The present approach utilises the experience of developers and shows the relationship between the functions, components and processes of a product with specific requirements. PDM/PLM-systems build the backbone for data based engineering and could be expanded with cost management features. The next step is to integrate the described model in PDM/PLM systems for cost estimation on the basis of functions and requirements in early stages of product development.
